NEROCA FC and Indian Navy shares spoils in goalless draw
PTI
Imphal, Aug 7 (PTI) NEROCA FC and Indian Navy FT played out a hard-fought goalless draw in their Group F match of the 134th Durand Cup football tournament to earn a point each here on Thursday.
Despite several half-chances and moments of promise, both sides failed to find the finishing touch in a match that was high on midfield battles and defensive organisation.
NEROCA head coach Gyan Moyon made three changes to his starting XI from the Imphal Derby, switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation. Jetli Sorokhaibam came in as goalkeeper, Gotimayum Muktasana was handed a midfield role, and Brazilian Lucas Da Silva slotted into the defence.
Deny Singh of Indian Navy made the first attempt in the 6th minute with a right-footed strike from the wing, but keeper Jetli Sorokhaibam was equal to the task, diving low to his left to make a comfortable save.
The Orange Brigade responded in the 11th minute when a through ball from midfield released Lourembam on the left. He sprinted down the flank and fired a shot at goal, but Bhaskar Roy handled it without fuss.
The next few minutes saw NEROCA dominate possession, testing the Sailors' defensive line with bursts from Lourembam and Rohit Meetei, but the Navy defenders held firm.
The first half saw strong defensive displays from both sides.
The best chance of the second half for the Sailors came in the 50th minute when Roshan Panna laid the ball off for Deny Singh, whose curling effort spun wide. Three minutes later, Deny had another crack from outside the box, but it went wide.
Neroca skipper Kinesh Singh nearly broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, but his left-footed placement off a lofted cross missed the target. Three minutes later, the Sailors were awarded a freekick on the edge of the box, but Adersh's effort struck the wall.
In the 88th minute, Indian Navy came close to a winner when substitute Sadananda Singh delivered a perfect ball to an unmarked Sreyas near the goal, only for the forward to hit the post. A minute later, Gomado had a similar opportunity at the other end but fired wide. PTI AH AH AT AT

'Workload management is nonsense': Former India cricketer blasts Jasprit Bumrah after IND vs ENG series
Jasprit Bumrah (PTI Photo) India recently concluded a 2-2 Test series against England, marking one of their most notable overseas performances. The series featured Jasprit Bumrah 's comeback after recovering from a back injury that had sidelined him during last year's Australia series. Bumrah participated in three out of five matches due to workload management concerns, claiming 14 wickets with two five-wicket hauls. Several cricket legends, including Sunil Gavaskar , have expressed concerns about workload management. Gautam Gambhir's fiery press conferences: Every time the India head coach lost his cool Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Former Indian cricketer Sandeep Patil shared his views on workload management during an interaction with Mid-Day. "Workload management is nonsense. You are either fit or unfit, and that's how we [his selection committee] picked teams. We did not entertain this workload business. Modern-day players have all the facilities. We did not have such rehab programmes in our playing days. At times, we carried on playing despite injuries. Let's just say we were happy playing for the country… no naatak," said Sandeep. Poll Should physiotherapists have a say in team selection? Yes, they play an important role. No, selection should be left to coaches and selectors. Patil questioned the BCCI 's stance on workload management and the role of physiotherapists in team selection. "I wonder how the BCCI is agreeing to all this. Is the physio more important than the captain, than the head coach? What about selectors? Are we to expect that the physio will be sitting in selection committee meetings now? Will he decide?" he asked. Patil emphasised the importance of dedication when representing the national team. "When you are picked for your country, you die for your country. You are a warrior. I have seen Sunil Gavaskar bat on all five days of a match, I've seen Kapil Dev bowl on most days of a Test match, and even bowl to us in the nets. They never asked for breaks, never complained, and their careers extended to 16-plus years. I didn't miss the next Test after my head injury in Australia in 1981." Patil cited examples of cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, who consistently performed without requesting breaks. He also mentioned his own experience of playing immediately after sustaining a head injury in Australia in 1981. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Mohun Bagan outclass Diamond Harbour 5-1, enter Durand Cup quarterfinals
Agency: Kolkata, Aug 9 (PTI) Dominant Mohun Bagan Super Giant overcame Diamond Harbour FC 5-1 to storm into the quarterfinals of the Durand Cup here on Saturday. In a crunch Group B match, Anirudh Thapa gave the lead to the Mariners as Luka Majcen equalised after five minutes but Jamie MacLaren, Liston Colaco, Sahal Abdul Samad and Jason Cummings ensured that Mohun Bagan qualified for the quarterfinals as group winners. Diamond Harbour will now have to rely on other results to get their place in the knockouts as one of the best second-placed teams. Mohun Bagan broke the deadlock in the 19th minute as Anirudh Thapa collected a first-time pass on the edge of the box and curled a beautifully-struck shot into the top-right corner. Diamond Harbour responded emphatically just four minutes later. A defensive mix-up from Mohun Bagan left Luka Majcen with space in the box, and he capitalised clinically by slotting home past the advancing Vishal Kaith to restore parity. The match remained evenly poised until the 33rd minute when Bagan regained control. A poor pass from the Diamond Harbour goalkeeper gifted possession to Jamie MacLaren, who pounced instantly with a precise toe-poke finish that restored the Mariners' lead and sent the home crowd into raptures. As the referee blew for halftime, Mohun Bagan held a narrow lead at 2–1. In the second half, it didn't take long for Bagan to tighten their grip on the contest. Just minutes after the restart, the Mariners were awarded a penalty when Liston Colaco was brought down inside the box by Naresh Singh Yendrembam following a sharp run. The foul resulted in the defender receiving a straight red card and Diamond Harbour being reduced to ten men. Colaco stepped up for the resultant penalty and converted with composure, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 3–1. The pressure paid off in the 64th minute when a defensive lapse from Diamond Harbour allowed Sahal to pounce on a loose ball inside the box. With trademark calmness, the midfielder slotted home past the goalkeeper to seal Bagan's fourth goal of the night. In the 80th minute Cummings, positioned with acres of space on the edge of the box, was played in perfectly by a well-timed pass. With composure and precision, Cummings stroked the ball into the net, marking a splendid fifth goal for Mohun Bagan.
