'Workload management is nonsense': Former India cricketer blasts Jasprit Bumrah after IND vs ENG series
India recently concluded a 2-2 Test series against England, marking one of their most notable overseas performances. The series featured
Jasprit Bumrah
's comeback after recovering from a back injury that had sidelined him during last year's Australia series.
Bumrah participated in three out of five matches due to workload management concerns, claiming 14 wickets with two five-wicket hauls. Several cricket legends, including
Sunil Gavaskar
, have expressed concerns about workload management.

Former Indian cricketer
Sandeep Patil
shared his views on workload management during an interaction with Mid-Day.
"Workload management is nonsense. You are either fit or unfit, and that's how we [his selection committee] picked teams.
We did not entertain this workload business. Modern-day players have all the facilities. We did not have such rehab programmes in our playing days. At times, we carried on playing despite injuries. Let's just say we were happy playing for the country… no naatak," said Sandeep.
Poll
Should physiotherapists have a say in team selection?
Yes, they play an important role.
No, selection should be left to coaches and selectors.
Patil questioned the
BCCI
's stance on workload management and the role of physiotherapists in team selection.
"I wonder how the BCCI is agreeing to all this.
Is the physio more important than the captain, than the head coach? What about selectors? Are we to expect that the physio will be sitting in selection committee meetings now? Will he decide?" he asked.
Patil emphasised the importance of dedication when representing the national team.
"When you are picked for your country, you die for your country. You are a warrior. I have seen Sunil Gavaskar bat on all five days of a match, I've seen
Kapil Dev
bowl on most days of a Test match, and even bowl to us in the nets.
They never asked for breaks, never complained, and their careers extended to 16-plus years. I didn't miss the next Test after my head injury in Australia in 1981."
Patil cited examples of cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, who consistently performed without requesting breaks. He also mentioned his own experience of playing immediately after sustaining a head injury in Australia in 1981.

Sourav Ganguly fuels Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma exit buzz ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup: 'Difficult to say. Whoever...'
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Sunday addressed the growing chatter over the ODI futures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, after a media report claimed India's upcoming ODI series in Australia this October could be their final international appearance in the format. Sourav Ganguly reacted to Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma exit buzz ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup According to Dainik Jagran, the three-match series — which will mark the start of India's preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa — could see Kohli and Rohit call time on their ODI careers. If they aim to continue until 2027, the report added, they would need to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's domestic List A tournament, to stay match-ready and in contention for selection. The BCCI's domestic participation condition, the report suggested, might prompt the duo to retire. Both players retired from T20Is in June 2024 after India's World Cup win in Barbados and shocked fans in May by stepping away from Test cricket within a week of each other, just before the England tour squad announcement. Reacting to the speculation, Ganguly said he was unaware of such a development. "I'm not aware of this, can't comment on this,' he remarked when asked about the speculation. However, the India legend agreed with the idea that performance should dictate career longevity. "It's difficult to say. Whoever does well will play. If they do well, they should continue. Kohli's one-day record is phenomenal, even Rohit Sharma's. Both of them are phenomenal in white-ball cricket,' he said during AWL Agri Business Ltd Event. The ODI tour of Australia will begin on October 19, with matches scheduled in Perth, Adelaide and Sydney, and it will be followed by a three-match home series against South Africa. In 2026, India will play ODI matches against New Zealand, Afghanistan, England, the West Indies, and another contest against New Zealand. Ganguly also had his say on the upcoming Asia Cup tournament, which will begin from September 9 in the UAE. The former India opener backed India to retain the title. 'They are in the middle of a break. After the IPL, they played five Tests and now they will play the Asia Cup from September 9. "India are very strong, and if they are strong in red-ball cricket, they are even stronger in white-ball cricket. So, in my opinion, India are favourites, and beating them on those good Dubai wickets will be very tough.'

When Picked For Your Country, You Die For Your County : 1983 WC Winner Who Gave Bumrah His India Debut, Slams BCCI Over Mishandling
Former BCCI selection committee chairman and 1983 World Cup winner Sandip Patil has come down heavily on the current selection regime for their handling of Jasprit Bumrah's workload management during India's recently concluded tour of England, dismissing the idea as 'nonsense.' Bumrah, India's pace spearhead, played three out of the five Tests in the series as per the advice of team doctors who wanted to manage his bowling workload. India won both matches in which Bumrah was absent, but his non-participation including missing the final Test due to a niggle did raise questions. Bumrah's Injury History & Selection Limitation Bumrah's fitness concerns have been well-documented. During India's away tour of Australia, he suffered a back stress fracture in the final Test, ruling him out for almost four months. To avoid aggravating his injury, team physios and NCA medical staff recommended that he should not play more than three matches on long overseas tours. In the England series, the 31-year-old finished with 14 wickets from the three matches he played. Sandip Patil: 'You Are Either Fit or You Are Not' Patil who chaired the selection panel between 2012 and 2016 and was the one to hand Bumrah his maiden opportunity on an away series to Australia minced no words while questioning the board's approach. "I wonder how the BCCI is agreeing to all this. Is the physio more important than the captain, than the head coach? What about selectors? Are we to expect that the physio will be sitting in selection committee meetings now?" Patil told Mid-Day. "Workload management is nonsense. You are either fit or unfit, and that's how we [his selection committee] picked teams. We did not entertain this workload business." 'When You Play for Your Country, You Give Everything' Patil also drew comparisons with cricketing legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, as well as his own experiences. "When you are picked for your country, you die for your country. You are a warrior. I have seen Sunil Gavaskar bat on all five days of a match, I've seen Kapil Dev bowl on most days of a Test match, and even bowl to us in the nets. They never asked for breaks, never complained, and their careers extended to 16-plus years. I didn't miss the next Test after my head injury in Australia in 1981." Mixed Response from Fans, Some Push Back Patil's strong words sparked heated debate online. Many felt he was being overdramatic, with some fans arguing that enforcing workload management could prevent career-threatening injuries for players like Bumrah. Others noted that Bumrah's three-match participation was agreed upon before the series began a joint decision by the head coach, captain, and selectors making the criticism unfair. "Very very unfortunate the way, Bumrah's case has been presented. It was decided pre-series, that he will be playing only 3 Tests, then what's the fuss about. And if there's that big an issue with him picking and choosing, don't select him. Have never seen such arguments from English cricketers about Wood, Archer (sic)." Bumrah, who is currently No. 1 in the ICC Men's Test Bowling Rankings, has played 91 Test innings and taken 219 wickets at an exceptional average of 19.82.

'Pant Batting With A Broken Toe Exemplified Team's Philosophy': Karun Nair
Last Updated: Karun Nair praised Rishabh Pant for batting with a fractured toe in the fourth Test at Manchester. Pant's injury occurred while facing Chris Woakes. He will miss the 2025 Asia Cup. Indian batter Karun Nair has lauded his teammate Rishabh Pant for batting with a fracture in the fourth Test at Manchester. The wicketkeeper-batter picked up the injury while batting against England at Old Trafford. He looked to reverse sweep a Chris Woakes delivery. He missed the shot and only managed an inside edge onto his right boot. He quickly took off his glove and began hobbling. The Indian team physio rushed to the middle and took off his shoe, which showed blood oozing out and the spot being heavily swollen. He returned the next day to bat and smashed a fifty with an injured foot Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, Nair said Pant's attitude defined the team as a whole. '…to see Rishabh walk out to bat with a broken toe – it was one of the moments of the series. It was astonishing for everyone to see. It told you what a great player he is, and more importantly, the person he is," Nair said. 'That kind of exemplified the philosophy of the team. Of putting everything first for the team, it's not about individuals," he added. Pant Likely To Miss Asia Cup The Times of India on Thursday (August 7) stated that the 27-year-old wicketkeeper-batter will miss the 2025 edition of the Asia Cup, and he also remains doubtful for the two-match Test series against the West Indies. 'Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant won't require surgery after a toe fracture during the fourth Test in Manchester. However, Pant has been ruled out of action for at least six weeks. He will miss the Asia Cup and possibly the West Indies series," the TOI report read. The Asia Cup 2025 will be played from September 9 to 28 in the UAE, whereas the two-match Test series between India and the West Indies is scheduled to take place between October 2 and 14 in Ahmedabad and Delhi.
