Israeli Embassy staff killed outside Jewish Museum in DC: What we know
The fatal shooting of two Israeli Embassy staffers in Washington, D.C., late Wednesday night drew an outpouring of grief as well as a global condemnation of antisemitic violence.
The victims, Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Milgrim, 26, were attending a reception hosted by the American Jewish Committee (AJC) on Wednesday night at the Capital Jewish Museum when they were shot and killed. The two were both staffers at the Israeli Embassy in D.C. and were expected to get engaged to be married within the week.
The shooter was apprehended at the scene, and police said he shouted 'free, free Palestine' while being detained.
American, Israeli and other foreign officials and members of the community connected to the AJC — diplomats, advocates and professionals working in foreign policy and conflict resolution — expressed outrage and devastation.
The attack also underscored the persistent threat facing Jewish and Israeli communities. Antisemitic incidents in the U.S. are at an all-time high, spiking after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack against Israel and Israel's resulting war in the Gaza Strip.
'Hours later, I am still shocked by this tragedy … and not shocked at all,' Nathan Diament, executive director for public policy for the Orthodox Union, posted on the social platform X. The Orthodox Union is at the forefront of advocating for increased federal funds to secure houses of worship, in particular synagogues.
'This is where incessant [and] unchecked antisemitism [and] the demonization of Israel leads; to the murder of innocents, the cutting off of a bright future.'
The shooting occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on May 21 outside the Capital Jewish Museum in downtown Washington, D.C.
Police named the suspect as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, and the FBI said early indications are that the shooting was a targeted act of violence.
D.C. officials, in a press conference Wednesday night, said there was no further, active threat after the alleged shooter was apprehended. They said the investigation was in its preliminary stages.
Attorney General Pam Bondi was also at the press conference. She said U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro will prosecute the case. Bondi later said there's early indication the shooter acted alone.
'This defendant, if charged, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,' Bondi said.
The Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), a communist political party active in protesting against what it views as Israeli genocide against Palestinians, said Rodriguez had a brief association with one branch of PSL that ended in 2017.
'We reject any attempt to associate the PSL with the DC shooting,' the group wrote in a post on X. 'We know of no contact with him in over 7 years. We have nothing to do with this shooting and do not support it.'
Lischinsky was born in Israel, moved with his family to Germany for several years and returned to Israel when he was 16, The New York Times reported. He served as a research assistant in the political department at the embassy, and friends and associates said he was a practicing Christian.
Milgrim, an American from Kansas, worked at the embassy and organized trips to Israel. Milgrim's family is Jewish.
The two were attending an event that brought together U.S. government officials, young diplomats serving in D.C., and professionals working in foreign policy and conflict resolution. The evening focused on addressing the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and Israeli-Palestinian regional collaboration, according to participants of the event.
'The brutal and tragic irony that such an event — motivated by humanitarian principles — was targeted for more violence is heartbreaking. We unequivocally condemn this attack,' IsraAID, the organization that served as a keynote speaker at the event, said in a statement.
The two victims were memorialized by friends and colleagues.
'Sarah, an American from Overland Park, Kansas, was warm and compassionate, committed to peacebuilding, and passionate about sustainability and people-to-people relations,' AJC CEO Ted Deutch said in a statement.
'Yaron always had a smile on his face and a welcoming presence.'
'Yaron was a valued colleague and friend to many at Hudson. He and Sarah, soon to be his fiancée, were dedicated professionals at the Israeli Embassy,' the Hudson Institute, a conservative Washington think tank, said in a statement.
President Trump condemned the attacks as being based on antisemitism.
Other U.S. officials and foreign governments were quick to label the violence as antisemitic, the outrage spanning the political spectrum from Vice President Vance to progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).
'As we await more details, we must be clear that hatred has no home here. Antisemitism is a threat to all we hold dear as a society. It must be confronted and rooted out everywhere,' Ocasio-Cortez posted on X.
United Kingdom Foreign Minister David Lammy condemned the 'appalling, antisemitic crime.'
The German Embassy in Washington called it an 'antisemitic act of terror'
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) pointed to anti-Israel protests, in particular on college campuses, as fueling acts of antisemitic violence.
'Since October 7, antisemitism has surged across the country. On college campuses, in the streets, and across social media, antisemitism isn't just spreading — it's being tolerated, normalized, and even celebrated. It's disgusting and completely unacceptable,' he said in a statement.
Stuart E. Eizenstat, chair of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, described the shooting as an assault on the Jewish state and Jewish people.
'Inciteful antisemitic rhetoric is a growing and increasingly deadly danger to Jews and societies worldwide,' he said in a statement. 'It must be forcibly and universally condemned. Our thoughts are with the victims' families and colleagues at this time of great loss.'
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres did not label the violence as antisemitic, but he issued a condemnation.
'Nothing can justify such a horrific act. I reiterate my consistent condemnation of attacks against diplomatic officials,' he said in a statement on X.
'I call for the perpetrator to be brought to justice. I extend my sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims and to the Government of Israel.'

Jared Leto accused of sexual misconduct and 'predatory, terrifying' behaviour by nine women
Oscar-winning American actor and Thirty Seconds From Mars frontman Jared Leto has been accused of sexual misconduct by nine women. In a report published by Air Mail, multiple women accused the 53-year-old star of Fight Club, Requiem For A Dream, Dallas Buyers Club and Suicide Squad of inappropriate behaviour. The allegations date back to the early 2000s, with one woman calling it 'an open secret' that he texted sexual remarks to teenage models. Allegations against Leto emerged last month, when DJ Allie Teilz shared an old Facebook post, written in 2012, on her Instagram Story. 'Youre [sic] not really in L.A. until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage… In a kilt.. And a snow hat. I was assaulted and traumatized by this creep when I was 17,' she wrote. In separate story, she added: 'He knew my age and didn't care. What he did was predatory, terrifying and unacceptable.' One woman told the publication that in 2006, when she was 16-years-old, Leto approached her outside a Los Angeles café. She claimed Leto was sat with fellow actor Ashley Olsen – who was then 19 – and he had grabbed her arm. 'I looked down and it was Jared Leto,' she told Air Mail, adding: 'We had a quick conversation, and he got my number.' She went on to say that Leto called her home a few days later, recalling: 'I don't know if he was on drugs or what … It was the weirdest, grossest voice … [but] for me, it's Jared, you know?' 'And the conversations turned sexual,' she continued. 'He'd ask things like: 'Have you ever had a boyfriend? Have you ever sucked a dick?'' Model Laura La Rue came forward with similar claims, saying that when she was 16-years-old in 2008, she was at an event in a private residence in Beverly Hills where Leto was 'watching her so intensely'. 'He asked how old I was. I said, 'I'm 16. How old are you?'' La Rue told Air Mail. Leto, who was 36 at the time, then reportedly asked for her number. The two began an email correspondence, which resulted in her visiting Leto's home in April 2009, the outlet alleges. 'I remember him teasing me the whole time I was there,' La Rue said, adding: 'He was flirting with me. He'd lean in close, then pull away, like it was a game.' She described a separate visit when she was 17 years old, where she alleged Leto walked out of a room completely naked. 'He just walked out, dick out, like it was normal… I thought maybe this was just what adult men do,' she said. Another woman who spoke to the outlet said that she and Leto began texting while she was still underage. She alleged he would ask her inappropriate questions during her visits to his house, including 'Do any of the little boys you hang out with fuck you?' The woman alleged that once, when she was 18, Leto had 'suddenly pulled his penis out and started masturbating'. She told Air Mail: 'He walked over, grabbed my hand, and put it on him. He leaned in and said: 'I want you to spit on it.'' A representative of Leto has 'expressly denied' the multiple accusations reported in the Air Mail exposé, saying the claims were 'demonstrably false'. This is not the first time that Leto's behaviour has been questioned and called out. Similar claims were made in 2005, when The New York Post shared a story with the opening line: 'Jared Leto likes 'em young' after he had been spotted with Olsen and Lindsay Lohan. At the time, sources told the publication he had been 'aggressively pursuing many of the teen models shacked up at the Maritime Hotel'. In 2018, Metro reported on a Twitter post made by Dylan Sprouse, who is married to model Barbara Palvin. The post read: 'Yo @JaredLeto now that you've slid into the DMs of every female model aged 18–25, what would you say your success rate is?' Guardians Of The Galaxy and Superman director James Gunn replied to Sprouse's tweet at the time, saying: 'He starts at 18 on the internet?'

Boulder Jewish Festival draws statewide support after attack
BOULDER, Colo. (KDVR) — Thousands gathered at Boulder's Pearl Street Mall for the first time since last Sunday's terror attack that injured 15 people, including a Holocaust survivor. Forty-five-year-old Egyptian national Mohamed Soliman faces federal hate crime charges in the attack. Naor Bitton intervened when the suspect was seen throwing firebombs into a crowd at the Walk For Their Lives rally to call for the return of hostages in Gaza. Family on Pearl Street during terror attack returns 1 week later for Boulder Jewish Festival 'I was lucky enough to be able to help, helped put the flames out, helped create distance between the people and the attacker,' Bitton told FOX31. On Sunday, a week later, he stood on the same block, this time joining a strong coalition. 'Our strength is in unity and we are always driving towards peace,' he said. Buses carrying supporters from metro Denver, Colorado Springs, Vail and other locations arrived at the festival over the weekend. 'Jewish people, non-Jewish people, we saw here Christians, we saw here Muslims; came from all around just to be with the Jewish people and to show us that we're not alone and terror has no place not in Boulder, not in Colorado hopefully not in the world; it was just beautiful,' Bitton said. Visitors saw a strong police presence during the festival. Security increased at Boulder Jewish Festival in light of attack 'I think we needed that today because it's so recent,' said one visitor, referring to the attack. Musician Jay Gindi tells FOX31 the high turnout of festival visitors sends the right message. 'The biggest thing is not letting the terror win,' he said. Others attending the event say that national and international attention now focused on Boulder provides an opportunity to bring people together. 'This should not be a political discussion; we have a community member that was burned by a terrorist. This is a terrible, terrible thing and as a whole, we should always get together, support, come together and show love,' said Jared Jacharowicz. Soliman appeared in federal court on Friday, his next court appearance is scheduled for June 18. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Greta Thunberg Says She Has Been Kidnapped by Israeli Forces-What We Know
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Israeli forces intercepted a Gaza-bound aid vessel on Monday and detained its passengers, including climate activist Greta Thunberg, amid ongoing restrictions on access to the Palestinian territory. Why It Matters The civilian vessel, named Madleen and operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), was stopped in international waters. The Israeli military stated that the interception was part of enforcement measures related to its longstanding naval blockade of Gaza. The FFC said the group was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid, including food, baby formula and medical supplies. According to Israel's Foreign Ministry, the Madleen was redirected to the Israeli port of Ashdod, and the passengers would be returned to their countries of origin. The ministry released a video showing the activists wearing life vests and receiving food and water. In a statement posted online, it described the ship as a "selfie yacht" and said the aid would be transferred to Gaza through established procedures. The FFC had advised participants to prepare for interception and recorded messages in advance. SOS! the volunteers on 'Madleen' have been kidnapped by Israeli forces. Web: X : @SweMFA FB : @SweMFA IG : swedishmfa#AllEyesOnMadeleen — Freedom Flotilla Coalition (@GazaFFlotilla) June 9, 2025 The Israeli government stated that unauthorized attempts to breach the blockade are "unlawful" and "undermine ongoing humanitarian efforts." Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said he instructed the Israel Defense Forces to prevent the Madleen from reaching Gaza and that the passengers would be shown a video of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks upon their arrival in Israel. Israel and Egypt have maintained a blockade of Gaza since 2007, following the takeover of the territory by Hamas. Israel says the restrictions are aimed at preventing the import of weapons and materials used by militant groups; and that all passengers "are safe and unharmed." Hamas, which governs Gaza, called the interception "a flagrant violation of international law" and said the activists were "civilian volunteers acting out of humanitarian motives." The group has demanded their immediate release and called on the United Nations and other international organizations to intervene. All the passengers of the 'selfie yacht' are safe and unharmed. They were provided with sandwiches and water. The show is over. — Israel Foreign Ministry (@IsraelMFA) June 9, 2025 The United Nations has raised concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where more than 2 million people reside. A UN-backed assessment warned in April 2025 that one in five residents faced starvation. The Gaza Health Ministry reports more than 54,000 fatalities in the territory since the conflict escalated in October 2023. Israel's campaign followed a Hamas-led attack in which 1,200 people were killed and over 250 were taken hostage, according to Israeli authorities. The FFC, founded in 2010, has organized multiple attempts to challenge the blockade. Last month, another vessel in its fleet, the Conscience, was damaged in what the group alleged was a drone strike off the coast of Malta. The Israeli military did not comment on that incident. The Madleen had departed Sicily on June 1. What Happens Next? Israeli authorities have indicated that the detained activists will be processed and repatriated. As of Monday, they were being transported to Ashdod.
