Trump extends US-China trade truce for another 90 days
The administration is increasingly seeking to fold non-tariff-related trade disputes into trade negotiations. Trump earlier on Monday defended a deal he struck with chip-makers Nvidia and AMD that allows them to continue to sell certain chips to China despite concerns over national security, in exchange for the companies giving the U.S. government a portion of the revenue from the sales.
Trump also did not follow through last week on a threat to impose secondary tariffs of up to 100 percent on China because of its continued purchases of Russian oil, even though he punished India for the same thing by doubling U.S. tariffs to 50 percent.
Top officials from the two countries met in Stockholm late last month, the third in a series of meetings between Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Chinese negotiators led by Vice Premier He Lifeng.
'This action is necessary to facilitate ongoing and productive discussion with China about remedying trade imbalances, unfair trade practices, expanding market access for American exports, and aligning with the United States on national security and economic matters,' the White House said in a fact sheet.
Those talks — in Geneva in May and London in June — have focused on stabilizing the trade relationship after tit-for-tat tariff increases, easing Beijing's blockade on critical minerals exports and eliminating U.S. curbs on sales of ethane to Chinese manufacturers.
With existing duties remaining in place, the U.S. agreed in May to temporarily lower tariffs on Chinese imports from 145 percent to 30 percent, while China dropped levies on U.S. goods from 125 percent to 10 percent.
Trade between the countries has been strained over the past year, as Trump has targeted Chinese goods in his effort to upend the global economy. That has put businesses that are heavily reliant on Chinese goods — like the toy industry and the apparel industry — in a difficult situation as they try to navigate changing tariff levels.
The 90-day pause will supply those businesses with a sense of certainty, helping with inventory through the Christmas season — even if it comes at a higher cost.
Jeff Moon, a former assistant USTR for China, said Trump appears to be hoping to reach a deal with China in time for a regional summit in South Korea in late October.
'You can see the choreography of what's happening,' Moon said Friday during a discussion hosted by the Washington International Trade Association, referring to a series of 'confidence-building steps' between the two countries in recent months.

Nvidia's AI Expansion Could Push Revenue To $300 Billion By 2026, Analyst Says
Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) is set to beat Wall Street's expectations once again, driven by surging demand for AI and its new Blackwell architecture. With a strong revenue forecast of $48 billion for the second quarter and expectations for continued growth through 2026, the company's Data Center segment remains the primary growth engine, positioning Nvidia for sustained leadership in AI infrastructure. Cantor Fitzgerald analyst C.J. Muse has upped his price forecast for Nvidia to $240, citing the company's Blackwell-driven Data Center expansion and the rapid acceleration of AI maintains his Overweight rating on the stock, noting that Nvidia's revenue is likely to surpass consensus estimates through 2026. Muse pointed to surging demand for artificial intelligence computing and the company's new Blackwell architecture ramp. The analyst expects Nvidia to deliver a strong beat again and raise when it reports fiscal second-quarter results on August 27. He projects revenue of $48 billion and EPS of $1.06, compared with consensus expectations of $45.8 billion and $1.00 per share. Data Center sales remain the core driver, with Muse forecasting $42.9 billion from that segment alone. Looking ahead to the October quarter, he estimates $55 billion in revenue and $1.25 in EPS, again ahead of consensus at $52.6 billion and $1.18, with Data Center contributing about $49.9 billion. For the long term, Muse models Nvidia's Data Center revenue at $200 billion in calendar 2025 and $300 billion in calendar 2026, well above current Street forecasts of $181 billion and $235 billion, respectively. He projects earnings power of $4.85 per share in calendar 2025 and $8.00 in calendar 2026, compared with consensus at $4.37 and $5.89. He highlighted accelerating hyperscaler capital expenditures, expected to grow 57% in calendar 2025 and another 20% in calendar 2026, a $1.5 trillion global sovereign AI investment pipeline, and increasing enterprise adoption as the key drivers of this expansion. Muse acknowledged ongoing headwinds in China due to H20 export restrictions and tariffs, but argued that most sell-side models already exclude that revenue. Any unexpected shipments to the region could therefore provide upside to current estimates. He also noted that Nvidia's gross margins should reach the mid-70% range by late calendar 2025, supported by the mix shift to Blackwell products and ongoing efficiency gains. The analyst underscored that Nvidia's roadmap beyond Blackwell, including its Rubin platform, further strengthens visibility into calendar 2026 and positions the company for sustained leadership in AI infrastructure. Live updates on White House showdown The meeting comes fresh on the heels of the Friday, Aug. 15 summit in Anchorage session, which resulted in no major breakthroughs in peace negotiations over the years-long Russia-Ukraine war. Trump and his team are scheduled to meet with Zelenskyy and his team initially, before a later sit-down with a group of European leaders who have been staunch allies of the Ukrainian leader since the war began in February 2022, after Russia invaded. What time is the Trump-Zelenskyy meeting? See the schedule The European leaders are set to arrive at the White House at 12 p.m. ET, an hour before Zelenskyy's arrival. Gavin Newsom uses latest Trump ‘bela' post for trolling fodder. What does it mean?
President Donald Trump in a now-deleted Truth Social post gave an indecipherable message: "Bela." Screenshots shared on X show Trump posted just four letters on the morning of Aug. 17. Some people online are drawing comparisons to his infamous social media gaffe in his first term: "covfefe." The White House did not immediately respond to questions about the post, but at least one Democratic leader who has taken to trolling the president online noticed: California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Newsom has been at the forefront of a states redistricting standoff prompted by Texas lawmakers' move to redraw the state's congressional map to add more Republican seats. On Aug. 14, Newsom announced the Democratic-leaning state would hold a special election to approve a mid-decade redistricting plan. More: Newsom mocks Trump in all-caps post promising a 2026 Democratic victory Gavin Newsom continues to mock Trump on 'Bela' The California governor's office has taken to mimicking Trump's social media style in posts trolling the president and generally poking fun at Republicans online. On Aug. 18, Newsom and his press office took up the "bela" post as more fodder. "DONALD (TINY HANDS), HAS WRITTEN HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY THIS MORNING — UNFORTUNATELY (LOW IQ) HE SPELLED IT WRONG — 'BETA,'" the press office wrote on X. "SOON YOU WILL BE A 'FIRED' BETA BECAUSE OF MY PERFECT, 'BEAUTIFUL MAPS.' THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! — GCN." Trump often signs off his Truth Social messages with "thank you for your attention to this matter," or "President DJT." 'Bela' echoes 'covfefe' and other Twitter typos in Trump's first term Trump's round-the-clock posts on Twitter, now X, were a constant news source in his first term. Perhaps most famously, he posted a partial message that said, "Despite the negative press covfefe," with no more information. He later deleted it, but played up the accidental word. Covfefe wasn't his only typo: He once referred to now Attorney General Pam Bondi as "a great womem," and said a wall was important for good "Boarder Security," among others. What does 'bela' mean? The White House did not respond to a request for an explanation on Trump's post.
