Claims of forging teacher's signature, taunts led to suicide, say batchmates as dental student at Sharda University dies by suicide
Room 1209, part of a four-room apartment located on the 12th floor, stood locked on Saturday, hours after Jyoti was found hanging inside.
The incident would later lead to the arrest of faculty members Dr Mahinder Singh Chauhan and Dr Shairy Vashist on the charge of abetment of suicide.
Jyoti's batchmates remembered her as intelligent and bright. 'I have her notes that we prepared for the last semester,' said a student.
Another student said, 'It all began a week ago. What happened to her, happens to all of us here almost every day, she just could not take it.'
According to her batchmates, the 'humiliation' began last Friday when Jyoti went to obtain the signature of Dr Chauhan on her practical file.
'Our second-year exams will begin from Tuesday. Before that we have to finish all lab work and complete our files for all six subjects,' said one student.
'We were all waiting in line for Dr Chauhan. She was just ahead of me. When her turn came, she handed over her file to him. Moments before the professor would sign, he flipped the pages and looked at the signature on her last practical work. He then claimed, 'These are not my signature… you have forged it',' the student added.
'As she denied his claims, the professor asked her to leave immediately. She left in tears. Her file was confiscated and a call was made to her parents,' another student said.
On Monday, Jyoti's father visited the university and requested the professors to not mistreat her, the students said.
'But yesterday, when she went to collect her file, she was taunted for complaining about the teachers to her parents. 'Both (Dr Chauhan and Dr Vashist) were looking at our practical files. When her turn came, they started to taunt her. She was in tears again…,' a student said.
Once classes were over on Friday, the 21-year-old was seen returning to her room.
'She was found dead around 8.45 pm by her friend, who had gone to check on her after her parents called to say that Jyoti was not answering their calls,' the student added.

Women forced to use toilets in front of men: Report on US detention centres
A report has exposed the inhumane conditions faced by undocumented migrants and the degrading treatment of detainees at several US immigration facilities. Shortly after landing in Tamil Nadu for work, 6 men from Jharkhand abducted, families get video calls with gun to their head
Six migrant workers from Borwa village in Jharkhand's Jamtara district were allegedly abducted shortly after arriving in Tamil Nadu for work on July 16. The youth, aged between 20 and 21, had just deboarded a train and were en route to a job site when they were allegedly kidnapped by a local gang in what appeared to be a premeditated extortion attempt, officials said. Jamtara MLA and state Health Minister Irfan Amsari took cognisance of the case. According to his office, the abductors identified the young men as migrants based on their body language and dialect, after which the gang reportedly misled and forcibly took the group away in a bus. 'Later, the abductors made video calls to the victims' families, threatening to kill the youth if a ransom wasn't paid. Holding pistols to their heads and knives to their necks, the gang demanded an initial payment of Rs 2.5 lakh. They forced the families to transfer Rs 30,000 first, followed by Rs 50,000 with the help of villagers pooling funds together,' said Azharuddin, the MLA's personal secretary. 'These families are extremely poor. That's why the boys had gone out of the state to work. They panicked and did whatever they could,' he said. 'Had the issue not come to our notice in time, it could've ended in tragedy.' The MLA escalated the matter and informed the Chief Secretary, the Tamil Nadu DGP, and the Jharkhand DGP. Prompt coordination between Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand authorities ensured swift action. Tamil Nadu police managed to trace the men after the abductors had already withdrawn cash using ATMs and left the youth near Salem railway station. According to official information, the rescued youth were later brought to the Salem police station, and arrangements are underway to get them safely back to Jharkhand. Police in Jharkhand have recorded the statements of some of the men, who used borrowed phones since their own mobile devices were also stolen by the abductors. Azharuddin said one of the men managed to call the family from someone else's phone and confirm that they were safe. 'That's how the police were able to track their location.' 'This incident could have been catastrophic if action was delayed even by 15 or 20 minutes,' he said. 'It's a matter of grave concern and raises questions about the security of migrant workers in destination states.' Bengaluru court orders removal of over 8,800 online links about Dharmasthala ‘mass burial'
A Bengaluru court has ordered the removal of 8,842 online links containing allegedly defamatory content related to the claims of mass graves, disappearances, and crimes against women and students over the past two decades in Dharmasthala, a temple town in Karnataka, The Times of India reported on Tuesday. The order, passed on July 18 by the Additional City Civil and Sessions Court, came on a petition filed by Harshendra Kumar D, secretary of the Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Education Society and brother of Bharatiya Janata Party MP D Veerendra Heggade. The Heggade family manages the Dharmasthala temple and institutions associated with it. Earlier this month, a first information report was registered in Dharmasthala based on a complaint by a sanitary worker, who alleged that he was forced to bury the bodies of several women bearing signs of sexual assault. On July 19, the Karnataka government announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team to probe the case. The court on July 18 granted an ex-parte injunction – a temporary order passed without hearing the other side – directing that the links be 'deleted or de-indexed' immediately. It also barred media organisations from publishing or sharing any content related to the petitioner. Among the links to be deleted are coverage of the allegations by newspapers, TV channels, digital portals, YouTube creators and social media users, according to Newslaundry. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for August 5. In his petition, Kumar had alleged that the links in question included 'false, baseless, reckless and defamatory ' claims against him, his brother, their family and the institutions they manage, The Indian Express reported. He added that 'though there is no allegation' against him or his family members in the FIR or the investigation, 'vested interested persons are continuing to make false, frivolous, baseless and vexatious video contents', according to The Indian Express. Kumar's petition reportedly named 338 respondents, including YouTube, Meta, Reddit and several social activists from Karnataka and Kerala.
