The Fringe Fleadh continues to bring traditional music to Wexford as Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2025 gets closer. The traditional tunes continued in Gorey Shopping Centre on Sunday, July 27 as Gorey/Ballygarrett Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (CCÉ) set up in the shopping area to get locals in the spirit for the Fleadh next week.
Wexford County Council organised the tunes to anticipate the upcoming Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2025 this August. Wexford County Council announced a series of traditional music and dance events taking place throughout the county.
Multiple events have taken place this month to celebrate the growing traditional music scene in Wexford. The Fringe Fleadh 25 programme invites locals and visitors alike to enjoy a range of free, family-friendly performances and sessions featuring talented local musicians, dancers, and cultural groups.
The members of the Gorey/Ballygarrett CCÉ took up various instruments to perform, which started from 2pm.
The events are open to all and free to attend, inviting everyone to celebrate the culture, music, and dance that make Wexford so special.

Michael Flatley quiet on Áras bid during surprise Wexford Fleadh visit and performance

Michael Flatley gave nothing away about his rumored bid for the Áras when he arrived in Wexford on Saturday for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. Dressed in blue jeans, a white T-shirt and runners, topped with a navy jacket, he posed with gardaí, fans, musicians, and locals near the Talbot Hotel after arriving just after 1pm. The Lord of the Dance is expected to announce he will enter the presidential race but remained tight-lipped when asked by reporters, simply smiling in response. Sources told the Irish Examiner last month he is considering running but has yet to make an official statement. Instead, he surprised the crowds with an impromptu musical performance on Wexford's Quayfront at the Main Gig Rig. The dancer proved he is also a skilled flute player, performing a reel as the crowd clapped along. He posed with members of the local force, including Garda Catty Burke and Sergeant Seamus Muldowney, as well as local Labour TD and former Lord Mayor George Lawlor. His sister Annie, to whom he is close, also attended to support him. Michael Flatley with his sister Anne-Marie at the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Wexford. Picture: Alison O'Reilly Mr Lawlor, PRO for the Fleadh said the famous Irish dancer has a long history with Wexford, so it was no surprise to see him there. 'His son attended an Irish school here last year and he also came to the Fleadh then too' he said. 'He has been a Comhaltas all his life since his early days learning the flute and Irish dancing in Chicago. 'He is a huge fan of Wexford, and very supportive of the town. The crowds were delighted to see him, he walked around and spoke to everyone, he didn't refuse a selfie and spoke to the young musicians. 'We were delighted to see a man of such standing and tradition attending the fleadh and he received a very warm reception, with everyone coming to say hello – he never turned anyone away. 'He went onto the gig rig and tens of thousands where there as he played the flute for them'. Scenes during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2025 in Wexford town. Picture: Gareth Chaney Michael Flatley was not the only famous face to make a surprise visit to the festival. Ed Sheeran's management made the owners of The Sky & Ground pub swear to keep his performance a secret ahead of his unannounced gig on Tuesday night. The word quickly spread that the Galway Girl singer was in the traditional pub, and dozens flocked to catch a glimpse. The festival, which began on August 3, will finish tomorrow, August 10. This is the second year the town has hosted the event. 'This has been a wonderful success for the second year in a row we have broken attendance records, and it has been so well organised. We are delighted with the success' continued Mr Lawlor. 'By Sunday evening more than 700,000 people will have attended the event before we hand it over to Belfast who will host the Fleadh for the next two years. 'Up to 150,000 were in attendance in the town on Saturday alone, and there has been a constant stream of fans all week.' Scenes during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2025 in Wexford town. Picture: Gareth Chaney On Saturday, there was no sign of the crowds easing. There was at least a 30-minute traffic delay approaching Wexford, with Park & Ride facilities set up outside the town. Most service stations within a 20km radius had closed their public toilets as crowds tried to leave cars wherever possible and walk to the event. Festivalgoers coped with soaring temperatures of 22C, wearing shorts and T-shirts, with some even brave enough to wear swimsuits while enjoying the colourful event.

Programme of events revealed for annual Lady's Island Pilgrimage in Wexford – ‘There's no place more beautiful'

Bishop Ger Nash will do the honours, celebrating mass at 3 p.m. with the Lagoon Junior Choir providing accompaniment, followed by a procession around the island. The castle has been subject to a lot of heritage conservation work of late and Fr Jim Cogley is looking forward to showing off the results to visitors, noting that Wexford County Council has invested 'considerable funding' in the local area of late. Currently in the process of being completed is a stunning mural by Boolavogue artist Monica Gahan, depicting the island on a wall of the castle courtyard. The area in front will provide a facility for those who wish to have loved ones remembered on the Island in the form of a ceramic photo plaque. Enquiries for this can be made on 087-4066977. With a huge amount of work required for pilgrimage season, Fr Jim is fulsome in his praise of the local community. 'The Parish of Lady's Island, although small in size, is blessed with a wonderful team of volunteers that make the pilgrimage possible each year,' he said. 'One team of men and women are responsible for the running of the gift Shop that has a wonderful array of items for sale and is open each day. Another large team take care of the Coffee shop where visitors are welcomed and can enjoy the delights of home baking and refreshments. This too is open daily during pilgrimage season and more volunteers are always welcome.' Fr Jim has revealed that daily services will take place at 3 p.m and 7.30 p.m. with a whole host of different musicians and speakers taking part. After the service on August 15, Fr Jim himself will speak with a focus on healing. 'We are pleased to welcome a return visit from Celine Byrne, one of Ireland's best-known singers, and world-renowned star of opera,' Fr Jim revealed. 'Celine, from Kildare, will be singing and sharing her faith journey on Sunday August 24. Her performance last year was magnificent, but many missed out because of inclement weather.' Celine has performed for three popes, US presidents and has shared a stage with legendary opera singers like Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Andrea Bocelli. While a singer with the stars her feet are firmly on the ground as she remains humble, honest about her own struggles, and a strong advocate of healing and mental health. Celine will also launch Fr Cogley's latest two books In the Wood You Believe series, Vol 12 When I befriended my Anger and Vol 13 A World of Symbols. These will also be available to order on Mass the following Sunday, September 7, will be a Diocesan celebration of the Jubilee Year of Hope. At 3 p.m. the All Ireland Peace Choir will perform and afterwards Bishop Nash will dedicate the Wall of Remembrance. The Closing Mass and Candlelight Procession will take place on Monday September 8, at 7 p.m. Among the other changes to this year's programme are the blessing with holy oil which will take place each Wednesday and Friday after 3 p.m. mass; rosary before mass at 7 p.m. on Mondays; prayer around the cross on Fridays after 7.30 p.m. mass. A listening service will also be available with trained personnel after 3 p.m. masses. 'When the weather is smiling and even when its not, there is no place more beautiful than Lady's Island to visit,' Fr Jim says. 'Come and enjoy yourself and be part of a long tradition that has remained unbroken, apart from Cromwell and Covid, for the past 1400 years.'

Ed Sheeran performs surprise gig at Wexford pub

ED SHEERAN performed a surprise show in Wexford Town on Tuesday night at the Sky & The Ground pub, delivering an intimate set during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2025. As Ireland's largest traditional music festival continued to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors, Sheeran's appearance brought part of South Main Street to a standstill. Rumours had swirled earlier in the week about a possible Sheeran appearance, especially after speculation he would open the Fleadh on Sunday fell flat. Yet by late afternoon Tuesday, the buzz returned, and hopeful fans began to gather in droves outside the well-known Wexford venue. The crowd grew so large that gardaí were forced to restrict access to the street for public safety. Inside the pub, Sheeran joined a stellar line-up of Irish talent, including trad supergroup BIIRD, folk band Amble, celebrated fusion group Beoga, and singer Aaron Rowe. The packed pub erupted as Sheeran launched into a short but memorable set that included hits like Castle On The Hill, Shape of You, and Nancy Mulligan. 'I'm honoured to be here,' Sheeran told the fans inside the pub. 'Thanks for coming down. We're going to play a few songs that hopefully you know. If you don't, it's going to be awkward for me and for you.' Sheeran collaborated with BIIRD on a moving rendition of Wild Mountain Thyme and later joined Amble and BIIRD for an emotional performance of Raglan Road. Though many outside the venue were initially disappointed not to gain entry, Sheeran made sure they didn't miss out. In a throwback to his early days busking on the streets of Galway and London, he climbed atop a box in the pub's rear courtyard and delivered an unplugged acoustic version of his ballad Perfect. The singer's Irish connection runs deep, his paternal grandmother hailed from Gorey, and recently Sheeran has publicly embraced his cultural roots, even saying he now identifies as culturally Irish. His affection for Wexford is well known, having previously donned a county jersey at a sold-out Croke Park show 'to keep the family happy'. Before heading off, Sheeran even took time to enjoy a quiet pint at Mernagh's of Oylegate, where he posed for photos with staff. His appearance comes in the midst of his ongoing Mathematics European tour, and his spontaneous stop at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann only added to the festival's atmosphere. With over 750,000 people expected to visit the town throughout the week, Sheeran's visit will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the event's standout moments. Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann continues in Wexford until Sunday. See More: Co. Wexford, Ed Sheeran, Fleadh Cheoil
