Vizianagaram District Tourism Officer Kumara Swamy, chief guest at the Zilla Parishad High School in Jami said: 'Academic standards of students will improve with the joint efforts of parents and teachers.'
Jami ZP High school headmaster S.V. Sekhar Kumar urged students to plant at least one sapling in the current monsoon season as a token of love for their mothers. He said: 'The 'EK Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative has inspired many children and they have planted saplings in their areas of residence as well as within the school premises.'
At the Gantyada Zilla Parishad High School, headmistress Alamanda Jhansi urged parents to ensure children study at least two hours daily at home to complete their homework and prepare for the monthly, quarterly and final examinations. Additionally, she appealed to local public representatives to provide a RO water plant for the school to ensure safe drinking water for the students. Local leaders assured that they would take it up with Minister Kondapalli Srinivas, a native of Gantyada village.

Gurgaon: In a move to combat urban environmental challenges, the city is set to host one of NCR's largest urban forest projects. The 750-acre 'Matri Van' along Gurgaon-Faridabad Road will serve as a green buffer, combining ecological conservation with public recreation spaces. "We're not just planting saplings. We're dedicating an entire forest to mothers," said Yadav, adding that invasive Prosopis juliflora shrubs would be removed to revive degraded forest patches. Public amenities will include walking tracks, yoga zones, and forest interpretation signage, with 10 thatched huts planned as interim rest points. "India has committed to creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5–3 billion tonnes of CO₂, equivalent by 2030 through afforestation. Projects like Matri Van are expected to play a significant role in achieving that target," he added. The project's funding combines multiple sources, including Rs 7.5 crore from development and CSR partners, Rs 2.5 crore from govt agencies, and additional allocations from various schemes, totalling Rs 14.7 crore. An extra Rs 10 crore could be sought from central govt schemes, officials suggested. "The plantation drive will be phased. The company assigned the project will have to maintain it for three years," said Subhash Yadav, the chief conservator of forests in South Haryana. Once complete, 'Matri Van' will be one of the largest consolidated green zones of Delhi-NCR, designed not only for ecological restoration but also as a public space for learning, leisure, and climate resilience. New Delhi, Jul 31 (PTI) India untertook plantations over 93.7 lakh hectares of land in the last five years under various schemes, with Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and Gujarat recording the highest plantation areas, the Centre said on Thursday. Responding to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Environment, Kirti Vardhan Singh, said the government is currently carrying out afforestation and tree plantation under the overarching theme of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign launched on June 5, 2024. The initiative aims to increase the country's green cover through voluntary planting of trees involving a 'Whole of Government" and 'Whole of Society" approach. Singh said afforestation is being implemented through the existing schemes such as the National Mission for Green India, Nagar Van Yojana, Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitat and Tangible Benefits (MISHTI), and the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA), along with specific state-funded programmes. 'There is no new scheme on the anvil," Singh said. According to official data, Uttar Pradesh led the country by conducting plantations over 23.49 lakh hectares from 2020-21 to 2024-25, followed by Telangana with 15.50 lakh hectares and Gujarat with 11.38 lakh hectares. The other major contributors included Odisha (5.03 lakh hectares), Andhra Pradesh (5.86 lakh hectares), Rajasthan (3.78 lakh hectares) and Madhya Pradesh (4.05 lakh hectares). The total plantation area across all states and UTs stood at 93.77 lakh hectares during the period. Singh said the survival rate of the planted trees is 'dynamic" and depends on factors such as soil quality, climatic conditions, water availability, grazing, fire, pest attacks and post-plantation care. Regular assessments are carried out by the state forest departments, with corrective maintenance measures taken when necessary. A comparison of forest and tree cover between the India State of Forest Reports 2019 and 2023 shows an increase of 20,080.95 sq km in the country, he said. On whether any mandatory rule is being considered for tree plantation during building construction approvals, Singh said the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification, 2006, and its amendments already mandate tree plantation for certain categories of projects. The terms of reference for EIA study require a greenbelt and landscaping plan, while environmental clearances include binding conditions for greenbelt development in addition to compensatory planting for any trees removed, he said. The ministry, along with states and UTs, also encourages voluntary plantations and provides necessary support wherever applicable. The minister said tree plantation, including those carried out on special occasions, is monitored through a multi-tiered mechanism involving both state and Central agencies. States and UTs conduct physical verification and submit geo-tagged photographs and .kml files of the plantation sites to the ministry. AP sets Guinness World Record for largest PTM 2.0
Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh has earned a Guinness World Record for hosting the world's largest Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM), with over 53.4 lakh parents and teachers participating. Held on July 10, the event, dubbed Mega PTM 2.0, drew a total of 1.52 crore attendees, including students, alumni, School Management Committee (SMC) members, and philanthropists. This historic achievement underscores Andhra Pradesh's commitment to transforming public education and aligning government schools with global standards, said a statement from Samagra Shiksha on Monday. The initiative supports the state's vision to become a 'Quantum Valley,' fostering innovation and empowering youth through education. HRD minister Nara Lokesh expressed pride in the global recognition, dedicating the honor to the state's teachers for their tireless efforts. 'The Guinness World Record validates our mission to rejuvenate public education and promote inclusive learning. We dedicate this award to our teaching community,' he said. The record was confirmed after a rigorous audit of data from over 61,000 schools, including photographs, videos, verified participant counts, and independent witness statements, all collected via the state's LEAP app. This digital platform enhances education delivery by providing interactive content for students, structured lesson plans for teachers, and robust tools for the education department.'Over 40 auditors worked tirelessly to verify the data, ensuring the award's integrity,' said B Srinivasa Rao, state project director, Samagra Shiksha Andhra Pradesh. He added, 'This recognition will inspire us to further strengthen the Andhra Model Public Education system, ensuring quality and equitable education for all.' The official Guinness World Record certificate will be presented at a ceremony in Amaravati during the second week of August.
