Father Claims Daughter Was Murdered, Not Suicide After Odisha Student's Self-Immolation Over Sexual Harassment

Hans India16-07-2025
The father of a 20-year-old B.Ed student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Odisha's Balasore has made explosive allegations following his daughter's tragic death, claiming she was murdered rather than having committed suicide. The young woman died from severe burn injuries after setting herself on fire on the college campus, an act her father now describes as the result of a deliberate conspiracy by institutional authorities.
The grieving father's emotional statements reveal his belief that his daughter was systematically targeted and pushed toward this desperate act because she dared to speak out against harassment. He expressed his conviction that the incident was not a spontaneous decision but rather the culmination of a calculated plot designed to silence his daughter's voice.
In his anguished testimony, the father questioned the circumstances surrounding his daughter's final moments, particularly focusing on a private meeting she was called to attend in the principal's office. He demanded answers about what transpired during that closed-door encounter and why the family was not informed about the meeting. His questions highlighted concerns about the institutional handling of his daughter's case and the events leading up to her tragic decision.
The student had previously filed a formal complaint with the college's Internal Complaints Committee, accusing Sameer Ranjan Sahoo, the Head of Department, of persistent sexual harassment. According to her father's account, she had disclosed that the accused professor was demanding sexual favors, creating an environment of fear and intimidation that ultimately became unbearable.
The father revealed that his daughter had not shared the complete extent of her ordeal with him, but had indicated that the accused was applying continuous pressure on her. He recounted how Sahoo had even attempted to reassure him personally, stating that as her teacher, there was no cause for concern. This interaction now appears particularly troubling in light of the subsequent events.
The young woman's complaints had allegedly been met with institutional indifference, with the college principal Dillip Ghose and other staff members failing to take appropriate action despite her repeated pleas for help. The father expressed particular anger toward the Internal Committee members, claiming they had subjected his daughter to additional harassment by confronting her in the presence of her accused harasser.
The student sustained 90 percent burns in the incident and was rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where she succumbed to her injuries on Monday night. Her death has triggered widespread outrage across Odisha, with political leaders and civil society groups demanding justice and accountability from the educational institution.
Former Chief Minister and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik has directly held the BJP-led state government responsible for what he characterized as "institutional betrayal" and "planned injustice." In his strongly worded response, Patnaik emphasized that the student's death was not an accident but the direct result of systemic failure and deliberate neglect.
Patnaik's statement highlighted the disturbing reality of how institutional failures can have fatal consequences, noting that the victim had exhausted all available channels seeking justice but was ultimately failed by the very system designed to protect her. He described the incident as evidence of a system that chose silence over support when intervention was most needed.
The family's demands for a comprehensive investigation extend beyond the accused professor to include scrutiny of the principal's role and the functioning of the Internal Complaints Committee. They seek answers about the decision-making process that led to the private meeting and the institutional response to their daughter's harassment complaints.
This tragic incident has brought renewed attention to the effectiveness of internal complaint mechanisms in educational institutions and the protection available to students who report harassment. The case raises serious questions about institutional accountability and the consequences of failing to address sexual harassment complaints promptly and effectively.
The father's allegations of conspiracy suggest that the death was not simply the result of individual misconduct but potentially involved systemic efforts to silence his daughter's voice. As investigations continue, the focus will likely expand to examine the broader institutional culture and the adequacy of existing protection mechanisms for students facing harassment.
The case has become a symbol of the broader struggle for justice in cases of sexual harassment within educational institutions, highlighting the urgent need for robust and effective complaint resolution systems that protect rather than further victimize those who speak out against misconduct.

Bengal Protests To Mark RG Kar Case Anniversary From August 8

Kolkata: Starting from this weekend and continuing till the next, West Bengal is all set to be rocked again over protest movements by various groups on the first anniversary of the rape and murder of a woman junior doctor of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata in August last year. The body of the victim was recovered from a seminar hall within the hospital premises on the morning of August 9. While the sole convict in the case, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy had already been sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court, even after a year, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had been unable to complete its investigation on the alleged "larger conspiracy" behind the crime. Hence, while the movement last year was mainly targeted at the state administration in West Bengal and the ruling Trinamool Congress, this movement will have a larger perspective, also focussing on the alleged inability of the CBI to complete a fool-proof investigation in the matter. The parents of the victim have given a 'Nabanna Abhijan (march to the state secretariat)' call on August 9 and appealed to all political parties to join in the procession, demanding justice for their daughter on her death anniversary. Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who first floated the idea of involving the victim's parents there, has extended full-fledged support to the protest march. On Wednesday, Adhikari accused the West Bengal government of allegedly using its entire police administration to stop the protest march. The BJP leader stated that a special police briefing has been convened on Wednesday evening, which almost all top IPS officers of West Bengal Police have been asked to attend. Using his social media handle, LoP Adhikari, without mentioning Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's name, said she has gone to Jhargram to attend her events after deploying the police force to protect the state secretariat. "Abhaya's parents, a year after the hellish episode that happened to their child, have called for a 'Nabanna Abhijan' to demand answers from the state's police and health minister for her failure over the incident. But out of that fear, the honourable person has already fled the city on the pretext of an administrative program in Jhargram!" LoP Adhikari alleged. Sharing a copy of the police note for the briefing later in the day, the BJP leader said, "To protect her chair at the state secretariat, all the big police officers are meeting today at the police line in Shibpur, Howrah, to make arrangements for how to send the entire state police on the road!" Besides the march to the state secretariat, several protest programmes have been announced by other pressure groups from August 8 to August 15 to observe the anniversary of the tragedy. Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD), West Bengal, Medical Service Centre, Service Doctors affiliated to All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO), West Bengal Doctors' Forum, and Association of Health Service Doctors, will organise multiple protest movements. The convenor of JPD, Punyabrata, said that the state government had failed miserably in ensuring the safety and security of Bengal's daughters in hospitals and colleges. "Even after the tragic incident at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital a year ago, another rape took place in a law college in South Kolkata. This shows that there is a need to hit the streets once again to demand justice for our daughter and hold the government accountable," Punyabrata added. On August 8, the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Forum (WBJDF) will take out a torch rally from College Square to Shyambazar in north Kolkata at 9 P.M. and from midnight to 4 A.M. the next day, they will organise a sit-in at Shyambazar five-point crossing. On August 9, JPD and Abhaya Mancha will tie rakhis in the morning to send the message of providing safety and security to the people. At 4 P.M., doctors will assemble at Hazra crossing to take out a march to Kalighat, near Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence. At 6 P.M. on the same day, the WBHDF has given a call for a gathering at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital. On August 14, rallies and protest meetings will be organised by doctors and the common people. At midnight, another 'Reclaim the Night' event has been planned across Kolkata where the common man, including women of the household, will take to the streets to demand justice.

7 held for attack on Suvendu's convoy in Cooch Behar

1 2 Kolkata/Jalpaiguri: Seven people were arrested by Cooch Behar Police on Wednesday in connection with the attack on the convoy of Bengal leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari. Sources said the arrested included TMC workers and Trinamool Yuva functionaries. The arrested were remanded to five days' judicial custody. Meanwhile, Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya moved a notice in Rajya Sabha under Rule 267 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of State (Rajya Sabha), seeking a discussion on the attack, which he described as "an attack on democracy". Adhikari's convoy came under attack in Cooch Behar on Tuesday, when he arrived to attend a protest rally and submit a memorandum to the SP regarding alleged assaults on BJP workers. As the convoy reached Khagrabari, a group of alleged TMC supporters attacked the convoy. In his complaint, Adhikari named 41 persons, including state minister, Udayan Guha. "We are not going to leave them. If Udayan Guha was directly involved in the incident, the police's role cannot be ruled out," Adhikari said at a meeting on Wednesday. Those who disrespect Bengalis and the Bengali language will be shown black flags," Guha said.

UN says Rwanda-backed rebels killed over 300 civilians in Congo in past month

Dakar, Aug 6 (AP) Rwanda-backed rebels killed at least 319 people over the past month in eastern Congo, the UN human rights chief said Wednesday, describing the toll as one of the largest documented in such attacks since the M23 rebels resurfaced in 2022. Citing firsthand accounts, UN human rights chief Volker Turk said in a statement that the rebels, backed by members of the Rwandan Defence Force, targeted four villages in North Kivu province's Rutshuru territory between July 9 and July 21. The continuing violence could threaten Qatar-led efforts to get Congo and the rebels to sign a permanent peace deal by the goal of August 18. One of the deal's conditions is the protection of civilians and safe return of millions of people displaced by the conflict. There was no immediate M23 comment. The M23 early this year seized two key cities in eastern Congo in a major escalation, with the help of neighbouring Rwandan forces. Congo has long been wracked by deadly conflict in its mineral-rich east, with more than 100 armed groups. The two sides on July 19 signed a declaration of principles in Qatar to end the fighting and commit to a comprehensive peace agreement that would include the restoration of state authorities in key eastern cities controlled by the insurgents. The new UN statement said deadly attacks occurred in the days following that signing. 'I am appalled by the attacks on civilians by the M23 and other armed groups" despite the declaration, the UN human rights chief said, calling for an immediate end to attacks on civilians.
