Most people visit Frozen Head State Park in East Tennessee for the peaceful trails, remote campsites, and sweeping views of the Cumberland Mountains. They have no idea that tucked deep in the misty backcountry is one of the most brutal, elusive, and bizarre ultramarathons on the planet: the Barkley Marathons.
And in 2024, something extraordinary happened.
The First Woman in History to Complete the Barkley Marathons
Jasmin Paris, a 40-year-old mother of two from Great Britain, became the first woman ever to complete the Barkley — all five grueling loops — within the punishing 60-hour time limit. She crossed the finish line in 59:58:21, joining an elite club of 20 finishers in the race's nearly 40-year history, and doing it with just 99 seconds to spare.

What Exactly are the Barkley Marathons?
The race itself is part myth, part madness. Dreamed up in 1986 by Gary 'Lazarus Lake' Cantrell and his friend Karl 'Raw Dog' Henn, the Barkley began as a darkly comedic response to a failed prison escape. When James Earl Ray — the man who assassinated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — fled the nearby Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in 1977, he only managed about eight-and-a-half miles in nearly 55 hours before being caught. Laz joked he could do at least 100 miles — and so, the Barkley was born.
Pin

Since then, more than 1,000 people have attempted the race. Most don't make it past the first loop.
Why? The Barkley is five loops of unmarked trail over near-impossible terrain with about 60,000 feet of climbing (roughly equivalent to summiting Everest twice). There are no aid stations, no GPS devices allowed, and no cheering crowds. Just a compass, a map, and a touch of madness. To prove they've completed a loop, runners must rip a page from a hidden book at each checkpoint — books planted by Laz in twisted, hard-to-reach places across the forest.
Pin
Even getting into the race is cryptic. There's no official website or signup form. Hopefuls must figure out the secret application process, pay a $1.60 entry fee, and bring whatever strange item Laz demands that year — from flannel shirts to a pack of Camels. Newcomers must also bring a license plate from their home state or country, which is nailed to the infamous 'Tree of Shame.'
Pin
Into this strange, punishing world stepped soft-spoken and humble, Jasmin Paris.
Who is Jasmin Paris?
Paris lives just south of Edinburgh, where she balances a career as a veterinarian while raising two young kids. She grew up between the Peak District in England and the Šumava National Park in Czechia, and didn't take up running seriously until her twenties, when a colleague talked her into a local fell race. Fourteen years later, she's a veteran of some of the most grueling endurance events on earth.
In 2019, Paris won the 268-mile Montane Spine Race outright, shattering the course record by over 12 hours. She had given birth just 14 months earlier — and famously stopped during the race to pump milk for her infant daughter.
Paris flew under the radar heading into the 2024 Barkley, but that didn't last long. She quietly ticked off each loop, and as the clock wound down on her final lap, a crowd gathered at the yellow gate — the race's iconic finish line — holding their breath.
With grit, humility, and just 99 seconds left on the clock, Jasmin Paris didn't just finish the Barkley. She rewrote its story.
About Frozen Head State Park
Frozen Head State Park spans more than 24,000 acres of pristine, rugged wilderness. It's named for a 3,324-foot peak that's often iced over in the winter, and it's a haven for hikers, campers, and nature lovers. The park offers 50 miles of trails, scenic overlooks, and a sense of raw mountain solitude that feels untouched — the perfect setting for a race that seems designed to break the human spirit.
But now, it's also the backdrop of one of the most inspiring feats in ultrarunning history.

Cheap Things to Do in Gatlinburg, TN

Share with your friends! Pinterest LinkedIn Email Flipboard Reddit Dubbed 'the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains,' Gatlinburg, TN, is known for its scenic beauty, cozy cabins, and small-town charm — but you don't need an over-the-top budget to experience it. Whether you're looking for outdoor fun or just need a change of pace, this Southern town offers unforgettable moments that won't drain your wallet. From free attractions to a few insider money-saving tips, here's how to make the most of your next Smoky Mountain getaway! Pro Tips for Planning As you begin to map out your adventures, exploring the Deals page on Gatlinburg's website is a great place to start. The extensive list highlights discounts available at local restaurants, hotels, and attractions, making planning a breeze. You'll also want to peruse Gatlinburg's calendar of free events. Annual favorites include the Fourth of July Midnight Parade & Fireworks, Springfest, Smoky Mountain Tunes & Tales, and the Gatlinburg Farmers' Market. Embrace the Great Outdoors It's no secret that Gatlinburg offers some of the most breathtaking mountain views in the country. While Great Smoky Mountains National Park requires a small parking fee for visits longer than 15 minutes, entry to the park is still completely free. Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail offers trailheads to not one, but two cascading waterfalls. If you're looking for a hike that's more on the challenging side, take the 5.4-mile loop to Rainbow Falls. While it includes a steep ascent, you're rewarded with spectacular views — the highest single-drop waterfall in the park, standing 80 feet tall. Meanwhile, the Trillium Gap Trail leads to Grotto Falls, a 25-foot waterfall that invites you to walk behind the falls for a one-of-a-kind perspective. It's the perfect spot to find a moment of serene escape. Pin Cades Cove is another must-visit location within the park. Ideal for a scenic afternoon drive, the 11-mile loop includes panoramic mountain views. Plus, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for wildlife sightings. If you want to explore Cades Cove on foot, take the five-mile round-trip journey to Abrams Falls. The moderately challenging hike leads to a 20-foot waterfall. Ride the Gatlinburg Trolley A convenient (and completely free!) way to explore the city, the Gatlinburg Trolley operates 365 days a year. With an easy hop-on, hop-off system, the trolley stops at some of Gatlinburg's most notable attractions, including Ripley's Believe It or Not!, Anakeesta, and Gatlinburg SkyPark. SB Tip: View routes and stop locations in real time using the Gatlinburg Trolley locator. Pin Take A Stroll Along The Parkway Once you hop off the trolley in Gatlinburg's bustling Downtown Parkway, stroll along the streets for some window shopping (or actual shopping if your budget allows!). Popular shops include The Silver Tree, Zi Olive, and Smoky Mountain Soaps. More than just a place to browse boutiques and soak in even more mountain views, this vibrant area of town also offers plenty of photo ops, thanks to its handful of colorful street murals and statues. Pin If you've worked up an appetite, the Parkway is also home to plenty of budget-friendly eateries, whether you need a quick bite or a full-on meal. Standouts include the Sun Diner and Blue Moose Burger & Wings. And, for a sweet treat, don't forget to stop by The Donut Friar. Affordable Adventures If you want to explore some of Gatlinburg's top attractions, we've got some insider tips on how to save on admission. Anakeesta visitors receive a discount when they purchase advance tickets online — prices start at $34.99 for adults and $22.99 for children. Your ticket includes unlimited 'chondola' rides, plus access to Vista Gardens, the TreeTop Skywalk, the AnaVista Observation Tower, and more. Similarly, you'll save money if you purchase your SkyPark tickets at least three days in advance. As one of the most visited attractions in Gatlinburg, the park is home to the longest pedestrian bridge in the U.S. The famous SkyBridge stands 140 feet above ground and is 680 feet long. SB Tip: Many attractions offer combo packages, which can include discounted rates at local restaurants, retail shops, or other experiences. Be sure to ask an attraction ticket counter employee for more information. Pin This article is sponsored by the Gatlinburg Convention & Visitors Bureau. Memphis's Newest Old Hotel: A First Look Inside Hotel Pontotoc

Share with your friends! Pinterest LinkedIn Email Flipboard Reddit Oh, if the walls of Hotel Pontotoc could talk … Located between South Main and Front Street, the historic hotel has been a Downtown Memphis staple for more than a century, living multiple lives as a bordello, a Turkish bathhouse, a dive bar, a private residence, and a recording studio. After years of neglect and a meticulous recent restoration by local developers, the hotel will come full circle when it reopens this summer as a European-style boutique hotel, offering guests a combination of modern luxury and vintage charm. 'The fact that it has survived nearly untouched for 119 years is amazing,' says General Manager Norbert Mede. 'It's like a fly caught in amber — it never got repurposed or lost its character like so many other properties.' Take a closer look at the storied past of Hotel Pontotoc, and get a sneak peek at its newest iteration! Pin A Historic Gem Built in 1906 near Central Station, Hotel Pontotoc originally catered to railway and riverboat travelers. With 18 bedrooms and nine bathrooms, the small hotel was known for its lavish Turkish baths. By the 1920s, it had morphed into a popular bordello with a reputation for luxury and discretion. In 1929, Greek businessman Dionysos (Dan) Touliatos bought the property, turning it into a family hotel, where he resided with his wife and children. Pin Under his ownership, the hotel became a social hub for members of the Greek community and hosted many lively parties. It also drew actors and vaudeville performers from the nearby Orpheum Theatre. One of Hotel Pontotoc's most illustrious guests was Mexican artist Dionicio Rodriguez, who lived in the hotel in the 1930s while commissioned to work on Crystal Shrine Grotto at Memorial Park Gardens — a handmade cavern made of rock quartz crystal and semiprecious stones. Pin In 1958, George Sr., the eldest son of the Touliatos family, founded Front Street Theatre, which put on professional theatrical productions and attracted notable actors. While these stars may not have stayed at Hotel Pontotoc, the hotel was intertwined in the city's cultural development. There is even a rumor that Elvis visited the hotel, though there's no evidence to prove it. The Touliatos sold Hotel Pontotoc after business declined in the late 1960s, and it enjoyed a brief stint as a nightclub in 1979 before it was purchased by local preservationists Leigh and Terry Davis in the early 1980s. They renovated the building, converting the basement into a recording studio and hosting memorable parties. In 2022, partners Tony Kuhn and Joseph Lewis — Memphians with a heart for historic downtown properties — acquired the building, which had fallen into disrepair. They embarked on a multimillion-dollar project to restore Hotel Pontotoc to its former glory. Pin Pin A Second Act Despite the hotel's deterioration in recent years, 'the bones of it were in great condition,' Norbert says. 'The renovation is a wink and a nod to its past but with modern upgrades and amenities.' The hotel's footprint is the same, with a bar on the lower basement level and guest rooms on the top two floors. But the original 17 rooms have been downsized to 10, including one grand suite, three regular suites, one ADA suite, and three studio-style rooms. Pin Each room has a different theme, but they all pay tribute to the past with their restored wood floors, exposed plaster walls, transom windows, and repurposed doors featuring original room numbers and antique knobs. Bathrooms contain vintage sink fixtures and high-tank toilets with pull chains for a nostalgic touch. Pin While the hotel is full of contemporary comforts, its vibe is intimate, and its design 'is like a timeline of its history,' Norbert says. The aesthetic is brimming with mid-century modern furnishings, rich wall coverings in deep blues and greens, and relics from its early life, which are showcased. 'We found a red ammunition bomb that we are going to suspend from the ceiling, and an old organ that we cleaned up to put in our lobby,' Norbert shares. Developers also revamped the hotel's entrance, repairing its signature awnings and restoring its iconic sign, a mainstay since it opened. Pin Drinks at The Dame Adding to the hotel's allure is The Dame, an upscale cocktail lounge and wine bar on the ground floor. The bar will serve a curated selection of premium bourbon, whiskey, tequila, and wine, along with small plates and local beers on tap. The menu will pay homage to the space's previous incarnation as a recording studio. 'We will have three tiers of wines: top 40 hits (recognizable wines), B sides (less recognizable wines), and lost tracks (wines that are unique or off the beaten path),' Norbert explains. Pin If you're craving a bit of nature, head to the hotel's landscaped garden, which can accommodate up to 75 people. It also makes an excellent spot for weddings and other special events. With that in mind, Norbert hopes to see Hotel Pontotoc return to its roots — as a gathering place for both locals and tourists. Events in the works include live music on Friday nights, plus themed nights like Whiskey Club Sundays, Tequila Tuesdays, Wine Wednesdays, and more. 'We want our guests to feel like this is a home away from home,' says Norbert, 'and not just those outside of Memphis, but also Memphians who come downtown for a show, a concert, or a Grizzlies game.' Pin Plan Your Stay Located just minutes from Beale Street, the Orpheum, the Blues Hall of Fame, and the Civil Rights Museum (among other Memphis hot spots), Hotel Pontotoc is open for booking at Nightly rates range from $250 to $650, with a 15% off promotion for those who book a two-night stay before August 1. Guests check in online and will receive an access code to the building, along with a complimentary continental breakfast and Wi-Fi.
