Home Run Derby Prize Would Double These Sluggers' 2025 Salaries

Yahoo2 days ago
Pirates slugger Oneil Cruz has 1 million reasons to swing for the fences during Monday night's Home Run Derby in Atlanta.
Three of the eight contestants, including Cruz, are making less this year in salary than the prize purse of $1 million for the Derby winner.

Cruz, 26 years old; Nationals outfielder James Wood, 22; and Rays infielder Junior Caminero, 22, are all making between $750,000 and $800,000 this year under MLB's collective bargaining terms for players with fewer than three years of top-level service.
'When I was like 12, I did some Home Run Derbys,' Wood recently told The Washington Post. 'The prizes were like a bat, so it's a little different now.'
Under the terms of the CBA, the derby runner-up receives $500,000 while the six other participants each go home with $150,000. The batter with the longest home run pockets an additional $100,000.

Cruz is among bettors' favorites for the event, along with Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh. Braves first baseman Matt Olson will be swinging on home soil, joined by Twins outfielder—and Georgia native—Byron Buxton, Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm and Athletics outfielder Brent Rooker.
Buxton has the second-biggest blast of 2025 so far, a 479-foot homer against the Rangers. Mike Trout's 484-foot roundtripper from April still leads the league. Raleigh enters Monday's competition with a league-leading 38 home runs.
The derby's $2.5 million overall prize pool was increased in 2019 as part of an agreement with the players association. While then-31-year-old Teoscar Hernandez took home the prize last season, the event has otherwise been a young man's game; the winner hasn't been older than 26 since 2015. Giancarlo Stanton (2016), Aaron Judge (2017), Bryce Harper (2018), Pete Alonso (2019, 2021), Juan Soto (2022) and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (2023) won the previous seven editions before landing even bigger paydays for their day jobs. All six hitters will likely be represented in Sportico's list of the Top 15 Highest-Paid MLB Players once Guerrero's new deal fully kicks in.
Judge has said he'd only participate again if the All-Star Game was in New York City, while Shohei Ohtani, who has the third-most homers in the league, cited the current knockout structure in explaining his absence. 'With the current rules in place, I don't think it's feasible for me to compete well,' Ohtani said in June. The Japanese superstar previously competed in 2021, and the derby format was updated last year. Competitors are now limited to three minutes or 40 swings in the first round, with the top four moving on to a pair of two-minute or 27-swing knockout rounds.

In 2021, Ohtani handed his $150,000 to Angels employees while Alonso has used a portion of his derby earnings to support multiple nonprofit causes.
The 2024 home run contest averaged 5.45 million viewers, up against Republican National Convention coverage. The All-Star Game averaged 7.44 million viewers. Each player on the winning All-Star Game side gets $25,000. The 2025 Home Run Derby airs on ESPN and ESPN2.
Discussing his decision to join the fray, Cruz said he's in it for more than the dollars.
'I'm really, really happy, just because that's what I do,' Cruz said on Tuesday. 'I like to hit balls far. I think I'm going to enjoy it a lot.'

Commissioner Rob Manfred says MLB is in a better position to reach broadcast agreements for 2026-28

ATLANTA — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says the sport is in a better position to reach national broadcasting agreements for 2026-28 after he attended the annual Allen & Co. Conference of media and finance leaders in Idaho. ESPN said in February it was ending after this season its agreement to broadcast Sunday night games, the All-Star Home Run Derby and the Wild Card Series. MLB's other agreements, with Fox and TBS, run through the 2028 season, and MLB wants all its national broadcast contracts to end at the same time. Manfred said in early June he hoped to reach a deal before the All-Star break. 'I had a great week last week. I was in Sun Valley,' he told the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Tuesday. 'I had lot of conversations that moved us significantly closer to a deal and I don't believe it's going to be long.' MLB has been starting to assemble local rights and this season is producing and distributing broadcasts of Arizona, Cleveland, Colorado, Minnesota and San Diego. 'I think it's very important, in fact, crucial, that when we go to the market for our post-'28 deals, that we have the ability to say to our broadcast partners: We have all these rights, what have traditionally been our national, what have traditionally have been our local, let's cut them up in a way that is the best in terms of reaching our fans and maximizing our revenue,' he said. 'And I think in an environment that's as disrupted as the current media environment, that kind of flexibility is absolutely crucial.' 'I see the MLB media operating of clubs as an interim arrangement to get us to 2028,' he added. 'It's not a goal that I'm pursuing in and of itself. Rather, it is an interim step for clubs that we happen to provide the best alternative given what's happened in the local markets.' Manfred describes broadcast rights and the collective bargaining agreement as key factors in franchise values. The economic study committee established two years ago has looked into those issues. 'It was never a mask for labor,' Manfred said. 'It was a process designed to think through why, what about our economic system has put us in a position where our franchise values have not grown as quickly as some other sports and try to figure out how we might fix that.' Tampa Bay, controlled by Stuart Sternberg since October 2005, said last month it had entered exclusive discussions for a sale to a group led by Patrick Zalupski, Bill Cosgrove and Ken Babby, and The Athletic reported Monday that a sale is expected to be finalized by September. 'I have no reason to quibble with or dispute the reports that have been out there,' Manfred said. Because of damage caused to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg last October by Hurricane Milton, the Rays are playing home games this season at Steinbrenner Field, the New York Yankees spring training facility in Tampa. 'We think we're going to be ready to play in '26 in the Trop,' Manfred said, adding that there are contingency plans to start the season elsewhere before moving to Tropicana Field later in the year if the stadium isn't ready by opening day. He didn't say what the contingency plans were. MLB reaffirmed the Rays would play postseason games this year at Steinbrenner Field, saying other sites were not considered. The Pohlad family announced last October it was exploring a sale of the team, which the family has controlled since 1984. Justin Ishbia, a brother of Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia, was thought to be interested, but the Chicago White Sox announced last month he was becoming a limited partner in a deal that could allow him to becoming controlling owner. 'A big part of the delay in Minnesota was associated with the leader in clubhouse making the decision to do something else,' Manfred said. 'There will be a transaction. You just need to be patient while they rework.' Moving from Oakland, the Athletics are playing the first of what the team says will be three seasons at a Triple-A ballpark in West Sacramento. 'If I had a brand new gleaming stadium to move them into, we would have done that,' Manfred said. 'Right now it is my expectation that they will play in Sacramento until they move to Las Vegas.' Manfred addressed MLB's efforts to monitor sports gambling, which led in June 2024 to a lifetime ban of San Diego's Tucupita Marcano along with one-year suspensions of four players, the firing of umpire Pat Hoberg in February and a pending probe into Cleveland pitcher Luis Ortiz. MLB increased efforts after the U.S. Supreme Court in May 2018 struck down a federal law that had barred betting on football, basketball, baseball and other sports in most states. 'I know there was a lot of sports betting, tons of it that went on illegally and we had no idea, no idea what threats there were to the integrity of the play because it was all not transparent,' Manfred said. 'I firmly believe that the transparency and monitoring that we have in place now, as a result of the legalization and the partnerships that we've made, puts us in a better position to protect baseball than we were in before.' MLB has hoped for legal modifications, including around prop bets. 'There are certain types of bets that strike me as unnecessary and particularly vulnerable, things where it's one single act doesn't affect the outcome necessarily,' he added. MLB removed mention of its diversity from its MLB Careers webpage in March, following the start of the Trump administration. 'Sometimes you have to look at how the world's changing around you and readjust where you are,' Manfred said. 'There were certain aspects of some of our programs that were very, very explicitly race-based and/or gender-based. We know because there were public comments to the effect that people in Washington were aware of that and we felt it was important to recast our programs in a way to make sure that we can continue on with our programs, to continue to pursue the values that we have always adhered to without tripping what could be legal problems that would interfere with that process.' Next year's game is set for Philadelphia and MLB plans to announce later this month the 2027 game will be at Chicago's Wrigley Field. Manfred mentioned Baltimore, Boston and Toronto as possible future sites for All-Star Games. Manfred wouldn't speculate whether MLB will try to cut minor league affiliates from 120 to 90 when current Professional Development Licenses expire after the 2030 season. 'There is a lot going on. College baseball's changing big time,' he said. 'It's just impossible for me to speculate but don't take that as he thinks it's going to be smaller or bigger.'

Caitlin Clark injury update: Fever superstar exits Sun game late

The Indiana Fever got the 85-77 victory over the Connecticut Sun at TD Garden on Tuesday night, but the win could prove to be incredibly costly. Superstar guard Caitlin Clark left the game with less than a minute left in regulation and looked to be in noticeable pain. Advertisement After she's missed 10 games this season with both a quad strain (5 games) and a groin injury (5 games), the troubling sequence of events that closed Tuesday night's contest could hint to yet another injury. The Sun game was the fourth contest she's played in since her second return from injury last week. While there is no official word on Clark's condition as of now, her status for Indiana's Wednesday road game against the New York Liberty and the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game festivities are officially in question. After the game, Fever coach Stephanie White indicated that Clark "felt a little something in her groin," per IndyStar's Chloe Peterson. An evaluation will follow, per White. It's possible that this could be a new groin injury on the right side of her body, per a reporter's observation from the post-game press conference. We'll keep you updated once we know more on Clark's condition. Advertisement This article originally appeared on For The Win: Caitlin Clark injury update: Fever superstar exits Sun game late

Shannopin Country Club's 17th hole features very unique green complex

The 17th hole at Shannopin Country Club is one of the most unique and most difficult par 3s in the Pittsburgh area. Shannopin Country Club was established in 1920, named after the Lenape tribe Chief Shannopin. Located just 10 miles north of Pittsburgh, Shannopin has one of the most unique and difficult par 3 holes in western Pennsylvania. The 17th hole plays 200 yards, downhill, and is guarded with several bunkers, but what makes the hole stand out is the green. "It's 42 yards from front to back," said Shannopin Country Club head golf professional Eric Teasdale. "At its widest point, it's only 10 yards wide. So the green slopes from back left to front right on both of those greens. It's kind of like you're hitting right into the green like that. It's 194 yards downhill, true yardage, not counting slope or anything. We can get it up to a little over 200 yards." The difficult 17th hole can make or break a lot of matches played at Shannopin. "Our 17th-18th hole is a very hard hole and they're matchbreakers for sure," Teasdale said. The tee shot on the 17th offers no real bailout area with out of bounds to the right and two bunkers guarding the front part of the green. Approach shots that miss to the right of the green will have a nearly 15 foot pitch up the hillside to contend with. "Any time that pin is in the back, we have very few individuals that hit it all the way onto the green," Teasdale said. Downhill putts on the slick surface will be hard to contend with and leaving yourself a tap-in par will be a big win. "Anytime you make a 3 on this hole, you're happy," Teasdale said.
