Jharkhand Man, Daughter Awarded For Rescuing Tiger That Entered Their Home
The Forest Department of the Jharkhand government on Friday felicitated a man and his daughter for their bravery in the rescue of a tiger, which entered their home.
A male tiger had entered the house of Purandar Mahto in Mardu village in Muri police station area, around 4.30 am on June 25. Mahto's daughter Sonika Kumari and another girl tactfully managed to exit the house, an official said.
Mahto, along with his daughter, then locked the door from the outside. After locking the animal inside the house, he informed the Forest Department. A rescue team from the Palamau Tiger Reserve (PTR) reached the location and successfully caged the animal, he said.
The next day, the tiger was released in the PTR, he added.
Mahto and his daughter, a class 10 student, were given a cheque of Rs 1.20 lakh for their barvery, and a separate cheque of Rs 21,000 for their contribution in forest promotion and conservation on the occasion of 76th Van Mahotsav in Ranchi.
Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato handed over the cheques in the presence of Parliamentary Affairs Minister Radhakrishna Kishore and other dignitaries.
Addressing the programme, the speaker said pollution is on the rise because the number of trees is declining.
"This is everyone's duty to plant trees and make our atmosphere pollution-free," he said.
Kishore, who is also the state finance minister, said Jharkhand has around 30 per cent forest cover, which used to be between 45 and 55 per cent in 1960-70.
"There has been a decline in the forest cover. We need to plant trees and increase the forest cover as it was in the past," he said.

NEW DELHI: A day ahead of the Monsoon Session, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Sunday inaugurated the E-Vidhan (paperless assembly) system and a 500 kW solar power plant at the Delhi Legislative Assembly Complex. With this, all legislative work in the Delhi Assembly will now be conducted digitally, enhancing the pace and quality of policymaking. The solar initiative is expected to generate savings of up to Rs 15 lakh per month, roughly Rs 1.75 crore annually, and is projected to recover its cost quickly while potentially generating surplus electricity through net metering. The E-Vidhan platform complements this transition by enabling a paperless legislative process, promoting administrative efficiency and cutting down the institution's carbon footprint. Speaking at the inauguration, Meghwal described the project as a model for sustainable governance across India. He said Delhi Assembly's complete shift to solar energy sets a benchmark for legislative and public institutions nationwide. Crediting the progress to PM Narendra Modi's leadership, he said, 'Sustainability, self-reliance, and digital empowerment are moving together.' Tribal titan Shibu Soren: A legacy of power, struggles and controversies
RANCHI: Shibu Soren, the veteran tribal leader who played a key role in Jharkhand's creation and founded the JMM, leaves behind a legacy that reshaped the country's politics. The death of 81-year-old Soren marks the end of a political era that saw tribal movement rise to national prominence. Born on January 11, 1944, in Ramgarh district's Nemra village (then in Bihar, now in Jharkhand), Soren, who was popularly known as 'Dishom Guru' (leader of the land) and patriarch of JMM, is one of the most enduring political figures in the country's tribal and regional political landscape. His political life was defined by continuous advocacy for the rights for tribals. According to Soren's family, his early life was marked by personal tragedy and deep socio-economic struggles. Soren was 15 years old when his father, Shobaran Soren, was allegedly killed by moneylenders in Lukaiyatand forest, some 16 km from Gola block headquarters on November 27, 1957. This left a deep impact on him and became a catalyst for his future political activism. In 1973, Soren co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) along with Bengali Marxist trade unionist AK Roy and Kurmi-Mahto leader Binod Bihari Mahto during a public meeting at Golf Ground Dhanbad. The JMM soon became the primary political voice for the demand for a separate tribal state and got support across the Chotanagpur and Santhal Pargana regions. Soren's grassroots mobilisation against feudal exploitation is said to have shaped him into a tribal icon. After decades of agitation, steered by him and others, the demand for a separate state was finally fulfilled with the formation of Jharkhand on November 15, 2000.
