Aldi Vs Walmart: Which Grocery Store Is Actually Cheaper?

Aldi Vs Walmart: Which Grocery Store Is Actually Cheaper?

Yahoo24-03-2025
In consumers' ongoing battle to save money in the face of skyrocketing inflation, every dollar counts. Naturally, you want to buy food where you stand to get the best bargains, which begs the question of which grocer provides the best bang for your buck. Two common answers are Walmart and Aldi, both of which are generally regarded as great destinations for the dollar-conscious. Unlike Erewhon, the most expensive grocery store in America, Walmart and Aldi appeal to customers who are looking for deals. It may surprise you to know that, in every metric that counts, Aldi wins.
There's a reason we crowned Aldi as the cheapest grocery store in America. Even when stacked up against a bargain-heavy supermarket like Walmart, Aldi continually delivers better prices. Granted, your mileage may vary based on, for example, where you live, seasonal availability of SKUs, willingness to clip coupons or use savings apps, and so on. But when it comes to running to the store for a few items, Aldi has your back.

Aldi's lack of brand-name products is by design. You save more money when it stocks the shelves predominantly with its own private labels. Take, for instance, frozen pizza — a huge favorite with teenagers and bachelors alike. Walmart touts a 28-ounce Great Value Rising Crust Pepperoni Pizza for $4.97, which is a great deal compared to big brands. Aldi, however, sells its Mama Cozzi's Pizza Kitchen Pepperoni Rising Crust Pizza for $4.65 -- and at 30 ounces, it's a tiny bit heartier.
Aldi's private labels shine in places that Walmart doesn't have a direct off-brand competitor for, too. Looking for a carton of ready-to-drink caramel macchiato-flavored iced coffee? Aldi has you covered with 64 scrumptious ounces of its Barissimo brand coffee for $4.15. Walmart only has the International Delights brand, which is $4.58 for 64 ounces. For one more example of that phenomenon in effect, let's examine four-packs of vanilla protein shakes. Walmart sells the popular Premier Protein brand for $9.58 and doesn't have a generic equivalent for sale. Aldi, however, comes in clutch with its private Elevation brand for $7.39, an eye-popping difference in savings.
Keep in mind that Aldi has a much smaller selection than Walmart, which means you may not be able to find everything on your list at Aldi. When there's a 1:1 comparison to make between the two grocers, however, Aldi is a better bet.

Walmart gives employees extra savings on groceries with expanded discount

Walmart has expanded its discount program for employees, offering employees discounts on all groceries year-round versus discounts on specific items during the holiday season. In a memo the company sent out to associates on Aug. 13, the company said the change means employees get 10% off all food categories — including dairy, frozen, dry grocery, meat and seafood — as well as general merchandise and fashion. 'With this update, the associate discount now covers 95% of regularly priced items across the store,' the company said in the memo obtained by USA TODAY via email. Walmart's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Kieran Shanahan said in a video shared to LinkedIn that the company has listened to employees. 'We know the impact this discount has for so many associates and their families,' he said. 'You shared your thoughts and we've listened … Please keep the feedback coming on how we can make the benefits we offer even better.' Expanding the discount was one of their most requested changes, the company said in the memo. What's different about this expansion? Walmart employees receive Walmart Discount Cards after their first 90 days with the company, and if individuals work for the company for more than 20 years, they get an indefinite discount, the company said in the memo. According to the company, the discount card was first launched more than 50 years ago. The discount previously included a 10% discount on all fresh produce, most general merchandise, and a discount on items during the holiday season. Now, they'll pay lower prices for nearly all food sold at Walmart stores, including milk, bread, and meat, the company told USA TODAY on Aug. 14. The company also says the discount goes into effect immediately. More retail news: Amazon Prime members can now get same-day groceries for free. Here's how. Cramer: Amazon's deeper push into grocery creates a 'new narrative' for the company

CNBC's Jim Cramer said Thursday that Amazon 's deeper push into the grocery business is creating a "new narrative" for the company as it threatens to disrupt incumbents like Walmart . Amazon announced Wednesday that Prime members in more than 1,000 cities and towns can now get free same-day delivery on fresh groceries for orders over $25. The e-commerce and cloud giant plans to more than double that reach by year-end, with further expansion slated for 2026. Cramer called it the "Amazon factor" — suggesting the company's new push into same-day delivery of produce, dairy, and frozen food alongside household items helps solidify it as the ultimate one-stop shop for consumers. "You're going to get your food. You're going to get your drugs. It's going to come to your house," he said. "It's a whole new world and Amazon's got it." Wednesday's move, billed by Amazon as "one of the most significant grocery expansions" in its history, is seen by the market as a material escalation in the online grocery battle. Amazon stock advanced 1.4% on the announcement and was up another 1.9% on Thursday. Shares of Walmart and Target , which use their physical stores to service online orders of fresh groceries, were under pressure for a second straight session on Thursday. Delivery competitors fared much worse. Instacart and DoorDash were both down big again Thursday after sinking 11.5% and 3.8%, respectively, on Wednesday. Club stock Costco also faltered Wednesday but was steadier Thursday. Cramer said Wednesday Costco should never have been down on the Amazon news because the retailer is not in the same business. Costco is a "price business, a volume business," he said. Amazon has been able to expand its grocery offering because it keeps making same-day delivery more efficient. It has "reduced the average distance packages travel by 12% and lowered handling touches per unit by nearly 15%," said Amazon CEO Andy Jassy during the company's post-earnings conference call on July 31. Jassy cited strategic positioning of the company's fulfillment centers and the ability to send more items in each order, which resulted in fewer packages. "These improvements are making the network faster and structurally more efficient," the CEO added. That delivery speed has been driving customers to buy everyday items like cleaning supplies, vitamins, and personal care products online instead of making the trip to the grocery store. Last quarter, Everyday Essentials' growth outpaced the rest of the business globally and represented one out of every three units sold. By leveraging its large and loyal Prime customer base and increasingly efficient delivery speeds, it wouldn't be surprising if Amazon takes market share from top grocery players. At the same time, though, the impact across the industry may take time to unfold. We continue to maintain our buy-equivalent 1 rating on Amazon shares and a $250 price target.
