Marcus Freeman takes strong stance on Notre Dame football not joining a conference
The post Marcus Freeman takes strong stance on Notre Dame football not joining a conference appeared first on ClutchPoints.
The Notre Dame football program is a unique one for a lot of reasons. It is one of the most storied programs in college football, and there aren't a lot of others that have experienced the success that the Fighting Irish have seen. The big difference between Notre Dame and the other elite programs in college football is that the Fighting Irish aren't in a conference. They are an independent, but as the landscape of the sport continues to change, so could Notre Dame's conference stance.

Right now, the Notre Dame football team wants to stay independent. If it wanted to join a conference, it would. If the Fighting Irish join a conference, they would also lose one of their most unique characteristics.
'It's what this football program was built from,' Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said during an episode of The Joel Klatt Show. 'As long as we can, we will [retain independence]. I have a lot of confidence in our administration and Pete Bevacqua, or AD, that he'll always keep us in a position to be successful. So, as long as we can keep that Independence, we will.'
Seeing how the last few years have gone, Marcus Freeman knows that Notre Dame has to be ready to adapt at any second. If you aren't willing to change in this era, you will get left behind.
'But, if there ever comes a time that we are at a disadvantage because we aren't in a conference, I'm sure he'll make the decision,' Freeman added. 'Along with our president, to say, 'Alright, we're gonna join one of these conferences, and position ourselves to not be negatively impacted by being Independent.''

With the way that the College Football Playoff is trending, not being in a conference could end up hurting the Fighting Irish. Conference champions get special treatment like automatic bids, and teams in the SEC and the Big Ten seem to get looked at in a different light compared to teams in other conferences.
'I think if you talk about being at a disadvantage to make the postseason,' Freeman continued. 'Because you're not in the Playoff. Or, if there comes a time when teams won't schedule you because the Big Ten or the SEC are saying we're gonna play nine games and we'll play a crossover game and who cares about Notre Dame? Well, then I think there's going to be a point where we're forced to join a conference. But until that point happens, which it doesn't look likely, we're going to stay Independent as long as we can.'
Freeman has paid attention to what has gone down, and he has a good idea of where the sport is headed. He knows that Notre Dame might have to make this big change eventually.
'I can see it trending that way,' he said. 'I don't know when that time will come. When you start adding in TV money, you start adding in scheduling, there's a lot of money involved with college football. There might come a time where there might be an outside entity that takes college football away from the NCAA. I don't know, right? The future is uncertain,' Freeman said. 'But I could see a college football system where everybody's Independent and somebody else is — very similar to the NFL — somebody else is scheduling the games, when you play each other. Then, all of a sudden, it's not based off TV deals with your conference anymore. It'll be based off regional location and things like that.'

If the Notre Dame football team does join a conference, the Big Ten would make a lot of sense. The Fighting Irish are located in the heart of Big Ten country, and Notre Dame has two rivals already in the conference in USC and Michigan. It's a move that would make sense.

Liv Morgan injury update: WWE Women's Tag Team Champion suffers shoulder injury
A WWE champion appears to have suffered a serious injury. Liv Morgan — one half of the Women's Tag Team Champions — suffered a legitimate injury during Monday Night Raw on June 16, and she could possibly be sidelined in the future. Advertisement Morgan faced Kairi Sane in a singles match at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Early in the contest, Morgan approached Sane when dropped to her knees for a single-leg takedown. Morgan went face first on the mat as did her right shoulder. Morgan immediately yelled in pain and rolled out of the ring as the referee blocked Sane from performing any other move. Morgan went down and held her shoulder as medical personnel came to check on her. The match was eventually called off as Morgan was escorted out of the arena. Sane was declared winner by forfeit. What injury did Liv Morgan suffer? WWE commentator Michael Cole said Morgan suffered a dislocated shoulder. While it's unknown how it could affect a wrestler, it typically is an injury that can sideline athletes for months. Advertisement What determines the timeline of return depends on the severity of the injury and if surgery happens. Without surgery, the Mayo Clinic says, the shoulder would improve "over a few weeks," but if surgery is performed, full recovery can take five to six months. Regardless, it looks to be a tough break for one of the workhorses in the women's division. Morgan is currently a record four-time WWE Women's Tag Team Champion alongside Raquel Rodriguez. The duo won the titles at Raw After WrestleMania on April 21 and they lost them to Lyra Valkyria and Becky Lynch one day earlier at WrestleMania 41. Recently, it had been hinted Morgan would have a storyline with current Women's World Champion Iyo Sky and WWE Hall of Famer Nikki Bella, who returned to programming on June 9. The two-time Women's World Champion has suffered shoulder injuries before. In 2023, she missed six months of action after she dislocated her shoulder in a match with Rhea Ripley. It was revealed to be a labrum tear and she required surgery. Advertisement The biggest stories, every morning. Insider Expects Nick Chubb to Return to Browns for One Reason
Insider Expects Nick Chubb to Return to Browns for One Reason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After seven seasons in Cleveland, former Browns running back Nick Chubb headed south in free agency to join the Houston Texans. Advertisement Chubb is a four-time Pro Bowler and a Second-Team All-Pro and has rushed for a franchise third-best 6,843 yards over his time in Cleveland. But the former second-round draft pick dealt with injuries over the past two seasons and played in a total of just 10 games. While Chubb was certainly a fan-favorite during his time with the Browns, it's hard to say he was much more. He holds the third-highest career rushing total in franchise history. And while it's not Pro Football Hall of Fame worthy, it might be Browns Ring of Honor worthy. At least insider Mary Kay Cabot with thinks so, and she thinks someday Chubb will return to the Browns for that purpose. Advertisement 'There's definitely a chance the Browns will work something out with Nick Chubb down the road even if he signs just to retire as a Brown," Cabot wrote. "I absolutely think this should and will happen. Based on Chubb's heartfelt thank you to Browns fans, I truly believe he'll be open to it and will want it as much as the Browns and their fans do. He deserves a chance to play, and now he has that in Houston. "But it can't end this way. He needs to retire as a Brown when he's ready, and then go into their Ring of Honor.' But Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan disagrees. 'I don't think he's going to get his jersey retired, nor should he," Ruiter said. "They are going to put him in the Ring of Honor. The Haslams made the announcement this week when they were thanking Nick Chubb. ... And I have to be honest with you: I wouldn't put him in the Ring of Honor. For me, the Ring of Honor is for Hall of Famers. For Browns players who are Hall of Famers. Again, as much as I love Nick Chubb." Advertisement Is Chubb a Hall of Famer? No. Is he worthy of the Browns' Ring of Honor? That depends on who you ask. Candace Parker Dismisses Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese Rivalry: "It's Like Comparing Apples And Oranges"
Candace Parker Dismisses Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese Rivalry: "It's Like Comparing Apples And Oranges" originally appeared on Fadeaway World. WNBA icon Candace Parker appeared on the latest episode of the Spolitics podcast, where she shared her thoughts about the Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese rivalry. Parker made it clear she isn't a fan of Clark and Reese being compared to each other. Advertisement "I just think that it's like comparing apples and oranges," Parker said. "Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, it's like, what are we doing? They like doing the Magic [Johnson] and [Larry] Bird comparison. Well, they played similar positions. Bird wasn't a point guard, but he played the guard position. They at least kind of matched up. This? What are we doing? I'm not falling into that. I'm not into the comparison. "I think there are a number of things that Angel can improve on, will improve on in the situation she's in," Parker continued. "And I think Caitlin Clark has done that, even in her first year, in terms of being able to be that floor general... I think the thing about Caitlin, yes, she can shoot from the logo, but she makes her team better." Parker makes some good points here. A guard like Clark and a forward like Reese aren't really matching up against each other, but the main focus from the outside when it came to this rivalry wasn't about the play on the court. Race was a big part of it, and things kicked off towards the end of the 2023 national title game, when Reese taunted Clark as LSU beat Iowa. The teams would meet again in the Elite Eight the following year, but the tables had turned by then. Clark and Iowa beat LSU, only to lose in the national title game again, this time to South Carolina. Advertisement Failing to win the national title certainly didn't lead to Clark's stock falling. The Indiana Fever would select her with the first pick of the 2024 WNBA, while Reese went seventh to the Chicago Sky. The rivalry would be a big talking point throughout their rookie season. In their first-ever meeting in the WNBA, Reese came under fire for clapping after her teammate cheap-shotted Clark. That ensured that the media and fans would keep talking about these two. They were the leading candidates for the Rookie of the Year award as well, which only brought more attention to the rivalry. Clark would end up winning ROY, and she has had a much better sophomore season than Reese, too. Clark averaged 19.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 9.3 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game for the Fever before going down with a quad strain. Reese, meanwhile, has put up 9.1 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game for the Sky. Candace Parker On Caitlin Clark Being "Targeted" During Her Rookie Season Clark being targeted by her opponents was another big storyline during her rookie season. The notion was that they were jealous of her, but Parker stated that's always been the case in the WNBA when the next big thing comes in. Advertisement 'When you are a generational talent, and I say that in Diana [Taurasi], Maya [Moore], myself, Breanna Stewart, Caitlin Clark, A'ja Wilson, you're gonna experience the physicality," Parker stated. "The scouting report is to stop you, and a lot of it is to be physical. Do you take a couple extra licks from people? Yeah. Was I the rookie coming in and got different shots taken at me or hard fouls? Oh yeah.' To Clark's credit, she never made a big deal of the increased physicality. She played it down every single time it was brought up, and you really admire how this 23-year-old has carried herself during her time in the WNBA.
