Soccer-Richarlison double as slick Spurs outclass Burnley

Soccer Football - Premier League - Tottenham Hotspur v Burnley - Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, Britain - August 16, 2025 Tottenham Hotspur's Richarlison celebrates scoring their second goal with Pedro Porro Action Images via Reuters/Matthew Childs LONDON (Reuters) -Tottenham Hotspur launched the Thomas Frank era in emphatic style with a convincing 3-0 Premier League victory over promoted Burnley on Saturday as Richarlison's majestic double set the tone for a dominant home performance. The Brazilian forward struck in the 10th minute, converting a cross from new recruit Mohammed Kudus, before the pair combined again on the hour mark for a spectacular second goal that showcased Richarlison's aerial prowess. Brennan Johnson added the third six minutes later but it was no meek surrender from the visitors, as they managed to take nearly as many shots as Tottenham without finding the net. "I'm extremely happy with the three goals and the clean sheet. If I'm brutally honest, I felt we were a little bit out of synch at times, but the overall performance was good," Frank said. "I like the mentality and the hard work. We worked a lot on crosses, which is big for me, and we scored from two of them. That's an element I was very happy with." The victory was notable for a Premier League first as Burnley keeper Martin Dubravka conceded a corner under new rules, for holding the ball for more than eight seconds. Spurs took the lead when they won the ball back in Burnley's half with their high press, and Kudus found space on the flank to whip in a cross for Richarlison to fire the ball past Dubravka. Spurs had the lion's share of possession and although Burnley responded well and grew into the game by pressing high and forcing turnovers, the visitors failed to beat Guglielmo Vicario. Frank's side came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, pinning Burnley back for long periods and they were rewarded when Richarlison grabbed his second. ACROBATIC EFFORT Kudus created space on the right to cross and Richarlison, stationed near the penalty spot, volleyed home with an acrobatic effort reminiscent of his overhead kick against Serbia at the 2022 World Cup. "Thank you for the assists," Richarlison said as he patted Kudus on the shoulder. "I'm so happy with this guy. Next week he deserves to score because he works so hard for the team." Spurs had a spring in their step and as Burnley looked to gain a foothold in the game, the home side won the ball back in midfield through Richarlison and Pape Matar Sarr set Johnson on his way before the winger slipped the ball past Dubravka. "We went a goal down and responded well, creating chances. We missed a massive chance on about 58 minutes to get back in it," Burnley manager Scott Parker said. "Then they produce a world-class finish and it took the game away from us." Richarlison looked disappointed at not being given the chance to bag a hat-trick when Frank substituted him, but his replacement Dominic Solanke nearly made it 4-0 when he spun on the spot and fired wide. Kudus received a standing ovation for his two assists and the Spurs fans also showed their support for Mathys Tel, who had been racially abused online after their Super Cup defeat by Paris St Germain on Wednesday. Soccer-Dazzling double for Richarlison, winning return to Premier League for Sunderland

Soccer Football - Premier League - Tottenham Hotspur v Burnley - Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, Britain - August 16, 2025 Tottenham Hotspur's Richarlison celebrates scoring their second goal with Pedro Porro Action Images via Reuters/Matthew Childs LONDON (Reuters) -Tottenham Hotspur kicked off the Thomas Frank era in style with a 3-0 win over Burnley, powered by a dazzling double from Richarlison, on the first Saturday of the Premier League season. Sunderland celebrated their return to England's top flight with a 3-0 victory over West Ham United, while Aston Villa survived defender Ezri Konsa's dismissal to salvage a 0-0 draw against Newcastle United with the visitors missing want-away striker Alexander Isak. On the south coast, Rodrigo Muniz's last-gasp goal gave Fulham a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion. Wolverhampton Wanderers were hosting Manchester City in Saturday's late game. At Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs gave Frank a comprehensive victory in his first home match in charge, while it was a harsh welcome back to the league for Burnley. Richarlison slotted home Mohammed Kudus's cross in the 10th minute, and the Brazilian linked up with Kudus again on the hour mark when he dived to fire home Kudus's cross with a stunning acrobatic volley. Brennan Johnson added a third goal on the counter-attack six minutes later. The victory was notable for a Premier League first as Burnley keeper Martin Dubravka conceded the first corner kick of the season under new rules after holding the ball for more than eight seconds. Sunderland had a dream start to their return to the top flight after eight years at a jubilant Stadium of Light. The opening half saw the hosts still finding their rhythm against a disjointed Hammers side but they grew into the game, and Eliezer Mayenda broke the deadlock in the 61st minute. Sunderland kept up the momentum and Daniel Ballard scored 12 minutes later, while Wilson Isidor had the home fans in a frenzy with another goal in injury time. At Villa Park, the home side were thrown into disarray in the 66th minute when Konsa was shown a straight red cardfor pulling down Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon while he was in hot pursuit of a through ball from Anthony Elanga. Newcastle continued to fire crosses into the box but without a recognised centre-forward such as Isak, who wants to leave amid interest from champions Liverpool, they could not convert them and the game ended in stalemate. Villa boss Unai Emery said he and his team should never accept dropping two points at home. "With the circumstances we had with the red card and how we were the last 30 minutes more or less, with added time, we have to accept it," said the Spaniard. Brighton appeared to be heading for a victory after Matt O'Riley's goal from the penalty spot early in the second half, but Fulham salvaged a draw from a corner in the 96th minute when substitute Muniz lashed in from close range. "For sure it feels painful," Brighton manager Fabian Huerzeler told the BBC. "We should score the second goal and I think the game would be over. That's football." Richarlison stars as Spurs boss Frank seals first win

LONDON: Thomas Frank earned his first Premier League win as Tottenham manager as Richarlison's brilliant overhead kick inspired a 3-0 success against Burnley on Saturday. Frank was hired from Brentford to replace Ange Postecoglou after the Australian was sacked at the end of last season. The Dane made a good first impression in Tottenham's opening game of the top-flight season thanks to a majestic display from Richarlison. The Brazil forward scored twice, including an eye-catching acrobatic strike, to reward his manager for selecting him instead of Dominic Solanke. Brennan Johnson hit Tottenham's third to complete an uplifting start to the Frank era. Even winning the Europa League to secure Champions League qualification did not save Postecoglou after Tottenham ended 17th in the Premier League – their lowest finish since 1976-77. Frank's impressive work establishing Brentford in the Premier League convinced Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy that he is the right man to return the club to the right end of the table. Frank nearly kicked off his reign with a trophy in midweek, but Tottenham lost on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup after blowing a two-goal lead in the closing stages. That solid display against the Champions League holders was encouraging for Frank. The efficient defeat of Burnley provided more optimism for the sell-out crowd at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Burnley won promotion from the Championship last season largely thanks to a superb defence that kept 30 clean-sheets in 46 league games. Scott Parker's team conceded only 16 goals in the second tier, setting an English Football League record. Tottenham's ruthless finishing showed Burnley will need more than defensive resilience to avoid an immediate return to the Championship. While Postecoglou was criticised for his refusal to change his attacking philosophy during his turbulent two-year Tottenham reign. Frank is an arch pragmatist. The 51-year-old plays the percentages with a focus on set-pieces and a willingness to use long-ball tactics, but this was far more than just a route one victory. Frank was given a warm reception by Tottenham fans before kick-off and he responded with a wave to all four sides of the ground. The Dane admitted he would feel nervous during his home debut, but Lucas Bergvall almost eased that anxiety in the first minute with a strike that forced a good save from Martin Dubravka. It took just 10 minutes for Richarlison to give Frank the perfect welcome present. Mohammed Kudus, signed from West Ham in the close season, whipped over a tempting cross and Richarlison finished with aplomb, spinning to fire past Dubravka. After scoring just five times last season, it was a much-needed boost for the former Everton forward. Tottenham went into their shell for a while and Josh Laurent nearly punished them with a long-range drive that flashed just wide. Richarlison had a chance to double Tottenham's lead but his initial shot was blocked by Maxime Esteve before his follow-up was saved by Dubravka. Undeterred, Richarlison struck in stunning styte in the 60th minute. Kudus was the provider with a pin-point cross. Richarlison launched himself into the air for a spectacular bicycle kick that whistled into the net from 10 yards. Tottenham's Mathys Tel came on to applause in the second half after he was racially abused on social media for a missed penalty against PSG. Johnson wrapped up Frank's maiden win in the 66th minute as he slotted home from Pape Sarr's pass.
