SIBU (June 14): Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian cautioned political parties in the state against adopting the divisive political culture commonly seen in the Peninsula.
The Deputy Premier said such practices could undermine social harmony and destabilise the political environment Sarawak has long enjoyed.
'It is crucial that Sarawak continues to preserve the political stability and harmony we have today, as it greatly benefits both the people and the government's development efforts,' he said during the SUPP Bawang Assan branch's 'Ngiling Bidai' and party's 66th anniversary celebration here today.
He said Sarawak's political stability was essential for the long-term success of development initiatives.
'Our Premier has a vision for Sarawak to become the most developed state in Malaysia. That vision requires stability and unity to be realised. We must avoid the 'termites' that can weaken our foundation. Let us remain united and work together to realise this vision for the sake of future generations.'
Dr Sim reaffirmed SUPP's commitment to multi-racial representation and said the party remains resilient despite the ups and downs over its 66-year history.
He also reiterated SUPP's support for the state's development agenda, working closely with other component parties to maintain political stability.
Touching on Bawang Assan, Dr Sim noted that the area has long lagged behind in terms of development and now needs fresh leadership to drive progress.
'In SUPP, we are fortunate to have Councillor Kevin Lau – a promising young leader we believe can help steer Bawang Assan toward greater development.
'For instance, Kevin proposed the construction of an iconic bridge to link the western banks of Sibu to the town centre; a proposal which has been approved by the Premier,' he said.
Also present at the event were Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng, Senator Robert Lau, Political Secretary to the Premier William Anut, SUPP Bawang Assan branch chairman Kevin Lau and organising chairman Johnny Ganing. divisive political culture Dr Sim Kui Hian Peninsula politics SUPP

Teachers to get an upgrade

KUALA LUMPUR: A new initiative that will see nearly 400,000 educators trained in artificial intelligence (AI) applications has been announced as part of a move to modernise Malaysia's teaching force. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said the programme, titled 'AI for Educators', will be implemented in collaboration with the Education Ministry. Involving 395,000 educators, the programme aims not only to equip teachers with technical AI skills but also to deepen their understanding of ethical considerations in using such technologies in the classroom. 'Our teachers are the frontliners in human capital development. 'They must be empowered with the latest knowledge and tools to prepare our people for the challenges of the AI era. 'This reflects not only the commitment of the Human Resources Ministry but also the wider commitment of the Madani government to ensuring our educators lead the way,' he said in his speech at the National Training Week (NTW) 2025 summit in Bukit Jalil here yesterday. Sim also revealed that this year's NTW had surpassed all expectations with over two million Malaysians participating in the free training sessions, double the initial target of one million. 'This is the third year we are organising the NTW and it has grown in scale and impact. 'Last year, we reached around 300,000 participants. This year, we've gone beyond our target even during the launch week,' he added. According to Sim, over 71,000 free training sessions were offered across the country, with more than 40% of them focused on Industry 4.0-related skills, including digital tools, automation and emerging technologies. He also extended an invitation to citizens from across Asean, saying that this year's NTW was open not just to Malaysians but also to participants from neighbouring countries, a move in line with Malaysia's role as Asean Chair this year. 'This is our commitment to building regional human capital and strengthening cooperation in a rapidly evolving economic landscape,' he said.

NTW 2025 records over two million participants

KUALA LUMPUR — The 2025 National Training Week (NTW), held to promote greater participation in skills training among Malaysians, has recorded over two million participants, exceeding its initial one million target. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong said the third edition of NTW offered more than 71,000 free courses nationwide, conducted physically, online and in hybrid formats, from today until June 21. 'More than 41 per cent of the courses are related to Industry 4.0. To improve the people's skills in this area, the Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA) collaborated with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to implement the AI-4-Educators programme from April 7 to June 12. 'This is to train nearly 400,000 educators in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for teaching techniques, skills and related issues such as ethics, so that frontliners in our human capital development sector are equipped with the knowledge and skills to face the challenges of the AI era,' he said when speaking at the NTW ceremony at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium here today. The AI-4-Educators programme, comprising five self-training modules covering the use of AI in teaching, accessibility and ethics, has been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records for recording the largest participation of educators in an AI training programme. Sim said the government had allocated about RM10 billion for skills development, of which 30 per cent came from levies imposed on private companies to train their employees. 'KESUMA is aware that with such a large financial allocation, the strategy must be aligned with current needs so that the people can benefit from it. Therefore, last year we introduced the MyMahir portal, which helps not only government agencies and private companies but also individuals to make informed decisions on skills development plans based on economic criteria. 'In this first year, KESUMA found that our trainees earned an average salary that was 12 per cent higher than the general market average. This programme will be expanded more aggressively so that more workers benefit from the MADANI Government's investment in skills development,' he said. Meanwhile, the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), in a statement, said that among the popular courses during NTW 2025 were Neurodiversity Virtual Training, Cyber Security Threat Management (CSTM), ChatGPT Malaysia Community: Malaysia's Premier AI Learning Platform, Drone Flying Skills for New Pilots, Tax Planning for Individuals 2025, and Generative AI For Everyone. All activities implemented under NTW 2025 were based on five primary thrusts, namely Life Skills, Future Skills, Creativity and Innovation, Financial Literacy, and Sustainable Development. — BERNAMA
