His Highness Sheikh Hamed inaugurates Khalifa University Research and Innovation Exhibition 2025

Abu Dhabi-UAE: His Highness Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Khalifa University of Science and Technology, today inaugurated the Khalifa University Research and Innovation Exhibition 2025, which featured more than 100 projects, as part of 'UAE Innovates 2025.'
His Highness Sheikh Hamed was accompanied by H.E. Staff Major General Pilot Faris Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Abu Dhabi Police Commander-in-Chief, H.E. Sarah Musallam, Chairperson of the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), Hassan Ahmed Al Hosani, CEO, Bayanat, H.E. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security for the UAE Government, Major General Thani Butti Al Shamsi, Director of Saif Bin Zayed Academy for Police and Security Sciences, H.E. Homaid Al Shimmari, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Khalifa University, and H.E. Prof. Ebrahim Al Hajri, President, Khalifa University.
His Highness Sheikh Hamed was briefed about the innovative projects and technology solutions that were distributed across three zones such as research, industry applications, and startups under the Khalifa University Enterprises Company (KUEC), while attending a pitching session for a startup focusing on neuromorphic technology.
Stakeholders from government, private sector, academic, industry, and international partners interacted with Khalifa University researchers at the three themed demonstration zones, with projects including Lunar Rover, Kumrah AI, Emirati Reference Genome Project (ERGP), 6U CubeSat, Golde, Frugal 3D-Bioprinter, Biocatalysis on chip platform, Study of Polar Sea Ice, SAVE Software, and Graphene based hydrogen tank filament winding.
Industry applications project themes covered Healthy Longevity, Energy Transition, Pervasive Digitalization, Sustainable Secure Society and Advanced Materials & Manufacturing/ Health. These included Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), Food Pricing Dynamics, AgriTech 4 for viable and sustainable farming in the UAE, 3D Printed Solar Absorber, Vision-Based Flare Analytics, and The Biomedical Science Discovery (BISDI) Program.
Also on display were Development of numerical tools for the origin and the magnitude of RADioactive release Identification (Rad-ID), a study on Towards Enhanced Nuclear Reactor Safety, LLMs for Utility Sector Customers & Anomaly Detection for Utility Meters, Mangrove-mimicked Solar Desalination Device, fast chargers for electric vehicles, The Cancer Multi-Omics Atlas: A Platform for Precision Oncology, and IgenRare: AI Assistant Tool for Rare Genetic Diseases for early diagnoses and management.

Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has been honoured with the 'Innovate for Impact' award in the Smart Home/Cities category at the Artificial Intelligence for the Public Good Summit, organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations' specialised agency for digital technologies. The award recognises the Authority's pioneering efforts in applying artificial intelligence to cultural heritage preservation through the project 'AI– Enhanced Detection and Prediction at Saruq Al Hadid Archaeological Site.' Selected as one of the winning use cases at the summit, the Saruq Al-Hadid initiative has been selected for inclusion in ITU's final report and was showcased during the session 'Innovation for Impact: Winning Case Studies'. Developed in collaboration with Khalifa University of Science and Technology, the project harnesses Remote sensing technology, AI Applications, and Geophysical Survey technology such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), magnetic surveys, and high-precision mapping to explore one of the region's most significant Iron Age sites. The research has led to the identification of over 2500 anomalies indicate the possibility of the presence of artifacts and features of archaeological significance. The ITU award spotlights Dubai Culture's leadership in integrating innovation within the cultural sector and its active contribution to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The recognition also aligns with the Authority's broader mission to empower talent, champion creative innovation, and position Dubai as a global capital of culture and knowledge. 'Receiving this award affirms our commitment to adopting forward-thinking technologies to preserve and promote our cultural heritage,' said Hala Badri, Director General of Dubai Culture. 'By applying AI and other non-invasive methods, we not only safeguard the past but also strengthen Dubai's cultural voice on the international stage.' 16 July 2025 22:43 SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)Driven by the need to improve nuclear reactor safety, an Emirati researcher is focusing her efforts on developing accident-tolerant fuels (ATFs).PhD researcher Ghadeer Hegab Mohamed from the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department at Khalifa University of Science and Technology, under the supervision of Prof. Akram AlFantazi, is working on the development of special chromium coating for fuel coating helps the rods withstand extreme conditions during accidents, using advanced testing methods to ensure better protection and project, titled "Systematic Fuel Performance Analysis of Accident Tolerant Fuels (Development of Cr-Coated Cladding and Evaluation of its Applicability)," is funded and conducted within the Emirates Nuclear Technology Centre (ENTC) at the University."Zircaloy-based cladding, which is widely used in pressurised water reactors, reacts with steam at high temperatures-producing dangerous levels of hydrogen and causing core damage during severe accidents," she said."The chromium-coated version offers a practical, near-term solution by increasing resistance to oxidation while still fitting within current manufacturing and licensing systems."To achieve this, she developed a new method to coat the inside and outside of the fuel rod casing with chromium, making it stronger and more resistant to damage during accidents. The team also added a middle layer to help the coating stick better and protect the rods more effectively at high temperatures."This single-step process uses environmentally friendly materials to create an even coating," she chromium-coated cladding provides better resistance to high-temperature damage, gives more time to respond in emergencies, and stays strong under pressure, she noted, adding that "it works with current reactor designs, so there's no need for expensive system changes."To test the coating, she used both lab experiments and computer the lab, her team used advanced imaging tools to closely examine the coating's surface and structure, making sure it was strong, even, and also carried out high-temperature tests to see how well the coating resists damage, along with trials to check how strongly it sticks to the fuel rod on the digital side, her team used computer tools to simulate how the fuel behaves in different conditions-like how it reacts inside the reactor, how heat and fluids move around it, and what might happen during an impact of this research could be transformative. "It can greatly enhance nuclear reactor safety by reducing hydrogen buildup, slowing down core damage during accidents, and enabling more efficient fuel use," she team is continuing high-temperature tests to check oxidation resistance and how well the coating sticks. "We also plan to collaborate with international research reactors to test how the material performs under actual radiation. Our computer simulations will help confirm how it behaves inside a working reactor." "The successful implementation of this research aligns with the UAE's vision for a sustainable and safe nuclear energy programme."

1 July 2025 18:16 ABU DHABI (WAM) Khalifa University of Science and Technology announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) to cooperate across a range of scientific, academic, and technical MoU was signed by the Director-General of the National Centre of Meteorology and Permanent Representative of the UAE with World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Dr. Abdullah Ahmed Al Mandous, and the President of Khalifa University, Professor Ebrahim Al MoU facilitates collaboration in joint research, knowledge exchange, and the development of future initiatives aligned with mutual interests and national Al Hajri said, 'Khalifa University is proud to continue playing a key role in national initiatives that combine academic excellence with real-world impact. Researchers from Khalifa University have actively participated in NCM-led workshops, and both entities are currently co-developing proposals that apply drone-based systems to environmental and meteorological research.
