JKR urged to boost safety at accident-prone Senawang junction
State Local Government Development, Housing and Transport Committee chairman J. Arul Kumar said his office had discussed with JKR the best approach to get road users to slow down at the location.
'Among the suggestions discussed were the installation of early warning lights before the junction and additional signage to indicate an accident-prone area to alert road users to be more cautious,' he told Bernama here today.
Arul, who also chairs the state-level Road Safety Council, said that while the authorities can enhance safety measures at the location, all road users should play their part by driving responsibly.
He stressed that driving behaviour and driver attitude play a critical role, and thus compliance with traffic laws, especially stopping at red lights, must be prioritised.
Arul said drivers found guilty of running red lights and causing accidents should face appropriate penalties.
Meanwhile, Paroi state assemblyman Kamarul Ridzuan Md Zain suggested that, to reduce the risk of accidents at the location, authorities could paint thick yellow lines or install road studs to help slow vehicles down.
'With such safety elements in place, road users will be more cautious and won't be able to speed recklessly,' he said.
A 20-year-old man was killed when the motorcycle he was riding was hit by a van that allegedly failed to stop at the Matahari Height traffic light junction at about midnight last Saturday.
A similar incident occurred in March when three motorcyclists were killed after being hit by a Honda Jazz that reportedly ran a red light at the same location.

Penang authorities probe fallen boulder incident on Jalan Tun Sardon
BALIK PULAU, Aug 11 — Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into an incident where a boulder measuring 12 square feet fell from a hillside onto the road at kilometre 1.0 of Jalan Tun Sardon, from Balik Pulau towards Paya Terubong, here today. Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and the Public Works Department's (JKR) contractor were investigating the incident, which occurred in the morning. 'South-west District JKR received information from the public at 11.20 am regarding the incident. The boulder, measuring 12 square feet, had fallen from the hillside onto the road. As of now, the JKR contractor has removed it. 'All preliminary mitigation works are being carried out and the road has been reopened to public vehicles. At the same time, the JKR contractor, Pintas Utama Sdn Bhd, together with MBPP's geotechnical unit, are on site conducting a full investigation,' he said in a statement today. He also urged all road users in the area to exercise extra caution when passing through the stretch. DAP man urges caution after businesswoman narrowly avoids JKR impersonation scam

KUCHING (Aug 3): A businesswoman nearly fell victim to an elaborate scam involving individuals impersonating officials from the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak. According to Democratic Action Party Sarawak assistant publicity secretary Michael Kong, the victim was contacted by someone claiming to be an official from JKR Sarawak, who identified herself as Dorisi and required certain items for an upcoming staff function. 'To make the scam appear legitimate, Dorisi produced fake tender notices and documents supposedly signed by the JKR Sarawak director. 'After convincing the businesswoman of the authenticity of these documents, Dorisi requested the businesswoman to submit her company details, including sensitive information such as bank account numbers,' Kong said in a statement today. Kong said the scammer then issued a Letter of Acceptance of Offer and Purchase Orders to the victim, further creating the impression of a real contract. He said the scam took a darker turn when Dorisi instructed the victim to procure one of the listed items from a so-called 'previous vendor' of theirs. 'Sensing something was wrong, the businesswoman sought assistance and approached us. Upon investigation, we confirmed that there was no such JKR Sarawak tender (existed).' Kong said they immediately assisted her in lodging a police report to prevent further harm. This case, Kong stressed, should serve as a serious warning, especially to business owners, not to rely solely on phone calls, emails or online documents when handling business transactions. He urged the public to always verify the legitimacy of tenders, purchase orders or contracts by visiting the relevant offices directly. In addition, Kong said one must be cautious when asked to provide sensitive personal or company information, as such data can be misused for future scams or identity theft. 'Although this businesswoman was fortunate to avoid financial losses, her personal and business information is now in the hands of scammers, which could lead to further risks in the future,' he said. Negligence of Pan Borneo contractor blamed

BEAUFORT: A motorcyclist escaped serious injury or worse due to the alleged negligence of the Pan Borneo Project contractor, who failed to place proper warning signs near a pothole, recently. The accident occurred at Kampung Naluyan, Mesapol Sipitang, along the Pan Borneo Highway (Sindumin–Melalia stretch). According to an eyewitness, Abdillah AJ, the victim, identified as Bakar Januddin, crashed into a deep pothole at approximately 11:30 am. Abdillah said he was on his way back from Sipitang and had just reached Kampung Naluyan, near the junction to Kampung Lubok Darat, when he witnessed the motorcyclist veer off and fall into the roadside hole. 'Fortunately, some passersby noticed the incident and helped the victim out of the hole. He was rushed to the hospital, but his motorcycle was badly damaged,' Abdillah said. The victim sustained a fractured right arm. The witness stressed that no warning signs or signal lights were placed at the location to alert road users of the hazard. 'I've seen too many accidents caused by the carelessness of the Pan Borneo highway contractors. It's costing people their safety,' he added. Residents living along the stretch between Sipitang and Lumadan want the government, particularly the Public Works Department (JKR), to closely monitor the road conditions and ensure the contractor fulfills safety obligations. Sipitang District Police Chief Supt Awang Anak Suanda said police have received a report from the victim's family. 'The victim must file a formal report at the police station to proceed with claims against the Public Works Department and the responsible parties for the damages incurred,' he said.
