Ludhiana: Locals await meter connections for months

Residents across the city are at their wit's end as new electricity connections and load extensions remain pending for months, despite them having deposited the required charges months ago. Consumers said that even after completing all formalities, the power department has not released their connections, causing unnecessary delay and inconvenience. Consumers say that even after completing all formalities, the power department has not released their connections. (HT Photo) Firoza Praveen, a resident of Kundanpuri, said,' I applied for a new meter connection at Aggar Nagar division in April. Even after making a payment of a whopping ₹25,017, I am making rounds of the department to get my work done.' Similarly, Manish Sharma, resident of New Chander Nagar said, 'In March, I have applied for a load extension from 1 kilowatt to 7 kilowatt. I have also made a payment of ₹14,180. Despite these, it has been over five months, they have not felicitated the process. Every work, I need to take a leave from my office but the delays continue.' Gurpreet Mehdoodan, divisional president of the Punjab State Electricity Board Employees Federation, said, 'Significant delays in electricity-related tasks are persistent across Ludhiana city, with residents typically facing waits of around four months. After submitting an application, the department takes time to release a serial number due to glitches in the online portal, which further adds to the delay.' Mehdoodan added that the surge in applications following the government's waiver of NOC requirements for small plot holders, combined with staff shortages, has further compounded the problem. 'From December to March, routine applications increased by over 60%, but the department lacked enough staff to cater to these applications request ,' he said. At present, the department is relying on its outsourced workers to install electricity meters who are already grappled with fault repairs and maintenance duties. As a result, it gets difficult to managed these installations, he added. Additionally, senior officials pointed to the rise in double or triple meters in single households following the state government's free 600 unit scheme as another factor contributing to delays. With the growing use of cooling appliances, many consumers are now requesting load extensions from 1 KW to 3 KW, adding to the department's workload, they added. When contacted, chief engineer Jagdev Hans assured that efforts are underway to clear the backlog. 'We are working to process applications as quickly as possible. The delays largely stem from illegal meter scam unearthed in Aggar Nagar division, prompting JEs who look after these tasks to go on strike. Now, the process is back on track,' he said.

Deadline of tax settlement scheme extended again

Ludhiana: The deadline for the one-time settlement scheme for property tax dues has been extended for the third time, allowing residents to pay their outstanding dues without any interest and penalty until the end of August. The civic body has so far collected Rs 19 crore from outstanding dues under this scheme. However, against the annual property tax target of Rs 160 crore for this fiscal, the MC officials have collected Rs 43 crore until now. The officials claimed they will increase the pace of recovery of dues in the coming month when people clear the tax for this fiscal to avail of a 10% rebate. The PGs and migrant quarters are on the radar of the MC teams, as checking is ongoing in some areas to catch hold of the defaulters. The OTS was launched on May 15, and the defaulters were given time until July 31 to pay up. The deadline was extended to Aug 15 and now to August 31. The officials claimed they have sent teams for checking in areas like BRS Nagar, Rajguru Nagar, and the backyard of the DC office complex, where commercial activities have increased. Many people have set up PGs in their households, but they have not paid commercial tax to the civic body for many years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo The officials claimed that in the coming days, there will be more tax generation as current year tax payments will also be received. By the end of September, they expect the total tax collection to cross Rs 100 crore. MC superintendent Vivek Verma said, "The govt is giving a chance to the defaulters to clear their dues without any interest and penalty, and it the payment deadline has been extended for the third time. Residents should make the best use of it because once the OTS deadline ends, we will impose the penalty and interest rate." Meanwhile, senior deputy mayor Rakesh Prashar claimed that with OTS, the MC is collecting several pending dues from the defaulters, and now people who never came to clear their dues will come on MC records. Ward defence committee meetings baffle MC staff As CM Bhagwant Mann launched a drive to form ward defence committees in 95 wards of the city, the MC staff is also deputed in these committees. The MC officials claimed they are told to conduct ward-level meetings and create groups so that these committees could be notified by the govt and proper ID cards should be issued to them. These residents will then take care of the drugs awareness programmes in the colonies and stage nukkad nataks. They will take care of drug-related activities in the colonies and inform police. MC officials claimed they are unsure how they will manage these meetings, especially when they need to focus on tax collection and, moreover, they know nothing about drugs. Adobe's new Acrobat Studio places your PDFs and AI assistants in one place

Adobe is introducing a new platform that weaves together Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Express and artificial intelligence (AI) automation in a single window, the idea being to consolidate PDF documents, web pages and multiple tools into a hub. Adobe envisions Acrobat Studio, which also spawns its own subscription, as a collective that allows users to find value from creating specific workplaces where PDFs form the foundation of conversational knowledge hubs, with customisable AI Assistants to draw information, answers or recommendations alongside the company's Express creativity platform, PDF management tools, and the Firefly AI powered image and video generation options. Official image. Acrobat Studio will be priced at $24.99 per month (or ₹1,357 in India) for individuals and $29.99/month for teams (that's priced at ₹2,969 per license, in India). Adobe calls this as 'early access pricing', and it isn't clear for now if this will increase after this offer ends on October 31. This now sits alongside Acrobat Standard ($12.99 per month) and Acrobat Pro ($19.99 per month), and the exclusive functionality includes an Acrobat AI Assistant as well. Adobe says anyone who is currently subscribed to any of these plans, can upgrade. There are specific use-cases that may draw value from the Acrobat Studio subscription, with a proposition for students to piece together their notes into study guides and also able to quickly generate precise citations from their sources. Another possible use case could be relevant for travellers, who may be able to draw upon Acrobat Studio to collect location reviews, itineraries or recommendations and have AI Assistants help them plan the vacation. Or use Express tools to transform data into infographics or visual assets. 'Acrobat Studio is the place where your best work comes together, uniting the productivity of Acrobat, the creative power of Adobe Express and the value of AI to empower you to work smarter and faster. We're reinventing PDF for modern work, so whatever you need to get done, you can do that with Acrobat,' says Abhigyan Modi, senior vice president, Document Product Group at Adobe, in a briefing of which HT was a part. PDF Spaces will also allow users to also add specific websites and webpages to the collection of files and documents, for more information. Adobe says that users will have the flexibility to assign AI Assistants in PDF Spaces with specific roles, such as that of an instructor, or analyst, or entertainer, which will form the baseline personality for how they collate and present information, answer user questions and deploy reasoning to suggest further aspects worth exploring. Sharing should be easy too, the company promises, insisting entire PDF Spaces, including personalised AI Assistants, can be shared with colleagues, customers and classmates. At this time, Acrobat Studio is available only in English, worldwide. Adobe's Acrobat Studio and its focused proposition competes, in varying degrees, with Google's NotebookLM that can also behave as a virtual assistant capable of summarising, explaining, and answering questions based on uploaded documents (these can be PDFs, Docs, Slides, Microsoft 365 files, or web pages), and also includes a 'podcast-style' Audio Overview features. While Google unlocks NotebookLM with the entry spec AI Pro plan ₹1,950 per month), you'll need the top-tier AI Ultra plan ( ₹24,500 per month) to unlock higher usage limits. If the focus is on just writing and assistance with information, OpenAI's ChatGPT Canvas and Google Gemini Canvas also have areas of strength with wider document support and Google Docs sync respectively. It must be noted that the Canvas propositions from Google and OpenAI are more focused on coding tasks as well, something Adobe isn't promising.
