‘The White Lotus' Helps Billy Preston Earn A Posthumous Top 10 Smash with 'Nothing From Nothing'
'Nothing From Nothing' has long been a standout in Preston's catalog. The track returns to the Billboard charts this week after a prominent placement in the series finale of The White Lotus. The cut debuts at No. 6 on the R&B Digital Song Sales chart, easily entering the top 10. It also lands at No. 15 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales ranking.
Neither of the rankings that 'Nothing From Nothing' appears on this frame existed during Preston's heyday. Both digital song sales lists track purchases on platforms like Amazon and iTunes—services that weren't introduced until the early 2000s, just a few years before Preston's death in 2006.
'Nothing From Nothing' gives Preston his first-ever appearance on these rosters, including a debut top 10 on the R&B Digital Song Sales chart.
The renewed attention for 'Nothing From Nothing' stems directly from its inclusion in The White Lotus. The hit HBO show wrapped up its most recent season with a huge number of viewers, and many of them rushed to consume Preston's cut following the episode's airing.
According to Spotify, streams of 'Nothing From Nothing' increased by 370% the day after the finale aired. Sales also saw a massive bump, helping the track earn its way back onto the Billboard charts.
'Nothing From Nothing' was released in 1974 as part of Preston's album The Kids and Me. The track became a massive success, hitting No. 1 on the Hot 100 – one of several leaders from the rocker and R&B powerhouse – and helping prove that the musician and Beatles collaborator was a true star.

This excellent horror is one of three underrated Prime Video movies to watch (August 1-3)
If you've ever spent time browsing Amazon Prime Video, you know that the streaming service tends to recommend the same few things every time you log in. That's partially by design. After all, Amazon is just like any other streaming service — it has an algorithm that points you toward specific things. If you want to branch out, though, we've got you covered. We've pulled together three underrated movies that are all perfect ways to spend the weekend and might involve checking out movies that Amazon hasn't shown you a million times. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. The Perfect Storm (2000) A great blockbuster from an era without superhero movies, The Perfect Storm stars George Clooney as a ship captain whose crew is hit by three massive weather events that combine to create the titular perfect storm. Featuring effects that hold up remarkably well 25 years later and a cast filled with dudes who you come to care about over the course of the movie, The Perfect Storm has aged remarkably well. Of course, it doesn't hurt that it has a performance as magnetic as Clooney's, holding things together at the center. You can watch The Perfect Storm on Amazon Prime Video. Smile 2 (2024) The original Smile was a pretty interesting horror movie, but it also felt constrained in ways that Smile 2definitely does not. This sequel follows a major pop star struggling with addiction who becomes haunted by a series of smiling ghouls, leading to a descent into madness. Smile 2 is dark, twisted, and largely unpredictable. It's anchored by a remarkable central performance from Naomi Scott, who manages to make the psychological terror at the heart of this movie feel totally real. You can watch Smile 2 on Amazon Prime Video. Stranger Than Fiction (2006) An important reminder that Will Ferrell is a better actor than you might think, Stranger Than Fiction follows an IRS auditor who starts hearing narration that convinces him that he's a fictional character. As he rebels against the narrator that dictates his every move and tries to prove that his life is an interesting and fulfilling one, Stranger Than Fiction becomes both more interesting and circular. While it can be a difficult movie to wrap your head around, Stranger Than Fiction is the exact right combination of funny and compelling. You can watch Stranger Than Fiction on Amazon Prime Video.

10 Best Fake Songs From Fake Movie Bands
This summer has seen some pretty catchy needle drops in movies, from Superman's Mighty Crabjoys to KPop Demon Hunters flash mob fandoms for Huntr/x and the Saja Boys. The latter Netflix release has reached not only Billboard music charts but also become the most streamed animated feature ever. With that in mind, we look back at our favorite fake bands' best songs of the past 30 years. While half the list includes incredible recent music from hit movies, the other half (and our number one slot) nod at the songs that really propelled this particular niche in movies—think A Goofy Movie. So, if you notice some of your favorites missing, simmer down because we excluded musicals and kept to genre movies that had original songs featured in them. Like Superman, we can't help but think this song is for the cool kids. No matter how hard we tried, we could not get 'Try Everything' out of our heads, and Gazelle (voiced by Shakira) might be back in Zootopia 2. Finally, the full single from Freaky Friday has been released for Freakier Friday sung by Pink Slip's in-universe lead singer Christina Vidal Mitchell. Josie and the Pussycats was such an underrated gem when it came out but was formative for millennials. We know there are so many songs, and it was hard to narrow it to one, so we went with 'Three Small Words' (featuring Kay Hanley as the voice of lead singer Josie), which encompasses the moment in time this movie embodies for a generation. Sammie (Miles Caton) in the Sinners universe went on to become a blues legend, but the night that changed his life was when he first performed 'I Lied to You.' The scene is hands down one of Ryan Coogler's masterpieces, and the music sizzles off the celluloid fever dream… just watch. It took a few years, but the Envy Adams (Brie Larson) on-screen performance of the Clash at Demonhead's 'Black Sheep' was finally released on Spotify and other platforms to enjoy. We love Metric's version, but the angst in the movie version is top tier. The Billie Eilish and Finneas-produced songs from Pixar's Turning Red are all so good. This one was also hard to narrow down, but the chorus of 'Nobody Like U' is never not on my mind. The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack also has too many killer songs from each band to pick from. While I particularly love 'Soda Pop,' we have to give the Saja Boys props for 'Your Idol' for charting on Billboard. In 'Golden,' we get lyricist Ejae's heart and soul shining through. The powerful anthem is coming for 'Let It Go''s crown in replayability among young animation fans. Powerline is the blueprint, the O.G. of modern fake music pop stars thanks to A Goofy Movie. Vocalist Tevin Campbell made an icon so scene-stealing we're still waiting for a full Powerline album 30 years later… or at least a sequel with more fake music to dance to. Want more io9 news?
