These Are The Merit Beauty Products Actually Worth Buying

Buzz Feed06-05-2025
The abundance of startup beauty brands can prompt eye rolls among even the most diehard makeup and skincare devotees. The market has been flooded with seemingly near-identical emerging brands, making it hard to know what's worth the investment and which are just really good at social media marketing. I've long been skeptical of many of these newcomers, and admit to even feeling overwhelmed by the range of choices that are available.
I am, however, always looking for simple makeup solutions that help to keep my routine pared down without sacrificing on quality. So when I first heard about Merit Beauty, my interest was instantly piqued. I was further intrigued when I found out that the brand is helmed by Katherine Power, who previously founded the skin care line Versed, the wine startup Avaline and Who What Wear, a fashion and lifestyle website and clothing brand. She's highly regarded as a person with trustworthy judgment in the style and beauty realm and has impeccable taste. She consistently works with people who are at the top of their field, like celeb esthetician Biba de Sousa, further bolstering the brand's credibility.
Merit is branded as a minimalist's beauty line, providing shoppers with everything they need and nothing they don't. It started out with only 10 products in its lineup — presumably everything you need for a gorgeous, glowing face in just five minutes — but has now expanded to include more skin care and makeup offerings.
After trying out pretty much all of Merit's products, I can officially say that I'm hooked. I use them daily and love how quickly and easily they give my skin a natural, flawless glow. The line gives you an effortlessly put-together appearance without feeling caked on, overly formal or greasy. Best of all, the reasonable price point makes it easy to stock up on my favorites, like the lip tint or cheek balm.
All of the products are formulated to be skin-forward, and are full of plant-based ingredients like antioxidants, squalane and vitamin B5. I was especially excited to try them out because they've also been designed to be safe for acne-prone, sensitive and reactive skin like mine. So not only are you getting lovely coverage from the makeup itself, but you're nourishing the overall health of your skin as well. All of their products are vegan, cruelty-free and Leaping Bunny-certified as well as EU compliant and designated Clean at Sephora. Merit says it is also committed to eliminating as much virgin plastic as possible from its lineup of products and uses shipment packaging that is recyclable, reusable or biodegradable.
As a sweet touch, every first order ships with a chic corduroy makeup bag. I love to use mine as a handbag, and my partner is constantly swiping it for herself.
Below, I've rounded out my eight must-have products from Merit's lineup. Buy them individually or save by bundling Merit's bestselling products and getting everything you need in one go. You'll be surprised at how much easier and quicker they'll make your morning routine.
1. Merit Beauty Solo Shadow
Merit
When I first saw that Merit had debuted a new line of eyeshadows, I could not have been more excited — first by the gorgeous color options and then by the texture and finish. You can get them in eight colors, four of which are classic neutrals and four of which are fun statement hues. They have a unique cream-to-powder formula that glides on easily and blends beautifully but then dries down to a soft, powdery matte finish. I currently have three in my rotation and would happily add more.
2. Merit Beauty Great Skin Duo
Get that post-facial glow every day with this skin-loving duo from Merit. The Great Skin Duo includes a serum and a moisturizer that work in tandem to quench even the thirstiest skin, leaving it glowing, supple and smooth. The serum has a super-light formulation that won't pill under makeup and keeps skin looking fresh and hydrated all day long, while the moisturizer can help support skin's moisture barrier, elasticity and tone. It's an easy way for her to pamper yourself daily, and who doesn't want that?
3. Merit Beauty Retrospect L'Extrait de Parfum
Merit Beauty
If you're in the market for a new fragrance this spring and summer, then Merit has you covered. Its new perfume is as elegant and fresh as you would imagine from such a sophisticated brand. It features a lush, soft and clean scent with floral, musk, vanilla and moss notes that will leave you smelling like yourself but better. Instead of overpowering, it'll complement your skin and evolve as the day goes on.
4.
Merit Beauty
Merit's foundation stick is, in my opinion, the crown jewel of the collection. It glides on effortlessly, has a creamy consistency and gives you just the right amount of buildable coverage. It's incredibly versatile, too. Some days I use it just as an under-eye concealer or to spot correct around my nose or to hide pimples, and when I want fuller coverage I use it as an all-over foundation. It leaves skin looking glowy, but not oily, has a dewy finish and, unlike many hydrating foundations, it actually lasts all day long. It's available in 30 different shades, is safe for acne-prone skin like mine, conditions and moisturizes the skin and can even be used as a contour — just go three shades darker than your usual hue if that's how you plan to use it.
5.
Merit Beauty
After years of using Glossier's brow pomade, I've switched allegiances for good. Merit's brow pomade comes in four hues that add color and structure to even the wimpiest of brows (like mine). They make brows fluffy and full, but never stiff or dry. The tube lasts longer than most other brow pomades I've tried and gives brows a very natural, yet robust, appearance. I never walk out the door without swiping it on first.
6. Merit Beauty Flush Balm
Merit Beauty
I'm a big blush person, so my standards are very high in general, but particularly for tint or balm-type formulas. I have extremely acne-prone skin, so creamy formulas can be quite dicey. But I'm pleased to report that Merit's blush balm is a great option for anyone looking for that natural, lit-from-within glowy vibe that won't clog pores. It is buildable, so you can keep it sheer or layer it on depending on your whim, and it hydrates and conditions the skin and looks good doing it. It has a lovely texture that isn't sticky or smudgy and lasts all day long. It's easy to blend with fingers or a brush and is available in 12 sweet shades. I use it nearly daily.
7. Merit Beauty Shade Slick tinted lip oil
Merit Beauty
Available in 11 different sheer shades, this tinted lip oil is perfect for anyone who wants a lighter texture than a traditional lipstick. It gives you the same high-shine finish as a gloss but never feels sticky. It adds a hint of color to enhance your overall complexion, is buildable if you want a bit more drama and feels lightweight. It's made with hydrating ingredients that nourish and strengthen the moisture barrier of your lips, so it's good for you too. I love the Sangria and Pink Beet shades, but my partner lives in the Cara Cara and Au Naturel hues. It's almost impossible to pick just one.
8. Merit Beauty Clean Lash lengthening mascara
Merit Beauty
If you love a natural lash, this is about to become your go-to mascara. Despite a lifetime of being obsessed with thick — dare we say clumpy — mascaras, I'm absolutely besotted with Merit's lovely version. It's the ideal everyday lash-enhancer: clean, natural and slick. It looks like your own lashes, but infinitely better. The brush gives a really nice fluttery, feathery effect and the formula itself gives lashes a really shiny, wet look that won't smudge or look dried out even as the day wears on. Best of all, it's easy to remove at the end of the day, so you don't have to worry about going to town on your lashes when cleansing your face.

I ditched my $2,000 mattress for one costing $649 and I hate to say I'm sleeping better

It's a common belief that the more you spend on a mattress, the closer you get to a perfect night's sleep. And previously, if someone had told me a mattress cost $2,000 I would have assumed it would be the ultimate sleeping experience; akin to snoozing on a cloud. However, since becoming the Sleep Features Editor for Tom's Guide, I've come to realize that many of this year's best mattresses range sit at around the $2,000 mark for a queen size (although there are fantastic budget mattresses from just $359). After sleeping on the Birch Luxe Natural for months, I fell in love with its robust support, organic materials and luxury feel. I was reluctant to get rid of it, but the opportunity came along to test an affordable, renowned mattress; the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid. Skip to a few weeks down the line and I'm sleeping better already, but why? Before trying the DreamCloud, I was sleeping on the Birch Luxe Natural. It's certainly up there with the best luxury mattresses of the year, with an eight-layer design that features the most high-quality, sustainable materials like GOTS-certified wool, GOLS-certified latex and organic cotton, as well as a layer of coils. There's no doubt that this is a luxury mattress, although it doesn't have that typical luxury 'cloud-like' feel. It's actually quite firm. Birch rates it as a medium feel, but during the testing period for our Birch Luxe Natural mattress review, the testing panel and I agreed it felt like a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. As a side sleeper, I was worried this might feel a little too hard for me. However, I enjoyed feeling elevated and lifted up by the mattress, rather than sinking into it. The wool layers in the pillow top also helped cushion the body slightly, but I wouldn't say it contoured to my body. Ultimately, I slept well and there was no doubt that my spine was aligned throughout the night. To me, it couldn't have been better and certainly deserved a spot in our round up of the best organic mattresses this year. That was until the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid entered my mind. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Birch Luxe Natural mattress: twin was $1,624 now $1,185.52 at Birch with code TOMS27The Birch Luxe Natural has an MSRP of $2,624 for a queen. However, regular mattress sales throughout the year discount it by around 20-25%, the latter discount bringing the price down to $1,968. But in advance of Labor Day, you can use the code TOMS27 to get 27% off all Birch mattresses, lowering the cost to $1,915.52. You'll also get a free set of 2 Eco-Rest Pillows, a 100-night sleep trial, a limited lifetime warranty and free shipping. The DreamCloud Classic Hybrid is a hybrid mattress that is made up of five layers, including memory foam and innerspring coils. While you won't find the more luxurious natural materials the Birch boasts, you will find therapeutic memory foam for enhanced pressure relief and responsive foam to keep the spine aligned. I wasn't expecting to be impressed by this mattress. It does have a great reputation, but I've slept on some of the most luxurious mattresses out there. However, when I first laid down on it, I was surprised at how cushioning the bed was. I was so used to the more firm feel of the Birch that I didn't realize how much I missed a little extra softness and give, especially around my pressure points like the shoulders, hips and knees. I personally don't enjoy the feeling of sinking deep into memory foam (even the best memory foam mattresses can make me feel claustrophobic), and as a combination sleeper, I like to be able to move around easily on the bed. The DreamCloud felt like the perfect balance between a memory foam and a spring mattress. I almost felt weightless, sinking in just enough to feel like I was sleeping on a cloud and keep my spine perfectly aligned. Ultimately, this all helped me get comfortable quickly and stay comfortable throughout the night, leading to falling asleep faster and enjoying uninterrupted sleep. Check out our DreamCloud mattress review for a full breakdown of the bed. DreamCloud Classic Hybrid mattress: twin from $399 at DreamCloudThroughout the year, DreamCloud mattress sales offer up to 60% off all beds. This sale doesn't usually change even during major sales period, so you don't have to worry about waiting around for the Labor Day mattress sales. Right now, you can get a queen for $649 (compared to what DreamCloud say is its 'total value' of $1,698). You can also snap up a bedding bundle worth $599 for $179, though this might drop in price the closer we get to Labor Day. You'll also get a lifetime warranty, a 365-night trial and free shipping. So now a question arises: how much do you need to spend on a mattress? Clearly, there's no one-size-fits-all answer here and I don't believe that the more you spend the better is necessarily true. However, the Birch does prove that the more you spend, the more durable and long lasting your bed will be. While foam and spring mattresses usually have a lifespan of seven to 10 years, latex beds can last up to 25 years. But if you're choosing purely based on comfort, the most important thing to consider is your sleeping position. The reason the DreamCloud feels so comfortable to me is because of its soft cushioning foams that suit the side sleeping position. However, a stomach or back sleeper might prefer the Birch Luxe Natural mattress. Ultimately, there's no set amount you should spend on a mattress. While spending under $500 for a queen mattress might mean you won't get the same level of support and durability, anything above $500 from a reputable brand should perform well.

Merit And The Beauty Of Minimalism

As crowded as the beauty industry is, there are still new players entering the space to bring something new and differentiated to the table. From luxury and fashion houses to indie and celebrity brands, the opportunity to venture into beauty remains attractive, despite the competition: valued at $450 billion globally, the market is set to grow 5% yearly through 2030. Yet today's definition of beauty is shifting, and so are the expectations surrounding it. Quality has become the number one driver when it comes to beauty purchases, according to McKinsey's latest State of Beauty report. In an era of overwhelming choice, simplified and effective beauty routines are winning over complex products. And this is where Merit, the LA-based beauty brand founded just a few years ago, has carved its niche: offering a straightforward, high quality and effective routine brought immediate success, generating more than $100 million in sales last year. Founded by Katherine Power in 2021, Merit Beauty was not born chasing trends, nor is it looking to create buzz with celebrity campaigns or online virality. In alignment with its branding, Merit embodies effortless style, discreet elegance and affordable quality. With that in mind, the brand initially catered to older women. But Merit's founding CMO Aila Morin shares a different reality: 'While Merit was created by Xillenials with that age group in mind, we've always had a multi-generational clientele. We see ourselves as less catered to a specific demographic than to a psychographic – a busy woman who sees beauty as more of a utility, not a hobby.' This shows when analyzing consumer interest: Morin shares that 50% of website visitors are between the ages of 25 and 45, with just as many visitors over 55 as under 25. Appealing to such a wide demographic is quite unique, and might speak to why the brand resonates: an intentional focus on effortless and efficacious beauty, which is something many women look for regardless of their age. Merit's limited range, which represents complete beauty routine, brings a breath of fresh air to an industry that is highly overwhelming and often confusing to buyers. By providing a curated selection of daily essentials, it makes it easier and faster for women to get ready for any occasion and feel special when doing so. The brand's positioning is very clear, with Morin explaining: 'We're not a 50-shade palette brand, but we are their everyday essentials, and have established cross-category credibility – so we can be a one-stop shop, from skin prep to makeup, to fragrance and even the bag they walk out the door with.' Since launching, Merit has naturally flirted with other categories – most notably fashion – to bring complementary and desirable accessories to its customers. In 2023, it collaborated with New York fashion brand Proenza Schouler and released a reimagined version of its Signature Bag, gifted with any purchase above $100. 'Our first designer collab with Proenza Schouler sold through 2 months of inventory in less than 3 weeks, and our second collab with Tove last year had a waitlist of 20,000 before it dropped,' shares Morin. Every collaboration is designed with the brand's ethos in mind, and has helped forge brand appeal as well as consumer interest: 'These unique offerings have built a broader ecosystem around Merit, allowing us to tap into consumer loyalty in an increasingly segmented market,' she adds. More recently, Merit partnered with Brooks Brothers as part of the roll-out of 'The Uniform Dry Cleaners' pop-up in NYC this past June, giving visitors the occasion to purchase a limited-edition shirt with personalized embroidery available. The event served as an in-person introduction to the brand's latest launch, its tinted mineral sunscreen, which took years to develop. Sunscreen is the brand's latest category expansion, following the release of its first fragrance in 2024. Product and category expansion is highly intentional: 'We only launch newness when we identify a product that makes sense – a classic reimagined for the modern consumer.' Morin believes that consumer trust and loyalty is in part due to this thoughtful approach to product launch: Merit has built a solid foundation based on quality and efficacy, and customers don't need much convincing now. Customer feedback, beauty editor reviews and awards are unanimous, showing there is still space after all to leave a mark in the beauty market. Merit's success might very well suggest that in an industry highly obsessed with chasing trends and viral moments, there is a lasting advantage in giving consumers simplicity, through products of high quality, reasonable priced and intentionally brought to life. Its selective launches, attractive collaborations, and clear brand ethos have built not just a loyal customer base, but a brand identity that feels timeless, elegant, and approachable. When asked how to stay relevant in one of the most competitive and saturated industries, Aila Morin's answer echoes what the brand stands for: 'Our North Star is simple makeup and skincare that makes you look like you – and regardless of trends, we believe that for our client, that's inherently timeless.'
