
Poor sales at Puma and Zara owner fuels fears of slowing US consumer sales
Unexpectedly poor results from sports brand Puma and the fashion group Inditex, which owns Zara, had fuelled fears about slowing consumer appetite in the US amid uncertainty over Donald Trump's tariffs.
Shares in Puma dived by more than a fifth as the company put out a trading statement warning that sales growth this year would be slower than hoped as 'geopolitical tensions and macroeconomic challenges will continue, especially trade disputes and currency volatility, which is expected to weigh on consumer sentiment and demand'.
Piral Dadhania, a retail analyst at Royal Bank of Canada, said: 'There are some concerns around brand heat, increasing competition and North America distribution.'
Inditex shares were down by 8% on Wednesday morning as the company said underlying sales fell by 4% in the five weeks to 10 March, well behind analysts' expectations and a big drop from the 10.5% increase rung up for the year to 31 January.
The company indicated it was not concerned about this short period of tough trading, which was set against strong growth in the same period a year before, and pointed to an uptick in growth to 7% in the most recent week.
One analyst, who declined to be named, said the slowdown was likely to be largely down to poor weather in Europe in January.
Inditex's annual figures indicated a weakening of trade in the Americas compared with other markets, which some analysts suggested could be linked to uncertainty among US and Mexican consumers amid the Trump regime's indecision over tariffs.
Ignacio Fernández, the finance director of Inditex, pointed to currency weaknesses in Brazil and Mexico which he said had been offset by 'strong dollar sales'.
Oscar García Maceiras, the chief executive of Inditex, said: 'The current environment is difficult to predict in terms of tariffs. Of course, we are continuously monitoring the situation.'

He said Inditex felt it was in a very good position 'due to our levels of geographical diversification in terms of sourcing and sales'. He added that Inditex's experience in many markets meant it was used to dealing with different tariff regimes.
García Maceiras said that Inditex continued to expect to hold its profit margins despite the threat of US tariffs as it would benefit from its tactic of making most of its clothing in Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Turkey, which meant it had 'a flexible business model with a competitive advantage'.

Furious Trump walks away from Canada trade talks
Donald Trump has walked away from trade talks with Canada in response to a digital services tax he described as a 'blatant attack on our country'. The president said he had immediately ended discussions taking place to address the series of tariffs he placed on the country earlier this year. In a post on Truth Social, Mr Trump said his administration had been informed that Canada was planning to proceed with a three per cent tax on technology companies such as Meta, Uber, Amazon and Google, on revenue earned from Canadian customers. Because the tax is retroactive, the American companies could face a bill of as much as $2bn by the end of the month. On Thursday, Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary, said the Group of Seven nations would put a pause on the taxes for US tech companies. In exchange, he said Republicans in Congress were planning to halt a so-called revenge tax on foreign investors. 'Based on this egregious tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on trade with Canada, effective immediately,' Mr Trump wrote. 'We will let Canada know the tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period.' Canada is the US's second biggest trading partner after Mexico, and bought around $350bn (£255) worth of American goods last year, according to official data. In exchange, it exported $412bn (£300) of goods. Canadians were stunned when Mr Trump announced major tariffs on its northern neighbour, as well as Mexico. Canada hit back at the 25 per cent levy on steel and aluminium, with a similar tariff on a range of US items. Mark Carney has said the trading relationship between the two countries had been changed forever. Anger over the tariffs was one of the reasons Mr Carney's beleaguered Liberal Party was re-elected, despite being poised to lose to the Conservative Party in a general election in May. Mr Carney who previously led both the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, took a hard line against the US president as he continued to make '51st state' jibes. There was no immediate response from Mr Carney's office on Friday's development. It comes as Mr Trump's government is set to reimpose a number of high tariffs that he announced in April on almost all of America's trading partners. Of those nations, only two countries, Britain and China, have agreements with the US to even a framework of a trade deal.

Another extraordinary week ended on Friday with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq hitting all-time highs as investors ramped up bets that U.S. interest rates will soon fall, a stunning turnaround from the post-'Liberation Day' tariff gloom of early April. Several developments this week fed into the rate cut narrative - the Iran-Israel ceasefire, tumbling oil prices, soft U.S. economic data, dovish comments from some Fed officials, and renewed pressure from President Donald Trump on the Fed to ease. Fed Chair Jerome Powell pushed back against suggestions rates could be cut as soon as July, arguing that the impact of tariffs should be assessed first, and the consensus among the Fed's 19 rate-setters is to hold the line too. But traders are now leaning towards three quarter-point rate cuts this year. Progress on trade is also boosting investor sentiment. But, sources claimed moving production to the US was being discussed. This would put 1,300 jobs at risk if plans were to go ahead. It emerges after production in Hethel was temporarily suspended due to the tariffs on cars being imported to the US. The hikes meant business with the States was at risk, with American sellers required to pay taxes of 25% on imports of cars and car parts. In fact, exports to the US have halved since Trump's tariffs were introduced, figures revealed. This comes after the firm warned it is being forced to make more cuts, after scrapping hundreds of jobs. Lotus again blamed the "volatility" caused by Donald Trump's trade tariffs for the cuts. The luxury sports car company announced the cuts despite the fact it has almost doubled sales over the last year. The motorcar firm recorded 12,134 sales in the 2024 financial year, a 74% increase on the 6970 sales made the previous year. The modern classic Lotus Elise However, Lotus made just £21.7m in gross profit, a significant decrease on the £76.3 million it made the previous year. Chief financial officer Daxue Wang blamed the decrease in profits on the impact of worldwide tariffs and "global trade uncertainties." He added that Lotus, which will become one company when the sports car division merges with the Chinese electric car division, will be forced to undergo "strategic cost optimisation to improve profitability." 'As we progress with the acquisition of Lotus UK, we are committed to driving cost streamlining and operational enhancements across all markets to continuously deliver long-term value,' Mr Wang said. The beginning of these cost-cutting measures was announced last month, when the manufacturer announced that it would be cutting 270 jobs. The brand promised it was "committed to the UK" despite the cuts, but this has done little to ease fears. A spokesperson said: "The proposed restructuring is vital to enhance our competitiveness in today's market. "Lotus Cars has announced a proposed business restructure to ensure sustainable operations, amid volatile and evolving market conditions including the US tariffs and shifting consumer demand for sports cars. "The company plans to increase synergies across the wider Lotus brand and with its largest shareholder and technology partner, Geely Holding Group. "It will look at greater resource sharing and collaboration in technology, engineering, and operations." Days after the job cuts were announced, Lotus' current owner Geely International, triggered a 2023 agreement to force Lotus Technology Inc to buy back 51 per cent of Lotus Advanced Technologies. Currently Geely owns 51 per cent of Lotus, with the other 49 percent owned by Malaysian group Etika Automotive. Qingfeng Feng, Senior Vice President of Geely Holding Group and CEO of Group Lotus, said: "This acquisition marks a critical milestone in our strategic journey to fully integrate all businesses under the Lotus brand. "It will strengthen brand equity and enhance our operational flexibility and internal synergies. "We are confident that the transaction will create substantial long-term value for our shareholders." Donald Trump's introduction of 25 percent tariffs on car imports to the US has heaped huge pressure on car brands. The UK sends one sixth of all of the cars it builds each year to the US. These include luxe models from car brands such as Aston Martin, Rolls Royce and Land Rover. Sales to the US amount to about 100,000 a year, with a worth of around £8 billion. Trump has claimed that the import tax for cars, which came into play on April 2, would lead to "tremendous growth" for the industry.
