Nostalgic foodies hail 'dream come true' as beloved 90s sweet is set to return to UK shelves
Nostalgic shoppers are brimming with excitement after it was announced that a retro sweet is returning to supermarket shelves.
Opal Fruits were all the rage through the 1980s and 1990s before being axed in 1998 and now they're set to make a comeback in Sainsbury's, Tesco and Morrisons stores next month.
Mars Wrigley is releasing 138g pouches of the beloved sweets in the original strawberry, lemon, orange and lime flavours - however, fans will need to be quick if they want to nab themselves a packet.
Only a fixed volume of the candies is being produced and once they're sold out, they won't be restocked.
The '90's nostalgia trend' was cited as the reason behind the tasty chews' surprise return.
Opal Fruits was first launched in the 1960s before being rebranded to Starburst in 1998 to align with advertising in the US.
After the rebrand, a blackcurrant chew was added but the purple flavour will be not be included in May's launch.
They were rereleased for a limited time to much success in 2020 and 2021 and for an apparent 'final time' in 2024.
Nostalgic foodies delighted as retro sweet treat Opal Fruits returns to UK supermarket shelves in May for a limited time
Brits are delighted by the news Opal Fruits are coming back with some recalling the 'Made to Make Your Mouth Water' jingle from the old TV commercial.
'OH MY DAYS. THIS IS A DREAM COME TRUE. LIME OPAL FRUITS,' one person exclaimed.
'Opal fruits are back?!?' another asked and a third said: 'Limited time only, Opal Fruits are coming back, I used to love them, these retro sweets will only be around for a short time'.
'Oi, Mars! Stop it with this limited edition Opal Fruits nonsense and bring them back permanently. I bought more in the last run than I have Starburst in all 27 years,' someone confessed.
Skittles Senior Brand Manager Florence McGivern said: 'Our new limited edition Opal Fruits SKU will be as iconic as it was in the 90s, giving fans the chance to revisit the strawberry, lemon, orange and lime flavours from decades ago.
'The 90' nostalgia trend continues to resonate strongly with consumers, and we are giving them the chance to reconnect with memories from that time.
'This limited edition follows successful runs in 2021 and 2024, and we are especially excited about this release as we continue to celebrate the rich heritage of an iconic brand.'
Although fans have gone wild over the return, it's not the first time the old branding has been revived.
In 2020, the much-loved chewy sweets reappeared on supermarket shelves in the UK for a limited time - in a 152g pouch costing £1.
The retro confectionery was sold in Poundland, B&M, Home Bargains, Iceland, Savers and The Range.
It also came back 10 years after it was first discontinued, for a limited time in the year 2008.

Bruno Tonioli's Britain's Got Talent future 'in doubt' as ITV eyes up KSI
Bruno Tonioli may have to bow out of his role on Britain's Got Talent due to scheduling issue with a US show and KSI has been tipped as the favourite replacement Britain's Got Talent judge Bruno Tonioli may have to face the axe from the ITV show as filming dates for the next series is said to clash with his US show, Dancing With The Stars. And now it looks as though Simon Cowell and production are eyeing up his replacement. According to reports, KSI proved popular among viewers and so it looks as though he will be the obvious choice to take over Bruno's position on the show. The 69-year-old former Strictly Come Dancing judge has been on the show for two years after taking over from David Walliams in 2023. Meanwhile KSI, who boasts a social media following of 75 million people has already experienced being a judge on the show following a number of guest appearances. He took over from Bruno during the times the former professional dancer was away filming in America. A TV insider told The Sun: "There is no doubt that KSI's social media clout is exactly what the BGT panel needs, and Simon loves the edge he brings. " The source explained: "TV isn't getting the viewing figures it did a decade ago, so to have someone who can tell their followers to sit down and watch the box can have a real impact." They added: "Because of the scheduling issues, insiders are certain that Simon will offer KSI a more long-term position in the show." When asked his thoughts about KSI in reference to his stint on the ITV show, he told the publication: "We're both young, attractive, multi-talented stars, known the world over. Joking aside, I think KSI is fantastic — a real charming man, full of energy." He explained: "We attended the Brits together too, which was a fabulous evening." KSI's first appearance on the show was in February and soon after his fans called for TV bosses to make him a permanent fixture. The insider added: "We had a similar situation last year. Bruno was filming Dancing With The Stars in October but was still available to film BGT auditions in Blackpool. " They then said: "In this year's series, KSI stepped in as a guest judge for both Bruno and Simon on different audition dates."

Meghan Markle's honest one-word response when asked about meeting Kate Middleton
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Meeting the in-laws can be nerve-wracking, and for Meghan Markle, that meant getting to know Royal relatives when her romance with Harry bloomed. The Duchess of Sussex shared her initial thoughts on Kate after a private dinner hosted by Kate and her then soon-to-be husband. Harry first noticed Meghan on Instagram in 2016, leading to that fateful dinner at Soho House in London. Their relationship quickly progressed with more dates and a week spent in the great outdoors together. Following their engagement in 2017, they sat down with BBC's Mishal Hussein to reminisce about Meghan's introductory encounter with Kate. During the conversation, Harry enthused, "It was exciting I mean I've - you know I'd been seeing her for a period of time when I literally didn't tell anybody at all." He added, "And then William was longing to meet her and so was Catherine, so you know, being our neighbours, we managed to get that in a couple of - well quite a few times now and Catherine has been absolutely..." To which Meghan succinctly interjected: "Wonderful.", reports the Mirror. Meghan fondly remembered how the Royal Family had extended a warm welcome to her, and she also harked back to the memorable occasion when she met the late Queen for the first time. Meghan reflected on her admiration for the Queen, saying: "I think, you know, to be able to meet her through his lens, not just with his honour and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother, all of those layers have been so important for me so that when I met her I had such a deep understanding and of course incredible respect for being able to have that time with her. And we've had a really - she's - she's an incredible woman." Initially, there were expectations that Meghan and Kate might form a close bond due to their similar experiences of marrying into the Royal Family. However, it appears that their differing personalities prevented a strong connection, and Meghan later described experiencing a 'jarring' moment upon first encountering Kate. In the second episode of the six-part Netflix series 'Harry and Meghan', Meghan recounted her first meeting with William and Kate: "When Will and Kate came over, and I met her for the first time, they came over for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot. I was a hugger. I've always been a hugger, I didn't realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits." She went on to express her surprise at the persistence of formality within Royal life: "I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside. There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door and go 'You can relax now', but that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me." In his revealing memoir 'Spare', Prince Harry delves into the complex dynamics between his wife, Meghan, and his sister-in-law, Kate. He shares anecdotes of the early stages of tension, including a dispute over bridesmaid dresses before his wedding that reportedly left Meghan in tears and a moment where Kate "grimaced" at the borrowing of her lip gloss. Additionally, Harry recounts an instance when Kate demanded an apology from Meghan after being accused of having "baby brain" in the aftermath of Prince Louis's birth. Harry also describes a particular dinner where he sensed a potential mismatch between Meghan and Kate. In 'Spare', he notes how Meghan prepared the meal and the conversation flowed smoothly, covering topics like Wimbledon and 'Suits'. He observes: "The only possibly discordant note I could think of was the marked difference in how the two women dressed, which both of them seemed to notice. Meg: ripped jeans, barefoot. Kate: done up to the nines. No big deal, I thought."

Danny Jones' wife Georgia 'set for new This Morning role' after kiss scandal
McFly's Danny Jones' wife is reportedly in talks for a permanent role on This Morning after impressing TV bosses with her candid personality when discussing post-natal depression The wife of McFly's star Danny Jones is being considered for a more permanent role on This Morning after impressing bosses with her ability to open up about post-natal depression. Georgia Jones, who is a mum of one, is being lined up to be more of a regular on the popular daytime show. But this comes just months after Danny was allegedly caught kissing his I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here campmate, Maura Higgins. The pair were caught, in what has been described as an intimate embrace, in February at a BRITS after-party. Weathering their rough patch, Georgia, 38, now appears to be focusing on her TV career. A source told The Sun that her ability to sit down with other mums who have also experienced depression following the birth of their child, caught the attention of bosses. The insider told the publication: "She has interviewed other mums who have experienced post Natal depression and is very open herself. Producers are hopeful that if she if the collaboration goes well Georgia will become a new face of the show. " They added: "She has a really successful podcast and a loyal following which is ideal for helping to boost viewing figures." Danny has also spoken about Georgia's experience with post-natal depression while on I'm A Celeb. At the time, he revealed: "Looking back she had post Natal depression and that is so hard and what made it harder is that she didn't know. I wanted to try and fix it and go 'come on you can do this' and that's not what she needed." Last month, as a nod to Mental Health Week, Georgia posted a message on social media to remind her followers to check on their mum friends. She wrote: "A little thought from me. When I had little man. i didn't know this new me. I didn't particularly like her. I hadn't met her and I doubted her ability.I wanted the old me back, but without realising it, I needed to feel it and cry. I hid the doubt and lack of control I felt." She added: "'d never experienced any wobble with my mental was new too. So I did the worst thing. I pushed it down and tried to hide Can you new mummies promise me one be honest, feel the feels." Georgia concluded: "Parenting is not perfect." And while her career appears to be going from strength to strength, the same does not seem tom be the case with her marriage. According to reports, the couple no longer have the same innocent relationship they shared before Danny's alleged drunken kiss. And it has been more than a month since the pair have been pictured together. At the end of last month Georgia gave her followers a peek into her life, but did not mention Danny. Sharing a number of pictures with her son Cooper and friends, she captioned the post saying: "Life lately… Friends, family, filming, fresh air and fun… lots of lovely fun." At the time of the scandal, Danny made an apology for "putting them in this situation." He also continued to stay at the family's west London home. Sources have told the MailOnline that the pair are more similar to "passing ships" than a happy couple.
