Pep Guardiola hails Man City after impressive win over Juventus

Pep Guardiola hailed a stunning performance after Manchester City thrashed Juventus 5-2 to top their group at the Club World Cup.
Erling Haaland scored his 300th career goal and Rodri played 66 minutes on his first start since September as City moved through the gears at Orlando's Camping World Stadium on Thursday.
City defied intense heat and a later torrential downpour to sweep aside a Juventus team that beat them 2-0 in the Champions League last season.

Guardiola's team looked more like the all-conquering outfit they have been for much of the Spaniard's reign rather than the ponderous side that laboured through much of the 2024-25 campaign.
The statement victory ensured they won Group G with a 100 per cent record and theoretically secured a more favourable route through a tournament they must now be among the favourites to win.
City manager Guardiola said: 'I liked the way we did it. It has been a long time since we had a performance like this on and off the ball. The players were committed and we are happy to beat a top side.
'This is just one game but I think the players felt again what it was like to be a good team. It's the first time we've performed the way we can.
'We won the last two but we adjusted a few things. I'm really pleased because the players realise what we have to do to get back to what we were in the last decade.
'The belief always comes from your performances, not your past.'
The loss of Rodri with a serious knee injury for the majority of last season was one of the key reasons for their failure to match the standards of the past.
After winning the Premier League for the previous four years, City failed to mount a strong title defence and exited the Champions League before the last 16.
His appearance in Orlando represented a notable step up in his comeback after three substitute outings.
Guardiola said: 'Sooner or later Rodri had to start. I said, 'OK, 45 minutes' but at half-time he said he wanted five to 10 minutes more. The game was under control.
'In the last few games we have conceded a lot of transitions but it didn't happen this time. Everyone knows how important Rodri is. He is one of the best players in the world.'
City's early opener from Jeremy Doku was cancelled out by Teun Koopmeiners after an Ederson error but a Pierre Kalulu own goal restored the English side's lead.
Haaland, Phil Foden and Savinho all struck in the second half as City made victory certain before a Dusan Vlahovic consolation.
Away from the tournament, City midfielder Jack Grealish has not travelled to the United States.
Guardiola had little to say on reports linking the England international with Bayern Munich.
He said: 'I wish him the best but I don't know what is going to happen.'.

Inzaghi proud as Al-Hilal join 'the best' in Club World Cup knockout stage

June 26 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal became the only Asian side to reach the Club World Cup's knockout stages with a 2-0 win over Pachuca on Thursday, finishing their Group H campaign unbeaten and setting up a round-of-16 meeting with Manchester City. Al-Hilal showed they could compete with the best teams in the world when they held Real Madrid and Red Bull Salzburg to draws in their first two games under new coach Simone Inzaghi. They have conceded just one goal in their three matches, sharing the best defensive record of the group stage with Paris St Germain and Monterrey. Al-Hilal, majority owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, have signed a string of world-class players over the last two years including Neymar, Malcom, Ruben Neves, Marcos Leonardo and Aleksandar Mitrovic. Although Neymar has left the club and Mitrovic remains sidelined with a calf injury, the depth of the squad has allowed Al-Hilal to weather the pressure of the big stage. Al-Hilal coach Simone Inzaghi: "Our goal was to achieve (being in) the group of the best teams in the world. "It was not an easy task, but the team was well united. It fought during the three games for a great objective ... we were not coming here just to have fun, we were coming here to play a World Cup and we wanted to reach this stage. "Now we'll have to play against Manchester City ... it's one of the greatest teams in the world. These are the games where you can improve and you can mature as a team, so I'm very proud."

A simply outstanding display! 🩵 🦓 2-5 🩵 #FIFACWC — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 26, 2025 Erling Haaland scored his 300th career goal as Manchester City defied sweltering heat and a torrential downpour in Orlando to thump Juventus. City were pegged back after Jeremy Doku's early opener when Ederson gifted a goal to Teun Koopmeiners but their lead was restored when Pierre Kalulu turned into his own net at the Camping World Stadium. Haaland, reaching a notable landmark in senior football for club and country, came off the bench to bag the third and Phil Foden and Savinho made victory certain before Dusan Vlahovic's consolation. Let's make history together. 🟡🔵 — Cristiano Ronaldo (@Cristiano) June 26, 2025 Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a new two-year deal at Al Nassr. The deal ties Ronaldo, whose contract was due to expire at the end of June, to the Saudi Pro League team beyond his 42nd birthday. Ronaldo wrote on X: 'A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together.' Ronaldo joined Al Nassr in December 2022 as a free agent after leaving Manchester United following a controversial interview in which he criticised the Premier League club. Liverpool have completed the £40million signing of Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez on a five-year contract. The 21-year-old is the club's third arrival this summer, following Jeremie Frimpong and club-record transfer Florian Wirtz. And with Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili joining next month in a deal done 12 months ago there will be more than £200million of new talent present when pre-season training starts in a fortnight. Kerkez said: 'I'm really happy. It's a real honour for me, a privilege to come to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, (the) biggest club in England. I'm just really, really happy and excited.' Wrexham will start their 2025-26 Sky Bet Championship campaign with a mouth-watering trip to Southampton on Saturday, August 9. The Welsh club, co-owned by Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia co-creator Rob McElhenney, are back in the second tier for the first time in 43 years after winning three consecutive promotions. Wrexham met Eastleigh on the opening day of the Vanarama National League season in August 2022, but are now set to play grander Hampshire opposition three years on. St Mary's will be the venue for Wrexham's Championship bow as Will Still takes charge of relegated Southampton for the first time in a 12.30pm kick-off. City will be keeping a close eye on the final round of Group H fixtures as they will play the runners-up. Real Madrid currently sit top of the pile but play second-placed Red Bull Salzburg in Philadelphia. England Under-21s, meanwhile, will be gearing up for Saturday's European Championship final against Germany in Bratislava as Lee Carsley's side look to retain their continental crown.

England missed a trick with Lee Carsley - they'd be daft to ignore him again

Having got a couple of deeply underwhelming performances out of the way in early June, Thomas Tuchel's summer is not likely to be overly busy. Apparently, he will be at the Club World Cup - he might already be there - to assess conditions in the United States ahead of next summer's serious tournament. It's hot, Thomas. But now England's under-21 squad have completed the splendid achievement of making the final of the Euros, Tuchel will, hopefully, be in Bratislava to see the showdown with Germany. If nothing else, for a show of support. Considering he is a gun hired for 18 months, development teams are of limited concern to Tuchel. One or two of the under-21 party in the final will have a chance of making it to World Cup 2026 - Tino Livramento is probably the prime candidate. But the bulk of Tuchel's squad for next summer is probably already settled. Get your suitcase packed, Jordan Henderson. But the work that is being done - and has been done - by Lee Carsley has been invaluable to the long-term future of the English national team. In the shape of Germany, there is one more formidable final barrier for the under-21s to hurdle but a second successive major tournament triumph would be a remarkable achievement. And it would be testament not only to Carsley's tactical acumen and footballing brain, but to his ability to foster a club culture in a national team. Almost as eye-catching as the performance that produced a 3-1 quarter-final win over Spain last Saturday was the way Carsley's players stood up for each other in the melee at the end of the contest. It was all-for-one and one-for-all stuff. 'There are better ways to build camaraderie,' smiled Carsley, but, deep down, he must have been proud. It is a cliche, but this is another England under-21 vintage that looks like a band of brothers. 'They are a really together group,' Carsley said. 'But I have been with together groups that have gone home quite early.' In other words, camaraderie is great but you need a lot, lot more than that to win a tournament. At under-21 level especially, you need to adapt to the inevitable churn of personnel. A little while ago, you might have expected the likes of Liam Delap, Jobe Bellingham, Adam Wharton and Taylor Harwood-Bellis to play key roles in the Euros but, for one reason or another, all are absent. They might not have been massively convincing in the group stages - winning one, losing one and drawing one - but Carsley has adapted and to win a coaching battle against a Spanish counterpart and then a Dutch counterpart is another feather in his cap. Carsley, of course, was given a six-game spell as interim senior manager and the only blot on his attractive copybook was a maverick team selection that led to a Nations League home defeat by Greece. Regardless of that hiccup, the Football Association, it seems, were always going to go down the Tuchel route. For the big job, they were always going to ignore a succession from within, a man proven to know what it takes to win an international tournament, a coach who players clearly love playing for. When Tuchel disappears back into lucrative club management in just over a year's time, the FA would be daft to ignore him again. Sky has slashed the price of its bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more. Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games next season, an increase of up to 100 more.
