Soccer returns to war-torn Sudan as elite clubs go back home

TimesLIVE09-07-2025
League football has returned to war-torn Sudan for the first time in more than two years with a one-month competition being organised for eight clubs to determine the country's champions.
Sudan has been in the grip of conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, with more than 150,000 people killed and about 12 million uprooted, creating the largest displacement crisis in the world.
Among them have been the country's biggest clubs Al Hilal and Al Merrikh, who between them have won all but four of the championships since the league was created in 1965.
Last season the pair were invited to play in the league in Mauritania, on the other side of the continent, where they could remain active and moved their club structures to the West African country, where Al Hilal emerged as champions.
But they are both back in Sudan to take part in a tournament to decide which clubs will compete in continental club competition for the 2025/26 season.
Al Hilal were quarterfinalists in this year's African Champions League despite having to host their home games on neutral territory.

Portugal's Joao Felix joins Ronaldo at Al Nassr in Saudi

According to Arryadia, a Riyadh sports newspaper, Felix will earn $10 million a year. Portuguese forward Joao Felix has signed a two-year deal with Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr, where he will join Cristiano Ronaldo, the club announced Tuesday. Felix, now 25, made a blockbuster move from Benfica to Atletico Madrid in 2019, but has since seen his fortunes decline. 'I'm here to spread joy. Let's win together,' said Felix in a video posted on the Riyadh club's X account. A separate post said he had signed until 2027. Felix remains one of the most expensive transfers in history, following his move to Atletico for 127.7 million euros ($147.3 million) six years ago. He has since failed to score more than 10 goals a season, despite stints at Barcelona, AC Milan and Chelsea. According to Arryadia, a Riyadh sports newspaper, Felix will earn $10 million a year. Saudi Arabia has shaken up football by spending heavily on stars from Europe, starting with Ronaldo's arrival in 2023, and the conservative desert nation will host the World Cup in 2034. Many of the signings have been ageing stars, but Felix bucks the trend along with Mateo Retegui, 26, the Serie A top-scorer who joined Al Qadsiah last week. French international Theo Hernandez, 27, left AC Milan for Al Hilal in a reported $29 million deal earlier this month. Top coaches have also been lured to Saudi Arabia, including Italy's Simone Inzaghi who led Al Hilal to an upset win over Manchester City at the Club World Cup. At Al Nassr, Felix will be working under Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, who was sacked by Al Hilal in May following their defeat in the Asian Champions League semi-finals.

Who will triumph in the WAFCON quarterfinals?

It's down to the serious business of the WAFCON knockout stages this weekend. Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis is looking to guide her team to another WAFCON title. Picture: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix The Women's African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco gets down to the serious business of the quarterfinals this weekend, with Banyana Banyana very much in the mix to defend their title. Desiree Ellis' side will take on Senegal on Saturday in the last quarterfinal at the Honneur Stadium in Oidja, coming into that match on a high after a 4-0 mauling of Mali in their last Group C match. Banyana in WAFCON form After a stuttering start to this WAFCON, that performance was more like the Banyana that won the WAFCON for the first time 2022, and went on to reach the last 16 of the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup. The Lionesses of Teranga are not the force that the Senegal men's team are in the continental game, and Banyana are clear favourites to progress from this last eight game. Betway's latest odds reflect this, with South Africa priced at 1.40. Senegal did reach the quarterfinals of the last WAFCON, losing to Tunisia on penalties, but are outsiders for this one, priced at 6.20, with a draw at 4.40. The West African side did score six goals in the group stages, and only lost narrowly to Zambia and Morocco. But Banyana should have too much skill and experience for them on Saturday. In Saturday's other quarterfinal, Algeria will host Ghana at the Berkane Stadium. Ghana gave Banyana serious problems in their opening Group C match, with South Africa slightly fortunate to emerge with a 2-0 win. They then drew with Mali and pummelled Tanzania 4-1 in their last group match to move into the quarterfinals as Group C runners-up. Algeria finished as runners-up in Group A, without conceding a goal but only scoring one. The odds for Algeria-Ghana are tight, with Ghana slight favourites at 2.24, a draw at 3.00 and Ghana Algeria at 3.10. In Friday's first quarterfinal, by far the continent's most successful side, Nigeria, take on Zambia. Zambia's attacking sensations Barbara Banda and Racheal Kundananji, already have three goals apiece in this WAFCON. Two clear favourites But Nigeria are still clear favourites, priced at 1.66, to Zambia's 4.90, with a draw at 3.40. In Friday's other quarterfinal, hosts Morocco take on Mali. Morocco are even clearer favourites than Nigeria for this one, priced at 1.27, with Mali the underdogs at 8.40 and a draw at 5.20. Please note that these Betway odds are correct at the time of writing and subject to change.

Mokwena to coach Algerian champions Mouloudia

CAIRO - Rulani Mokwena was named coach of Algerian champions Mouloudia Alger on Monday, ending weeks of speculation as to where the 38-year-old would work in the 2025/26 season. His move to Algiers follows one season with Moroccan outfit Wydad Casablanca. He left after finishing third in the national league and failing to qualify for the CAF Champions League. Here, AFP Sport also reports on a setback for Sudanese giants Al Hilal as they chase a place in the forthcoming Champions League in the latest football news across Africa. Algeria Mokwena will come up against two other former South African Premier Soccer League coaches in the Algerian championship. German Josef Zinnbauer, the former Orlando Pirates tactician, guided JS Kabylie to second place behind Mouloudia last season and qualification for the Champions League. Another German, Sead Ramovic, led Chabab Belouizdad to third place and entry to the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup. His previous clubs include TS Galaxy in South Africa. South Africa Young Orlando Pirates forward Mohau Nkota is joining Saudi Pro League club Ettifaq, the Soweto club announced. Last season was his first with the Buccaneers' first team and he scored 12 goals in 39 appearances, including three in Champions League victories over Belouizdad and Mouloudia in Algeria. The 20-year-old will join fellow African Wissam Chaouali, a Tunisian defender, at a club that finished seventh in the Pro League last season, 33 points behind champions Al Ittihad. Sudan Al Hilal, who have featured in every Champions League since 2004, suffered a setback in their bid to qualify for the 2025/26 edition of the premier African club competition. The Sudan Elite League pacesetters lost 1-0 to Al Amal Atbara in the fourth round of a mini-league and remain top of the table only on goal difference from Al Zamaleh Umm Ruwaba. Only two points separate seven of the eight contenders and 16 matches have produced just 18 goals as clubs chase top-four finishes and places in the Champions League and Confederation Cup. Angola Angolan champions Petro Luanda have hired 48-year-old Spanish coach Franc Artiga as they prepare for their Champions League campaign. Former Angola forward Flavio Amado had been in charge of the record 19-time national champions, but lacks the necessary coaching qualifications for the Confederation of African Football competitions. Petro have twice reached the Champions League semi-finals, losing to Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa in 2001 and Wydad Casablanca three years ago. Namibia Namibia, one of many African countries lacking a FIFA-approved stadium, will play their remaining 2026 World Cup home qualifiers against Malawi and São Tomé and Príncipe in neighbouring Botswana. The matches in September are earmarked for Francistown, 440 kilometres (274 miles) northeast of the capital, Gaborone. They previously hosted qualifiers in Soweto near Johannesburg.
