UNF poll creates debate about possible beaches split from Duval County

For some beaches residents, the question of whether the Atlantic, Jacksonville, and Neptune beaches should form their own county separate from Duval is a complex one without a clear answer. 'It'd be tricky separating everything, getting your own police department – or, we have our own - fire department, things like that,' Atlantic Beach resident Mary Cloutier acknowledged Tuesday. That complexity is shown in the results of a new University of North Florida public opinion poll, which found Duval voters deadlocked on the debate, with 48% for the separation of the beaches and Duval and 48% against. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< However, Jacksonville City Councilman Rory Diamond, who represents Jacksonville's beaches communities, says those results may be unreliable, skewed by the opinions of voters not living in or representing the beaches cities at large. 'Jacksonville says [they're] 50-50 but the beaches would love to be gone,' Diamond argued Tuesday. 'There's a huge pipeline of taxpayer cash that comes here to Downtown [Jacksonville], and the people at the beaches get no benefit from it. They don't want skyways to nowhere, they don't care about all this stuff. But they have to pay for it. So, if the beaches weren't part of Jacksonville, they'd have the best school district in the country, they would have the lowest taxes and high-quality city services, it'd be great.' In a statement sent to Action News Jax, however, Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan's office said, 'Consolidated government has worked for our community since 1968. This idea has come up many times over the years, yet no one has been able to truly show how it would make sense for any of the communities involved.' Nonetheless, many residents Action News Jax spoke with at the beaches Tuesday said they feel it could be time for a change. 'We have our interests. We're better able to develop our own solutions to the problems,' argued beaches resident John Hayes. 'I really did always think that the beaches was a different county than Duval county,' beaches native Tara Anthony-Robertson added. 'But once I moved Downtown, I saw that it was all Duval county. So, I would be for [it.]' Diamond told Action News Jax that separation would require a majority of beaches voters to approve the measure. Then it would also need approval from the state legislature. Action News Jax reached out to Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach leaders about their thoughts on such a split, but has yet to hear back. Jacksonville Beach Mayor Chris Hoffman declined to comment at this time. Pride event attendees want to know why Main Street Bridge was raised during planned celebration

Participants in a June 1 Pride event in downtown Jacksonville are questioning why the Main Street Bridge was raised an hour ahead of its scheduled closure. More than a hundred members of the local LGBTQ+ community planned to use flashlights to light the bridge to mark the start of Pride month, but they say they were forced to abruptly change their plans. Matthew McAllister is one of the organizers of the Main Street Bridge lighting that was scheduled for Sunday. He said he learned days after they planned their event that the Florida Department of Transportation would close the bridge on Sunday at 9 p.m., forcing them to hold the event earlier. The organizers showed Action News Jax messages from Jacksonville City Councilman Jimmy Peluso, showing that they were all clear to move forward as long as they were out of the way and off the span by 9 p.m. The group said they attempted to follow through with their event – until the Main Street Bridge was raised. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] 'Maybe about halfway up the pedestrian walkway, we noticed the arms coming down, and then the bridge span here begins to lift,' McAllister said. 'There was no boat that was passing underneath, so this wasn't for that,' he said. McAllister said from there the group detoured, turned around, and finished their event on the Acosta Bridge instead. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Local Pride members taking part still want to know why access to the bridge was blocked at the same time they'd planned their demonstration. Action News Jax reached out to FDOT, which controls the raising and lowering of the center span, to ask why the bridge was closed when people planned to gather on it. We reached out to FDOT on Monday, and on Tuesday, and FDOT spokesperson responded to our questions, saying they had received our request and would get back to us. We are still waiting to hear back. First Alert Weather: A wet couple of days ahead for the Jacksonville area

The rain and storms caused a mess Tuesday afternoon, with a tree falling on Interstate 95 in St. Johns County. WATCH THE FORECAST | DOWNLOAD THE APPS Here's what the First Alert Weather Team said we can expect the rest of the week: Scattered heavy showers and storms into early Tuesday night across Northeast Florida, then scattered lingering showers overnight thanks to high humidity and a steady wind out of the SE off the Atlantic. Southeast Georgia will begin Tuesday evening mostly dry, but showers and a few storms will increase overnight. Wednesday and Thursday will be mostly cloudy and muggy with on-and-off showers, a few storms. Tropical downpours will result in some locally heavy rainfall and will help keep temperatures lower, 80-85 degrees. Friday turns drier with more sun and temperatures getting back to 90+ degrees with only an isolated shower or storm. INTERACTIVE RADAR: Keep track of the rain as it moves through your neighborhood TROPICS: (1) An area of weak low pressure will develop the next couple days northeast of Jacksonville & near the coast of the Carolinas. While this area has been highlighted in yellow by the NHC for a low risk of development, there will be few if any direct impacts to Jax/Northeast Florida/Southeast Georgia. Tropical moisture will bring showers and storms to the local area Wednesday and Thursday with or without any low pressure actually developing. (2) keeping an eye on the Western Caribbean and Southern Gulf for possible longer-range tropical development – not likely until at least sometime next week or even later, if at all.
