Thoughts on an 8-1 Rangers win
Another series, another sweep.
That's two in a row for Your Texas Rangers, and five series wins in a row.
Jack Leiter did work. Just two hits allowed in six innings.
One of those hits was a bloop ground rule double down the left field line that was barely fair, and fell in out of the reach of Wyatt Langford, Josh Jung and Corey Seager. It was in the second inning, with one out, after Leiter had walked the first two batters to start the inning.
From that point — runners on second and third, one out in the second — through the end of the sixth, the only baserunners Jack Leiter allowed were a fifth inning single and a sixth inning walk.
Caleb Boushley and Cole Winn handled the final three innings, which can be either a very good thing or a very bad thing. In this case it was a very good thing.
The offense put up crooked numbers early. Three in the first, two in the second, and three in the third. Then didn't do anything in the final five innings, but whatever, it didn't matter, the pitching shut the Braves down.
A two out, bases loaded double from Wyatt Langford in the first brought home three runs, which was all the Rangers would have needed. Langford went two for three with a walk and we can only hope that he's headed for a hot second half.
Josh Smith had a two run homer in the second. He was 3 for 4 with a walk.
Jonah Heim had a couple of hits. Adolis Garcia had a hit and a couple of walks.
It was a game that felt like watching the 2023 team.
Meanwhile, a Seattle loss means the Rangers are now tied with Seattle for the third Wild Card spot. They are a half game back of the Red Sox for WC2, and a game and a half back of the Yankees for WC1. Houston lost, and so Texas is just four back in the division.
Jack Leiter's fastball topped out at 99.3 mph, averaging 97.2 mph. Caleb Boushley hit 93.3 mph with his fastball. Cole Winn touched 96.8 mph with his fastball.
Josh Smith had a 105.6 mph home run. Joc Pederson had a 104.2 mph groundout. Josh Jung had a 101.5 mph single and a 100.6 mph fly out. Wyatt Langford had a 100.3 mph double.
Now a seven game West Coast trip. Texas needs to win three out there, and four or more would be even better.

Pressing Rangers Questions And Answers
When a club like the Rangers finishes in the NHL's subterranean depths, it raises questions that must be answered before the autumn leaves start to fall. (Now don't be a wise guy and tell me that they're falling already.) A successful answer to the questions below could mean the difference between a playoff berth or more misery. So let's give it a shot and see what happens. QUESTION ONE: How will Matt Rempe react to another dismissal to Beautiful Downtown Connecticut? MAVEN: He'll sit in the corner and sulk for a minute, discover that he's getting a ton of dough for very little work and catch the next Amtrak to Connecticut. The Remper knows from experience that a call back to Penn Station is less than a month away. QUESTION TWO: What hope is there for Mika Zibanejad to really and truly, I mean REALLY AND TRULY – reform? MAVEN: If such a thing as peer pressure exists in the Rangers dressing room -- having a captain wouldn't hurt – then it's possible that Z will take defense seriously. Also, some lovey-dovey from new coach Mike Sullivan could help. (A little.) QUESTION THREE: What did the general staff learn from watching the Panthers? MAVEN: A blend of tough hockey and skill distilled by a brainy but funny coach and a clutch goalie wins Cups. (Are the Rangers tough enough? Depends on the third and fourth lines.) QUESTION FOUR: Which teams will the Rangers beat out to make the playoffs? MAVEN: Buffalo, Columbus, Washington, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston. The Hockey Maven Picks His Five Favorite Rangers Anybody can like a star; it's the easiest thing in the world. QUESTION FIVE: Why will you like the new Rangers MSG Networks broadcast team? Maven: Kenny Albert on play-by-play and Dave Maloney on "color" will bring a fresh vim, vigor and vitality to viewers. The pair will be invigorated by the move from radio to tv. Albert will bring his world class play-by-play while Maloney's combo of sandpaper candor and "fan feeling" will add a unique touch. Sam and Joe never will be forgotten but Kenny and Dave have the best act to follow!

Play ball, take 2: The MLB Speedway Classic resumes at Bristol after rain suspension
BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — A record crowd for a regular-season Major League Baseball game got to see all the pomp and pageantry with the MLB Speedway Classic before the rain washed out the game itself in the bottom of the first inning. Fans returning Sunday only wanted to watch the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds play ball. They enjoyed enough of star Tim McGraw and Pitbull in the rain that suspended the first MLB regular-season game in the state of Tennessee. 'We got to see all of that (Saturday), so as long as we see game today I think we'll be good,' Cindy Lowe of Mount Airy, North Carolina, said. Craig Morton agreed. He and his family, with three children, were ready to see baseball even if Morton is the Reds' fan surrounded by relatives rooting for the Braves. They had a good time seeing McGraw and country singer Jake Owen. Sunday was dry at Bristol Motor Speedway even with overcast skies. 'We're really glad that they played the game today instead of last night because we sat here a couple hours in the rain and everybody was saturated even with rain gear,' Morton said. 'The kids are happy so we're happy.' This MLB Speedway Classic was first announced nearly a year ago as part of Commissioner Rob Manfred's push to take MLB to places where baseball isn't played every day live. MLB played a game at the 'Field of Dreams' movie site in Iowa in both 2021 and 2022. Alabama and North Carolina, too. MLB didn't try to sell every ticket inside the speedway that drew 156,990 for the Battle of Bristol college football game in 2016. The track with a racing capacity of 146,000 meant the final attendance number could reach 90,000 or more even with sections blocked off. The previous paid attendance of 84,587 was set Sept. 12, 1954, when Cleveland Stadium hosted the New York Yankees. Simply canceling this game wasn't an option. The Reds are in the chase for a wild-card spot, and this is the last time these teams meet this season. Teams had police escorts to make sure they got back to Bristol on Sunday. For fans, the commute back to Bristol Motor Speedway, billed as 'The Last Great Colosseum' with its history as a half-mile bullring of a racetrack, was easier for some than others. Steven Long of Atlanta, Georgia, was on a party bus to his hotel in Knoxville with a bunch of distributors. He drove the 110 miles back to Bristol on Sunday by himself even though he had hoped to be driving home. He couldn't miss the first MLB game at a racetrack. 'I had to come back,' said Long, who wore his Braves jersey hoping for a win. MLB will be announcing an attendance figure later Sunday. Officials already knew this event would draw a record crowd with 85,000 tickets sold as of Monday. The big question Sunday was how many people would return for baseball itself after the big party that MLB and Bristol threw for fans Saturday. For Lowe and Jason Lawson, this is a moment they couldn't miss after buying tickets in May. 'The history, the nostalgia of Bristol Motor Speedway combined with Major League Baseball all in one I think,' Lowe said. ___
