Daniel Sturridge urges goal-shy Rsmus Hojlund to be 'more selfish' and claims 'centre-backs have had more shots' than the struggling Man United striker

Daily Mail27-04-2025

Daniel Sturridge has urged goal-shy Rasmus Hojlund to be more selfish in order to recover from his slump at Manchester United.
The Norwegian has endured a miserable campaign at Old Traffords, scoring only three times in 28 appearances in his second season since a £72million transfer from Atalanta.
Hojlund has not been aided by the woeful form of the Red Devils, who sit 14th in the table and on are course to record their worst-ever Premier League campaign.
Sturridge, who enjoyed spells in the top flight with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea, believes that the 22-year-old must do more to have more attempts in goal. And he urged the striker to be more selfish to improve his form.
'Centre-back have had more shots,' said Sturridge on Sky Sports. 'I have had periods where I have had one shot coming off the pitch and it is down to me, my run selection.
'It is also communicating with team-mates this is what I want from you. The one thing he has to improve on for me is being a little bit more selfish, you have to pick your spots.
'There's something in there, he is not a bad player, he has talent and maybe the setup he is in now isn't allowing him to flourish.'
Hojlund's run has worried pundits and led to speculation that the Red Devils will seek to move on from him in the summer. After his poor showing in last weekend's 1-0 defeat by Wolves, when he was substituted after 70 minutes, Premier League legend Alan Shearer branded Hojlund a 'damaged player' and said he believes he is suffering from a 'crisis of confidence'.
Despite his shortcomings this term, Hojlund has retained his place as United's first-choice striker for the majority of the campaign under Ruben Amorim ahead of Joshua Zirkzee and teenage wonderkid Chido Obi-Martin.
But the club are reported to be in the market for a striker during the upcoming window. In recent weeks, Wolves star Matheus Cunha has emerged as a likely summer recruit.
Mail Sport revealed last week that Man United are edging closer to an agreement with the Brazilian.

Viktor Gyokeres is 'furious with Sporting Lisbon for blocking his move to Arsenal' as transfer saga turns ugly

Viktor Gyokeres is reportedly fuming with Sporting Lisbon for holding up his departure from the club this summer. The Swedish striker is one of the most in-demand strikers in Europe after flourishing in Portugal over the past two seasons, and had expected to get a transfer to the Premier League. Gyokeres prefers a move to Arsenal over Manchester United, but his price-tag has become a major stumbling block for any deal. It is understood that Gyokeres believes he reached a gentleman's agreement with Sporting last summer that would see the club accept a fee in the region of €70m (£60m) including add-ons at the end of the season. However, Sporting are now trying to hold out for a significantly higher fee - with Gyokeres having a €100m (£84m) release clause in his contract, and club president Frederico Varandas has accused Gyokeres' team of trying to 'blackmail' the Portuguese giants. Gyokeres has reportedly threatened to go on strike after vowing to 'speak at the right time', and, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, he is 'very upset' with Sporting's current stance and has made his feelings clear to the club's hierarchy. Their report claims five clubs are interested in signing Gyokeres, with Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Saudi Arabian team Al-Ahli joining Arsenal and United in monitoring the 27-year-old's situation. Gyokeres would also welcome interest from Manchester City and Liverpool, while he is open to a move to Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG or Bayern Munich. But Sporting are adamant that they won't let their star striker leave for a fee that falls below their asking price. Varandas claimed last week that Sporting will not demand £84m for Gyokeres, but also stated that allowing the forward to depart for £60m is also off the table as a war of words broke out. 'Sporting will not demand the release clause, but they should know me better by now,' Varandas said. 'Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me. 'I can guarantee one thing: Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m + €10m. He won't leave because I never allowed it, and the game his agent is playing will only make the situation worse.' Varandas has denied a gentleman's agreement was ever in place as the transfer saga continues to turn ugly. Gyokeres may now be concerned that he could miss out on a move to Arsenal, with the Gunners also closely tracking several other options to bolster their frontline. The north London club have shown interest in RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, while Alexander Isak, Julian Alvarez and Ollie Watkins are also believed to be on their radar as potential alternatives. But Gyokeres could be the standout candidate to fill the No 9 role after scoring 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting. His goals secured a domestic double for the club last term, and Arsenal may view him as the missing piece of the jigsaw as they look to end their trophy drought under Mikel Arteta next season.

Arsenal told to forget Sesko and Gyokeres and strike £50m Liverpool deal

Arsenal are being urged to sign a player who Liverpool may be willing to sell for £50million, and has been backed to score them plenty of goals despite a disappointing season Arsenal have been urged to sign Darwin Nunez following reports Liverpool could be willing to sell the striker for £50million. The 25-year-old is expected to leave Anfield in the next few months after a disappointing return in front of goal for the newly-crowned Premier League champions this season. The Uruguay international is known to have suitors in the Middle East, with Al-Nassr having a £60m bid for the frontman rejected back in January. The former Benfica man has also attracted interest from teams in Italy, with AC Milan and Napoli both said to be keen on a deal. ‌ Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is now being encouraged to consider a move for Nunez after finishing just behind the Reds in second this term. Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has made the suggestion after boldly claiming he could bag the Gunners 25 goals next season. ‌ Such a tally would require a marked improvement from Nunez, who only scored seven times across all competitions in his most recent campaign. However, the former Wolves and Wrexham manager said he believed Arsenal would be lucky to have him after describing their current transfer targets as "gambles". RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres are Arsenal's reported prime targets, though the former is understood to be the club's favoured direction. 22-year-old striker Sesko scored 21 times last season while Gyokeres netted an incredible 54 goals from 52 matches. Speaking on talkSPORT, Saunders said: "Is there any fan out there that would be disappointed if their club was linked with Nunez? He's not got enough goals for Liverpool, but I think we all look at him with the same eyes. "I wouldn't be surprised if he went to Arsenal and scored 25 goals. The people they've got lined up, they're all gambles. At least he's played in the Premier League for three or four years, and you know what you're going to get. "He works his socks off, even if he doesn't score, so he's not a passenger. That's why the Liverpool fans like him." ‌ He added: "He's not hopeless and what surprises you about him is that he's got every finish in his locker. He can go around the keeper, he can shoot from range and he can score headers, but he does seem to find a way of missing sometimes." Liverpool are looking to sign a new striker this summer, with a move for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike on the cards. With a club-record £116m deal for Florian Wirtz also in the works, it could lead to several outgoings to fund the new arrivals. Nunez is looking for a new challenge after starting just eight Premier League games under Arne Slot this season. He earned praise from his manager for his positive attitude in spite of the lack of minutes. ‌ Discussing Nunez's situation at the moment, Slot said: "I don't know exactly what is going to happen. One of the main strengths we had this season is that everybody accepted his role. "And his role sometimes could be to start every single game, hardly be taken off, sometimes be taken off. It could be sometimes not starting every single game, sometimes not playing hardly [any] minutes." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. I won Premier League title but Rangers was my biggest ever club – it would be same for Conor Coady

The England international is a top target for Russell Martin and he's been urged to make the most of the chance to play in Glasgow Conor Coady has suffered the blues in his last couple of moves but the England defender has been told signing for Rangers would be the biggest move of his career. The Leicester City centre back has held talks with Ibrox chiefs over a potential summer move. ‌ Several clubs in England are also invested in the 32-year-old – who was a £7.5m signing from Wolves and who also spent a loan spell at Everton. ‌ Coady is currently on media duties for the Under 21 Euros but Rangers are leading the race and former Light Blues hero Colin Hendry insisted signing up for Russell Martin's Ibrox revolution would be massive. Hendry – speaking to Coin Poker – said: 'I think that depends on what he's looking at this point in his career. "When I moved to Rangers, being Scottish, it was a huge move for me. One of my ambitions was to play for Rangers and win titles, play Champions League football, and I did that. 'I actually fulfilled that dream of mine in my career, went back, got involved and won the Treble. 'For Conor, it's a bit different because he's an English lad, 32 now, and has had a good career in the Premier League with the likes of Wolves. "His last couple of moves in blue haven't worked out as well as he probably would have liked (Everton and Leicester), so I hope this one will be different for him if he does end up at Ibrox. ‌ 'What I would say is this – Rangers are a giant of a club. If he signs, Coady will be playing for the biggest club that he has ever played for in his career and there is a brilliant challenge waiting for him. 'When I went to Rangers, it was the biggest club I played for, even though I was at Man City, won the Premier League with Blackburn. It's big. It's not going to be any different for Conor Cody either if he joins. 'That would be a big move for him, an attractive move. If the finances are correct, and if he wants it, then it's a move that has the potential to suit all parties.' ‌ Hendry has been keeping tabs on his old club and he's predicting a bright future for Gers under Martin – because the new boss knows exactly the demands. The Scotland legend said: 'He played for Rangers so it shouldn't be that much of a culture shock for him. He knows the crowd. ‌ 'He knows the passion of the fanbase up there, so there can be no doubts about his knowledge of knowing exactly what's required managing Rangers Football Club. 'This is the thing that all Rangers managers struggle with, when you're the manager of Rangers, there's only one team to beat and there's only winning and losing. 'You either beat Celtic and become the champions or you finish second and it means nothing. That's the reality of Rangers. ‌ 'Rangers have appointed former players before, and I think that helps, because it is a unique club in that sense. I don't think people who aren't in and around Glasgow or Scotland understand just how big Rangers are. 'Giovanni Van Bronckhorst went back there, did alright. Russell is a similar appointment. He's a younger coach as well. 'Russell seems to have always been on the up in terms of his managerial career. He's gone from club to club, climbing the ladder. 'Rangers is a big job. It's a two horse race in Scotland. It's been like that since the 80s really. Aberdeen had a bit of strength and Dundee United, but Scottish football is all about the two Glasgow giants. 'There can only be one winner. Rangers will not recognise finishing runner-up to Celtic as success. It's a tough old league. It really is. And as far as the Old Firm, it's still the biggest game in the UK in my opinion.'
