To channel the elegance of a '90s icon, these are the fashion choices to make
Newcomers to royal-watching might consider California-born Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, the ultimate American princess. Marrying the blue-blooded, redheaded Prince Harry is a step in the right direction but the former Suits actor still has to bow down to the style credentials of the late Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
After marrying American 'royalty' John F. Kennedy Jr in 1996, fashion executive Carolyn epitomised the international ideal of streamlined sophistication, rivalling her mother-in-law, Jackie Kennedy, and the crowned and tiara-wearing heads of Europe.
Recent images from the upcoming, Ryan Murphy-produced series American Love Story about Carolyn and John, who both died in a plane crash in 1999, caused an online uproar for not capturing the ethereal blonde's elusive essence. Here are the ingredients for avoiding the keyboard warriors and emulating and updating Bessette-Kennedy's eternal chic.
Make it sleek
Bessette-Kennedy's wedding dress, by designer Narcisco Rodriguez (they worked together at Calvin Klein when she was a public relations executive), was a masterpiece of '90s minimalism. The cowl-neck white slip dress dismissed ornament and excess, making Bessette-Kennedy the star.
In a 2016 interview with Glamour, the then Meghan Markle acknowledged its impact when asked about her favourite celebrity wedding dress: 'Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Everything goals.'
To make an elegant impact in the evening, prioritise minimal draping over tailoring to create a fluid fit that skims the figure.
Make it monochrome
Black, white and neutrals were Bessette-Kennedy's preferred palette but feel free to add drama with cool creams, soothing blues and fresh greens. Discipline is key when wearing one colour from top to toe.
Update the restraint of the '90s with smooth sequins or subtle lace details for a more modern approach to minimalism.
Bessette-Kennedy would break the monochrome rule to wear crisp white shirts with skirts. A T-shirt-style blouse over a satin skirt offers the same cool contrast without drifting into officewear.
Make it look easy
Leave outrageous up-dos and complicated braids to the aspirants to your style throne. Bessette-Kennedy was the model of simplicity when it came to hair and make-up.
'Most of the girls at Calvin had similar long hair, but Carolyn never blew hers out,' former colleague Stormy Stokes told Sunita Kumar Nair for her book Carolyn Bessette Kennedy: A Life in Fashion. 'She taught me how to style my own: wash it, flip it up and down twice, then tie it in a top bun, and ride the subway. By the time we would get to the office, we'd take the bun down and our hair would just be ready to go.'

For shorter hair look to the ultimate British princess, Diana, who redefined her signature style with slick hair following her 1996 divorce from Prince Charles.
'She was a bit nervous about the slicked-back appearance,' Sam McKnight, Diana's hairdresser told The Telegraph in the UK. 'Like many women, she used to hide behind her hair. But she looked her best when she didn't do anything to it.'

The Brisbane designer who made Chappell Roan's outfit out of human hair
US singer-songwriter Chappell Roan is the biggest new name in pop right now, so when her stylist, Genesis Webb, asks you to make her an outfit out of human hair, you don't hesitate. But for Brisbane-born Connor O'Grady, designing the skimpy ensemble for the video for Chappell Roan's single The Subway was not as much of a challenge as getting the item from London to New York in time. Having made the bra and matching skirt in a four-day rush – scouring wigs from West End theatrical shops, dyeing the hair Roan's exact shade of auburn, and plaiting and stitching it into place – O'Grady dropped the package off for urgent delivery across the Atlantic. Three days later, it was still sitting at the warehouse, and the freelance designer and milliner begged to have it released back to him. 'I said, 'it's my sister's wedding dress'. And I think I freaked out the poor person behind the counter. I could see it in the storeroom, I was going to do a runner with it,' he says. O'Grady got the package back, booked a flight to New York, and delivered it in person to Webb at the video's Brooklyn set. Less than a month later, on August 1, the hirsute video dropped – O'Grady's showgirl-inspired piece is the one Roan is wearing as she leans on the fire escape of a New York tenement building overlooking Hudson Street. This is the latest fast-fashion moment in a frenzied 12 months for the 24-year-old recent graduate of the London School of Design.

Travis' Dougie Payne says Bonehead is ‘the heart and soul' of Oasis reunion
Travis bassist Dougie Payne is delighted that Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs is part Oasis reunion tour because is 'the heart and soul of the whole thing'. Bonehead is the rhythm guitarist for the Oasis Live '25 concerts, joining reunited brothers Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher as the only original members in the band – which also includes bassist Andy Bell, third guitarist Gem Archer and drummer Joey Waronker. Dougie believes the return of Bonehead – who quit Oasis in 1999 during the recording sessions for fourth studio album Standing On The Shoulder of Giants to spend more time with his family - is just as important to the success of the reunion as having Liam and Noel back together because he created the band before Noel even joined. In an interview with website Contact Music, he said: 'They've been dominating not only the summer but everybody's Instagram feeds, from what I've seen it sounds great. 'I'm delighted that Bonehead is back, I think that's great and gives it all a lovely feel to it. Bonehead is kind of the heart and soul of the whole thing. 'Liam is singing great, his voice sounds back to its best. It seems to be a very happy thing. It's good to have them back.' Travis supported Oasis on the Be Here Now tour back in 1997 and then toured across America with the Wonderwall hitmakers in 2000 after Bonehead and original bass player Paul 'Guigsy' McGuigan quit and were replaced by Andy and Gem in the band. Dougie, 52, admits Travis would have loved to be have been one of the support acts on the Oasis Live '25 tour but there were never any conversations before Cast and Richard Ashcroft were confirmed. He said: 'I think every other band was trying to get on that tour! But it was all set in place. The whole thing is such a massive behemoth that it's all set in place. Before they announced anything it was this is what's going to be happening. 'Fran [Healy] was texting with Noel a little while ago and it was all very friendly and they were having a bit of a laugh in the texts.' 'We did the Be Here Now tour and then we did the American tour. We toured with those guys across the States in 2000, which was when Gem and Andy had just joined the band. That was a great tour. That was a lot of fun. On the first tour we were slightly overawed, they were the biggest pop stars on the planet then and we were kind of like, 'Wow.' We were absolutely brand new, we had just released one record. It was all impressive. On the American tour we hung out properly and it was just a good laugh." Dougie has nothing but love for Liam, 52, and Noel, 58, and remembers them being so kind to him and his bandmates - singer-and-guitarist Fran Healy, guitarist Andy Dunlop and drummer Neil Primrose - when they supported Oasis. He said: "They're the funniest people, super sweet, so funny. They were so generous and so kind to us. I love those guys.' Travis will be reuniting with another old friend this weekend, Blur's Alex James. The Why Does It Always Rain On Me? hitmakers with be performing at Alex's Big Feastival music festival held at his farm in the Cotswolds and as well as playing their own set they will be doing something special with the Blur bassist on stage, too. Dougie teased: 'There's Alex's Britpop Classical and me and Fran are going to jump in for something. So I think we've got to go out and hang out in his big barn, that should be quite fun. 'We've got a little run of festivals and Big Feastival is in the middle of that run. 'Hopefully they'll be lots of music, lots of fun and hopefully some cheese and wine as well.' The Big Feastival takes place between 22 August and 24 August. The line-up also includes Nelly Furtado, Mabel, The Wombats, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Caity Baser and Artful Dodger among others.
