Pinto's Wine Land to become history soon
Hubballi: Pinto's Wine Land, a liquor outlet over 125 years old, is set to shut down by the end of this month as the family running in it was upset with rise in alcohol-related incidents.

The family is moving to manufacturing Kokum juice, in a bid to promote a healthy drink.
The Pinto family, who migrated from Goa, established this shop mainly to cater to the needs of British Railway officers and others. Due to their establishment, the nearby circle was fondly called Pintos, serving as a gateway for people coming from Gadag Road. It became a landmark with Pinto Road as well. Its reputation was sustained with original liquor when second-quality liquor from Kamaripet dominated the Hubballi market.
Five generations of the family engaged in the business.
Mohan Pinto, the current owner of the outlet, told TOI that after 2-3 years of discussion, the decision is being implemented now. "Though we adopted honesty and ethics in this business, alcohol is negative on a larger scale. We felt bad when youngsters came to buy liquor. Recent incidents like the Pune hit-and-run case disturbed us a lot. We also observed misbehaviour by some customers with our lady staff," he said.
Lona Mohan Pinto, a psychologist, said she worked in a de-addiction centre in Bengaluru before marrying Mohan. "Everyone joked that we could run contrasting businesses of a wine shop and a de-addiction centre together. However, my mother-in-law Julia often made Kokum juice at home, and we had the habit of distributing it to all our friends and customers at no cost, sensitising them about health benefits of Kokum juice.

As it became popular, our well-wishers suggested not to distribute it for free but collecting a nominal charge. Later, we researched it and purchased machinery six years ago," she said.
Neetu (name changed) said she was one of the few female customers of the shop. "We bought without any fear as lady staff were appointed at this shop. It was secure enough. Now we are worried about where we should buy liquor for our family members," she said.
The Pinto family was closely associated with the Mysuru royal family, as a son-in-law of Isabella Albuquerque (great grand mother of Mohan Pinto) was an assistant to the Mysuru queen. A Bluthner, a European model piano gifted by the Mysuru family, is still with the Pinto family. During her visit to Hubballi, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited Pinto's home. Though it's a Christian family, it has been generous enough to choose names like Mohan, Arjun, and Aditya for children.

MDA to soon implement e-Office to streamline workflow
Mysuru: The e-Office software platform, which has revolutionised administrative workflow in govt agencies, will be implemented in the Mysuru Development Authority (MDA) within the next week. The software enables seamless digital documentation of all govt records and correspondences between various sections of the authority, officials said. It allows officers at the senior level to track the status of every work at their fingertips. MDA special land acquisition officer KR Rakshith, who is in-charge commissioner of MDA, told TOI that the e-Office software facilitates officers at the senior level to track progress online. "Currently, all internal file movement at the authority is done manually, and within the next week, it will be made online. This means MDA will go paperless," he said. "As senior officers, we can track the file and its current position online and identify reasons for the delay at every level. Even the number of days delayed in attending to a file by a staffer will be shown online. Online tracking will ensure the works are done quickly without unnecessary delay," the KAS officer said. "A two-day training was organised for all staffers at MDA to start using the software, which ensures transparent administration, as directed by govt," he explained. The e-Office software allows electronic filing, workflow management, and access to govt services. The software helps digitise workflow, facilitates faster decision-making, and improves transparency in govt operations. The system features robust security protocols to protect sensitive govt data while maintaining transparency in operations. Govt employees can access the platform through secure login credentials, helping them manage correspondence, create digital files, and process applications efficiently. The software includes features like digital signatures, file noting, and document management that have significantly reduced paper usage and storage requirements. The platform facilitates faster decision-making by enabling real-time file movement between various administrative levels. Citizens benefit from this digital transformation through faster response times to their applications and queries. The platform also includes features for managing leave applications, employee records, and office inventory. Environmental benefits include a significant reduction in paper consumption and physical storage space requirements. An officer claimed that the system's mobile compatibility allows officials to access and process files even while working remotely. 1 in 7 IIM Trichy graduates fail to get placed
Trichy: For a long time, the conventional belief was that getting into any of the Indian Institutes of Management guaranteed a job with a fancy salary. But to get placed itself may not be a certainty, let alone landing a handsome package. At IIM-Trichy, roughly one in seven students from the 2023-25 batch have not secured placements, while 27% of the batch secured jobs with packages exceeding ₹20 lakh. As soon as the official placement report was released this year, TOI had reported that not all got placed. Now, an RTI response sought by an activist, the accuracy of which was confirmed by TOI from officials at the institution, revealed that as many as 59 out of 384 students from the 2023-25 batch did not receive placements. Officials attribute this 'steep decline' in placements to external factors. "Unlike other programmes, the success here is market-driven, and there seems to be a downturn in the job market this year," a senior IIM-T official said. While the highest CTC has gradually increased over the years, this is the first time in many years that such a high number of students were not placed. The institution has typically maintained strong placement records, except for the 2020–2022 batch when 34 students were left unplaced. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Upto 15% Discount for Salaried Individuals ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo That figure has now nearly doubled in five years. A few students among the 59 have found alternate routes by securing jobs on their own, albeit with lower compensation. "I expected to get a placement through the institute that would help me pay off my debt quickly. But with no placement, I had to find a job myself. The package I received is not even 30% of the lowest salary offered through campus placements at IIM. It's going to be much harder to clear my loan," a student who remained unplaced told TOI. Officials across B-schools said that a saturated job market is contributing to the placement shortfall. "This is a phenomenon across campuses, and opportunities are shrinking. There is ongoing uncertainty in the global market. Recruiters are being conservative in their manpower planning, and the number of recruitments per recruiter has come down," a professor from BIMS told TOI. At BIMS, out of the 120 students in the 2023–25 batch, 19 have not been placed. "But the window is still open. We will ensure that they get placed within this month," Dr. Asit K. Barma, Director of BIMS, told TOI. He added that the market is evolving, and recruiters are increasingly looking for technology-oriented specializations such as HR analytics, sustainable marketing, robotic process automation, and green finance, rather than simply valuing the tag of a prestigious institution. Microchip giant NVIDIA woos European markets amid ongoing US-China trade war
Santa Clara, June 12 (UNI) American microchip giant NVIDIA is now wooing European markets, pledging to build 20 AI factories across Europe, as the ongoing US-China trade war has led to the tech conglomerate to suffer huge losses. CEO Jensen Huang, speaking at the annual VivaTech conference in Paris on Wednesday, said that the company was building the world's first 'industrial artificial intelligence cloud' for European manufacturers. The Germany-based facility, a key part of the AI factory (specialised data center) initiative, is set to be equipped with 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), helping European firms such as carmaker BMW Group accelerate manufacturing applications – from design and engineering to robotics, reports South China Morning Post. Stating that Europe had now 'awakened' to the 'importance of AI factories and AI infrastructure', Huang added that NVIDIA plans to boost AI computing capacity in Europe tenfold over the next two years to help local researchers and start-ups address GPU shortages. NVIDIA has also announced a partnership with the French AI company Mistral AI to create a cloud platform powered by 18,000 of its latest chips, enabling European businesses to develop AI based on Mistral's models. To attract more European clients to counter the US restrictions on tech trade with China and make up for its losses in revenue, NVIDIA has been expanding its existing offerings such as DGX Cloud Lepton, an AI platform that provides a marketplace selling access to GPUs available from a growing network of cloud providers, the company said.
