'Ozark meets Outer Banks': The Waterfront is Netflix's new crime drama series based on true events

Cosmopolitan6 hours ago

Get ready for peak family drama, as Netflix's The Waterfront is washing up on shore this Thursday (19th June).
Starring Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Melissa Benoist, and Jake Weary, the new drama centres around the fictional Buckley family who are trying to maintain control of their North Carolina fishing empire.
Inspired by true events and written and executively produced by Dawson Creek's Kevin Williamson, The Waterfront explores the family dynamics and the lengths people will go to when their legacy is on the line.
"This is about a working man who's trying to make a go of it for his family. They've pulled themselves up from nothing and they've built this mini fishing empire in their small little town," creator Williamson told Tudum. "Now it's being taken away from them bit by bit. They'll do anything to hold onto it, because it represents their family."
While yet to drop on the streaming site, the show has already drawn comparison to some of our fave shows.
"Sounds like Ozark meets Outer Banks definitely keeping an eye on this one,' one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
"So Bloodline, Ozark, and Yellowstone all in one," another said.
Read on for everything you need to know about the series, including how many episodes there are and who's in the cast.

Facing her own demons, Buckley daughter Bree (Melissa Benoist) - an addict in recovery who's lost custody of her son Diller (Brady Hepner) - finds herself entangled in a complicated relationship that could threaten the family's future forever."

Meghan Markle says she ‘would ask people to tell the truth' in new podcast episode

(NewsNation) — Meghan has revealed how she would rewrite her public narrative if given the chance on the latest episode of Emma Grede's podcast. The 43-year-old appeared in Tuesday's episode of 'Aspire with Emma Grede.' In the 90-minute episode, Grede asked Meghan about the public's perception of her and what she would change if she had the chance. 'I would ask people to tell the truth,' Meghan revealed. 'A lie can't live forever. Eight years is a long time, but it's not forever.' Meghan was in the spotlight before she started dating Prince Harry in 2016 as one of the lead actresses on USA Network's Suits. Markle married Harry in 2018 and performed her royal duties until the couple stepped back in 2020 and moved to the United States. Since they stepped back, both Harry and Meghan have talked about the mistreatment they received while doing their royal duties and how the palace didn't protect them. In 2021, the couple shared their story in a CBS interview. They also revealed a lot more in their 2022 docuseries 'Harry & Meghan' on Netflix. Meghan also spoke with Grede about a video she recently posted on Instagram that has gone viral. The 'baby mama dance' video was a throwback that she posted for her daughter, Princess Lilibet's, birthday. Grede told Meghan that she did a 'little secret cheer' when she saw the video that Meghan had filmed in the delivery room before Lilibet was born. Meghan explained that the clip 'was four years ago.' She also told Grede, 'So it's also a really great reminder that with all the noise or whatever people do, there's still a whole life — a real, authentic, fun life — that's happening behind the scenes.' She also said, 'I'm just grateful that now, being back on social as well, I have a place where I can share it on my own terms.' Meghan rejoined Instagram back in January after years of being off social media completely. 'I'm just grateful that now, being back on social as well, I have a place where I can share it on my own terms,' she added, referring to her personal social media handle. On the podcast, Meghan said she and Harry have been working with Netflix for five years. Netflix also fully produced Meghan's 'As Ever' product line. Her show, 'With Love, Meghan,' had dropped off the streaming service's top ten list in less than a week. Netflix also fully produced Meghan's 'As Ever' product line. NewsNation's Paula Froelich reported that Meghan's Netflix show will still be given a third season, regardless of viewership, because the streaming giant is invested in making her products and show a success. Froelich heard that many people are 'done' with the Sussex family at Netflix, but the third season will be used to see if commerce and entertainment can be combined for profit.

All hell is about to break loose in new trailer for The Sandman season 2

Were it not for Neil Gaiman getting caught up in a sexual misconduct scandal, Netflix's live-action adaptation of The Sandman comics could have run for much longer given how much source material there is to be pulled from. But you can see in the new trailer for the show's second and final season that the streamer is going to try to fit in as many of Dream's remaining stories as it possibly can. Though the dead aren't meant to be able to escape hell, there is nothing Dream (Tom Sturridge) won't do to free his beloved Nada (Deborah Oyelade) from eternal damnation in The Sandman 's new trailer. Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie) would like nothing more than to make good on their promise to one day murder Dream — an action that would plunge the mortal and magical realms into chaos. But with so much on the line, it seems like all of Dreams's Endless siblings — Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Destiny (Adrian Lester), Destruction (Barry Sloane), Despair (Donna Preston), Desire (Mason Alexander Park), and Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles) — are going to be willing to help him do the impossible. As Gizmodo notes, the trailer's shots make it clear that the new season is going to tackle a number of classic The Sandman comics stories including 'Tales in the Sand,' 'A Midsummer Night's Dream,' and 'The Song of Orpheus' over the course of its 12 episodes. That's probably going to make the season feel pretty dense, but Netflix has (smartly, to be honest) decided to release the episodes in a few batches. Volume 1 debuts with six episodes on July 3rd, Volume 2 drops July 24th, and The Sandman 's final episode premieres on July 31st.

Jason Isaacs reveals the 'very low price' the 'White Lotus' cast was paid per episode

As far as Jason Isaacs is concerned, the price of a stay at "The White Lotus" was relatively cheap. In a wide-ranging interview with Vulture, "The White Lotus" season three star confirmed a previous report that the entire cast is paid the same amount — $40,000 an episode. "That's absolutely true," Isaacs, who played Timothy Ratliff in the Thailand-set season, told Vulture. "Generally actors don't talk about pay in public because it's ridiculously disproportionate to what we do — putting on makeup and funny voices — and just upsets the public. But compared to what people normally get paid for big television shows, that's a very low price." Isaacs, a veteran actor with credits ranging from "Black Hawk Down" to "Harry Potter," said he's not upset that he was paid the same amount as less established talent on the show because, as he put it, "I never work for the money." "I mean, I've done all right," he continued. "People will think I have huge stockpiles of money but sadly, what I've done rather immaturely is expand my outgoings to match my incomings and pretty much spent everything I've earned over the years." In an April interview with The Hollywood Reporter, "The White Lotus" producer David Bernad revealed the show's ethos regarding casting: "They get paid the same, and we do alphabetical billing, so you're getting people who want to do the project for the right reasons." Bernad added that the salary is "not negotiable." In the decades since the cast of "Friends" famously negotiated to each be paid $1 million per episode at the height of the show's success in 2002, the salaries of cast members on popular TV series have ballooned. The cast of Netflix's "Stranger Things" will reportedly make between $6 million and $9 million for the show's upcoming fifth season; main stars of "Game of Thrones" were making six figures per episode by the end of its run on HBO, the same network as "The White Lotus." However, none of that seems to bother Isaacs. "The fact is, we would have paid to be in it," he told Vulture. "We probably would have given a body part."
