Sumler first crossed paths with the group in 1985 when he was performing with his own band, Power Pac. He looked back on the experience of meeting Kool & the Gang in a 2018 interview with Kelly Talk Show when he said that 'One of the Kool & the Gang security guys caught our act in the club in Chicago and we became friends.'
He continued to travel with the group as their stylist-choreographer, but 'once they saw that I could do some other things, they said we need to have you onstage.' That's when Sumler joined the 'Get Down on It' hitmakers as their hype man; he went on to provide background vocals for their music.
Kool & the Gang has earned three Grammy nominations and one win in 1979 for album of the year for their work on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. They received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2015 and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year.

Kaytranada Returns With New Album ‘Ain't No Damn Way'
For the second summer in a row, Haitian-Canadian producer Kaytranada is getting people dancing with a new studio album. The Grammy-winning DJ has released his fourth album Ain't No Damn Way!, the follow-up to last year's Timeless. Kaytranada gave little warning for the release, announcing the LP earlier this week and dropping lead single 'Space Invader' shortly thereafter. Like with Timeless, Kaytranada plays with a wide range of sounds and rhythms on the project, from more upbeat tracks like 'Championship' and 'Don't Worry Babe / I Got U Babe' to laid-back offerings like 'Things' and 'Shine Your Light For We.' He even samples TLC's 'Let's Do It Again' on closing track 'Do It! (Again!).' In recent years, Kaytranada has fully stepped into his power, unafraid to create beats or make musical tweaks that he feel might not resonate with listeners or collaborators. 'I always used to be very shy in the studio and sometimes let the artists just do their thing because I didn't want to correct them or anything. It took me a while to understand, OK, I got to be the one that says 'Do it like this,'" he told Rolling Stone last year. "I don't have a leader mentality. I'm learning to do that now.' Now, Kaytranada is 'trying to make Grammy-winning albums.' 'I just want to be remembered as one of the greats in terms of producing, not only dance and electronic but also just production in general,' he told Billboard. Kaytranada hits the road with Justice on a co-headlining tour across North America this fall. It all kicks off Oct. 16 in Vancouver and wraps up Nov. 16 in Miami. The news comes a month after the soap star shared with fans in a July 17 news release that he had been diagnosed with cancer. "While he remains hopeful and is working closely with his medical team on a treatment plan, this is a challenging time for Tristan and his family," the statement read. "As they face both the emotional and physical burdens that come with this diagnosis, the family kindly asks for privacy and understanding." The release said that Rogers "sends love to his fans" and that their support "means more to him now than ever." Rogers is survived by his wife of 30 years, Teresa Parkerson, and their two adult children, daughter Sara and son Cale. Rogers' path to becoming a daytime staple Rogers, who was born in Melbourne, Australia, cut his teeth as a soap actor in the 1970s with roles on the Australian TV series "Number 96," "The Box" and "Bellbird." The budding actor traded the Down Under for the fictional town of Port Charles, New York, when he joined the cast of "General Hospital" in December 1980, playing super spy Scorpio. Rogers went on to enjoy a 12-year stint on the long-running drama before departing the series in 1992. He was nominated for two Soap Opera Digest Awards during his initial "GH" tenure, including a 1986 nod for outstanding daytime actor in a leading role. Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Actor Tristan Rogers died Friday at age 79. ABC 7 in California confirmed with Rogers' manager, Meryl Soodak, and The Hollywood Reporter via a statement from General Hospital Executive Producer Frank Valentini. Rogers played Robert Scorpio on the soap opera since 1980. He was introduced as a spy for the fictional World Security Bureau. His most recent appearance was last year, with Scorpio now the District Attorney of Port Charles. He went public with his battle with lung cancer in July. Soodak told ABC 7 Rogers had never smoked. The Melbourne-born Rogers also appeared in The Young and the Restless, Studio City and The Bold and the Beautiful.
