Pakistan establishes new missile force after India conflict, PM Sharif says
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the formation of the Rocket Force Command while addressing an Independence Day ceremony in Islamabad attended by senior military officials late on Wednesday (Aug 13).
"It will be equipped with modern technology and capable of striking the enemy from all directions," Sharif said at the ceremony, during which the deadly clash with India in May dominated official speeches and displays.
"It will improve our conventional war capabilities," he said, commending the military for its performance.
Pakistan and India fought an intense four-day conflict in May that killed more than 70 people on both sides in missile, drone and artillery fire, the worst clashes between the nuclear-armed neighbours since 1999.
Pakistan has sophisticated missile capabilities, some of which it deployed in May alongside J-10C Vigorous Dragon and JF-17 Thunder fighter jets.
Islamabad is boosting its military capabilities following the conflict, increasing defence spending by 20 percent in the current budget that was passed in June.
The government also announced that it was in discussions to acquire 40 new Chinese fighter jets and new air defence systems.
"After the recent conflict, the object of course is to further strengthen Pakistan's military capability and this is a part of that process," defence analyst Talat Masood, a former general, told AFP.
The May conflict was triggered by a deadly attack on tourists in India-administered Kashmir a month earlier that Delhi blamed on Islamabad. Pakistan denied the allegation.
Muslim-majority Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since their independence from British rule in 1947. Both claim the region in full and have fought two wars and several conflicts over its control. - AFP

On Thursday (Aug 14), a row of shops in Kepala Batas was forced to close early as Akmal led a 'flag inspection' rally targeting a hardware store where its owner, Feng Jin Zhen, was filmed holding the Malaysian flag upside down. Police cordoned off the area, while lawyers for Zaid attended to defend the owner from harassment. Akmal, dismissing Feng's explanation as accidental, branded the act 'traitorous' and urged supporters to join him in 'teaching' the shop owners how to hang the flag. Police are investigating under the Emblems and Names Act and related laws. Akmal gave his statement to police at the Dang Wangi IPD over last Thursday's Kepala Batas assembly. His lawyer said Akmal cooperated fully, answering about 80 questions. He is being investigated under the Sedition Act, the Penal Code (criminal intimidation), and the Communications and Multimedia Act. 'You liar': Elon Musk and Sam Altman's AI battle erupts on social media

On Monday night, Musk threatened to sue Apple, accusing the company of "unequivocal antitrust violations" for allegedly giving preferential treatment to OpenAI's ChatGPT, which currently holds the top spot on the US App Store. "Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1," Musk wrote. He added that his company, xAI, "will take immediate legal action." Altman, CEO of OpenAI – which he co-founded with Musk in 2015 – quickly fired back. "This is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like," Altman wrote, referencing a 2023 Platformer report detailing how Musk allegedly ordered changes to X's algorithm to boost his own visibility.
