Security stepped up in Manipur to ensure farmers' safety

Imphal: With the farming season currently underway in Manipur, security measures have been significantly intensified across the state to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure safety of farmers.
A high-level Combined Headquarters (CHQ) meeting, chaired by the state security advisor, along with the chief secretary and the director general of police, and representatives from all security forces, recently reviewed the existing security arrangements. The meeting focused on enhancing coordination among forces and preventing recurrence of incidents similar to the recent violence, which was reported from Phubala in Bishnupur, where a farmer sustained a bullet injury.
Sources said the meeting discussed redeployment of central security forces in the vicinity of Phubala to bolster security arrangements.
Currently, Manipur Police personnel are strategically deployed in vulnerable farming areas, along both hill and valley sides, assisting the central security forces in agricultural zones.
Alert messages have been issued from the police headquarters to all district superintendents of police (SP), instructing them to immediately implement enhanced security protocols for ongoing farming and cultivation activities.

According to the orders issued, senior police officers will conduct personal visits to vulnerable areas to oversee security arrangements and identify agricultural zones that may require increased security surveillance.
Joint combing operations will continue on a regular basis in fringe areas, including deep areas inside the hills, to flush out any miscreants. Flying squads and Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have also been established by the administration.
Furthermore, several local coordination meetings are being held by the district administration and police with the public to discuss farming-related issues, including safe hours for agricultural activities. The public, particularly farmers, have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly inform the local police or security forces before proceeding to farming activities in vulnerable or sensitive areas.

Pune: Wednesday's sexual assault on a woman in Kondhwa by a man posing as a delivery agent has prompted society representatives in the city to discuss security tightening measures, including sending self-security awareness messages to residents. The man, posing as a courier delivery agent, entered the 22-year-old data scientist's 11th floor rented flat in a residential society in Kondhwa on Wednesday evening, sprayed some chemical on her face and allegedly raped her. Though police are verifying the delivery agents who had visited the society on Wednesday, Gig Workers Association president Keshav Kshirsagar said residents should close the doors "whenever a delivery person asks for anything and they need to go inside". He said the state govt must adopt the gig workers' Act to ensure that all delivery agents are registered and verified. "This also acts as a deterrent to crime. Rajendra Chutar, president of Baner Pashan Link Road Welfare Trust, said: "This plays an important role in providing security, especially for senior citizens. While we know what parcel is expected and can easily block unauthorised entry, the problem arises when children order something and we are not aware. Many times, senior citizens return parcels thinking they are fake, only to be told otherwise by the children who have ordered it. It is important for family members to keep each other informed such orders."

On Thursday, its ride came to a brief halt near Lalbagh when transport officials flagged it for allegedly dodging Karnataka's lifetime tax. Registered in Maharashtra, the Rs 7.5 crore SF90 Stradale had been operating in the city well past the one-year limit allowed for out-of-state vehicles. The owner, a businessman, coughed up Rs 1.4 crore in tax and penalty on the same day to avoid having the car impounded. The officer said they had briefed senior authorities about the situation, who directed them to seize the Ferrari if the owner failed to comply. "Following this, the owner agreed to pay the due tax," the official confirmed. The businessman operating across 55 locations in India had chosen to register the car in Maharashtra to benefit from the lower tax rate. "But the rules are clear," said the official. "If you use an out-of-state vehicle in Karnataka for more than a year, you are liable to pay lifetime tax here." This isn't the first time the RTO has taken action against luxury vehicle owners flouting tax norms. In recent years, authorities have launched multiple drives in Bengaluru targeting high-end cars avoiding local taxes. Gibbons smuggled from Bangkok seized
Chennai: Gibbons seem to be wildlife traffickers' latest favourite as customs sleuths thwarted their second bid in two weeks to smuggle them via Chennai airport from Thailand. On Tuesday, customs officers intercepted an Indian flyer and found the animals inside two pet bags concealed in checked-in luggage beneath chocolates and other food items. The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau officers, who identified the monkeys as an agile gibbon (hylobates agilis) and an eastern grey gibbon (hylobates funereus), provided suitable care. The monkeys were deported on the same flight back to Thailand, and the flyer was remanded in judicial custody. Customs sources said that the flyer was a carrier engaged by a smuggler, and further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the latter's identity. On June 30, customs officers secured a flyer at the domestic terminal at Chennai airport. He travelled from Dubai to Dhaka, then to Kolkata, and reached Chennai by an Indigo flight. About 409g of gold he had hidden in his rectum was seized. On Tuesday, a flyer from Singapore was secured for smuggling 150g of gold, and on Wednesday, another flyer from Dubai was caught with another 150g of gold.
