OpenAI's latest GPT-OSS AI models can run on your phone and laptop: What's new
OpenAI says that these are optimised for deployment on consumer-grade hardware, such as laptops, and are trained using a mix of reinforcement learning and techniques informed by OpenAI's more advanced models like O3.
OpenAI also claims that the gpt-oss120b model is nearly on par with OpenAI's O4 mini for core reasoning benchmarks while running on an 80 GB GPU. On the other hand, gpt-oss-20b delivers results similar to OpenAI's O3 mini on common benchmarks while running on edge devices with just 16 GB of GPU memory.
What can they do?
It is worth noting that these models are not multimodal, so they cannot generate items like images or videos, they can only generate pure text.
Furthermore, OpenAI says that these are designed to be used within agentic workflows with tools like web search or Python code execution, and they possess reasoning capabilities, which include the ability to adjust the reasoning effort. OpenAI says that they are also customisable, provide a full chain of thought, and support structured outputs.
Sam Altman calls new models a 'big deal'
Sam Altman, the OpenAI CEO, called it a "big deal", taking to X to post about the new release. He said that GPT-OSS is a state-of-the-art, open weights reasoning model with strong real-world performance comparable to O4 mini, and is something that you can run locally on your computer or even phone. Altman also claimed that OpenAI believes this is the best and most usable open model in the world.
He added that OpenAI believes more good than bad will come from it and that the company has worked hard to mitigate more serious safety issues, especially around biosecurity.

India will build a pool of 40-50 Astronauts
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India needs to build a pool of 40-50 astronauts ready to lead future space missions as he interacted with Shubhanshu Shukla, who is back after spending 20 days in space. Shukla, who became the first Indian to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Axiom-4 commercial mission, told the Prime Minister that there was tremendous interest across the world about India's Gaganyaan mission Shukla met Modi on Monday evening and shared his experiences of the time spent at the ISS, adjusting to micro-gravity conditions, and the experiments he carried out on the orbital lab. The Prime Minister said India now has two major missions ahead – Bhartiya Antariskh Station and Gaganyaan, and Shukla's experience would be of great value in these endeavours Shukla said the two missions presented a major opportunity for the country and the sustained commitment of the government to the space sector, despite setbacks such as the Chandrayaan-II mission was laudable. He said the government's continued support to the space program with consistent budgeting led to the success of Chandrayaan-3. Shukla said such support, even after failures, is being seen globally as a reflection of India's capability and positioning in the space domain. "India can acquire a leadership role and that a space station led by Bharat, with participation from other nations, would be a powerful tool," Shukla said. Shukla told the prime minister that India's Gaganyaan project was generating great interest around the world. "My crew mates even requested signed notes, expressing their desire to be invited to the launch and to travel aboard India's spacecraft," Shukla said. India plans to undertake its first human spaceflight in 2027 and build its own space station by 2035. India also has plans to land its own astronaut on the moon by 2040.

OpenAI heats up AI race with new India offering
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman BENGALURU: Global AI players are sharpening their India strategies as they compete for one of the world's fastest-growing markets. OpenAI on Tuesday introduced ChatGPT Go, a Rs 399 per-month subscription plan built for India, directly pitting itself against rivals Perplexity, Google, and Anthropic's Claude, which have all been pushing their premium offerings in the country. The new plan, powered by GPT-5, gives users higher message limits, image generation, file uploads, and expanded memory. It also marks the first time OpenAI subscriptions can be paid via UPI, widening accessibility in a mobile-first market. OpenAI continues to price ChatGPT Plus at Rs 1,999 a month and ChatGPT Pro at Rs 19,900. Perplexity, which partnered with Bharti Airtel last month to provide its services for free to 360 million subscribers, charges Rs 1,660 per month for its Pro plan and Rs 16,600 for its Max tier. Google's Gemini is available in India at Rs 1,950 a month for Gemini Pro and Rs 24,500 for Gemini Ultra. Anthropic's Claude is priced at Rs 1,415 a month for Claude Pro and Rs 8,300 for Claude Max.
