JP Morgan's Mookim seeks bright spots amid earnings lull in Indian markets

MUMBAI
:
Over the past 18-20 months, identifying large-cap top performers has been challenging amid elevated expectations and lacklustre earnings, according to Sanjay Mookim, head of India equity research at J.P. Morgan.
Currently, only financial stocks appear attractive from a growth and valuation perspective, Mookim says, highlighting the scarcity of compelling opportunities in a market starved of earnings surprises.
The latest earnings season has done little to lift enthusiasm, with few standout results emerging. Though the market rallied briefly following the recent India-Pakistan ceasefire, Mookim expects volatility to persist, fuelled by shifts in US trade policy and potential new trade deals.
With GDP growth normalising and fiscal stimulus exhausted, Mookim describes the current phase as a 'bull market reset", one requiring selective stock picking amid ongoing uncertainty from global trade tensions and geopolitical developments.
Edited excerpts:
After a period of blockbuster economic growth and stock market returns in the last three to four years, what is your expectation for the economy and markets going forward?
For the next three odd years, we are looking at a nominal gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 9-11% for the Indian economy. While we no longer have any room for further fiscal stimuli, there is some monetary policy support from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Even though we anticipate an overall 100 basis point cut in interest rates, favourable liquidity conditions need to persist for a period of time for that to have an impact on the economy.

With GDP growth normalising after the post-covid boom, company earnings will also reflect a similar growth pattern. Hence, we can call it a bull market reset rather than a pause, where the breadth of the companies posting earnings growth will be narrower.
Which sectors do you think will lead this 'reset" era?
Right now, the task that lies ahead of us is to identify a set of top-down stocks within the large-cap segment or a theme where we are seeing earnings surprises. Ultimately, what works in stock picking is avoiding companies that will miss earnings expectations and buying those that will beat expectations.
However, over the last 18-20 months, identifying top-performing stocks has been challenging due to elevated expectations and lacklustre results in the last three quarters. Currently, only financials look attractive from a growth-valuation perspective.
Are current Q4 earnings offering enough positive surprises?
So far, results have been lacklustre. We are seeing very few beats this quarter. While there have been a few that have delivered better-than-expected near-term quarterly earnings, changes to 12-month earnings projections matter more to stock prices.
There have been relatively few instances where analysts have been required to increase forward numbers so far.
What is the FPI sentiment regarding India right now?
The consensus view on India is that it is relatively better positioned compared to other emerging markets amidst the ongoing global uncertainty. Conceptually, foreign investors want to buy Indian stocks, but they do not want to overpay.

Even after a broader market correction, valuations are not anywhere close to being reasonable.
Only financial stocks are available at pre-covid multiples, hence they are the favourite by default. Plus, there is scope for growth there as well. Even if banks' net interest margins come under pressure as the RBI cuts rates, over a two-three-year view, they will have decent compounding of value as loan volumes will receive a boost after rate cuts.
Domestic institutional focus is on sectors with the least exposure to exports. Hence, themes like domestic consumption have gained traction lately. What is your view on that?
I'm wary of feeding the narrative here. Yes, exporters are in trouble, but how well are non-exporters expected to do? This strategy may work for a few months, but I'm not entirely convinced that they will surprise on earnings.
For example, hotels and airline companies are growing well. Their capacity utilizations are high. But are they going to surprise us anymore? This may be difficult given already elevated expectations.
Do you expect a rebound in Indian consumption after the tax break in the Union budget, and hence a rebound in broader earnings in 2025-26?
The quantum of the tax break is just 0.3% of India's GDP. So, I would be sceptical about whether it leads to any material change in consumption. Moreover, young consumers are increasingly chasing experiences, so it remains to be seen how the extra cash will be used beyond smaller ticket discretionary items.
But what really perplexes me is whether Indian consumers are really in trouble, or are they just more value-conscious? We have observed that wherever companies have reduced the prices of products, they have been able to gain volumes and market share quite rapidly. The recent disruption in the beverage space is a prime example.
Do you see the rural segment leading India's consumption story as urban consumption continues to languish following a post-covid normalisation?
India's consumption story is more of an income distribution issue than a rural-urban divide. According to the RBI's latest consumer confidence survey, mostly the low-middle-income households have expressed a drop in confidence levels after an initial recovery post-covid.
This is a bit of a mystery because on one hand, you have large, listed companies struggling to grow volumes of basic staples, but on the other hand, service sector sales remain robust, flight ticket sales are rising, and jewellery consumption is doing extremely well despite the ₹1 lakh sticker shock on gold.

We are seeing smaller unlisted consumer companies from the private equity world, like consumer startups growing very rapidly, while big names are reporting meagre top line or volume growth. Our sense is that such listed companies are probably over-earning. They are defending their margins too aggressively. Previously, you had commodity price inflation, so companies raised prices to pass it to the consumer, but commodity prices have not been a problem for quite a while. Moreover, the staples companies will themselves tell you that their demand is very price-elastic. But prices have not been cut. Hence, they are seeing lacklustre volume growths.
What are the positive levers for the Indian economy?
I believe urbanization is a slightly underappreciated and unexplored driver of the Indian economy. There is a significant degree of migration happening right now in all state capitals, and not just in top-tier metros like Delhi or Mumbai. This will likely boost and sustain consumption. Second, there is a lot of focus on manufacturing right now. Even though India's manufacturing-to-GDP ratio has not actually improved for all the effort that has been exerted. I think this is more a theme that needs to be seen from the bottom up. With the trade war, more manufacturing will come to India. It has started with iPhones and electronics, opening up opportunities in specific sectors. Now it is up to those who are able to best capitalize on them.
Given the market's latest reaction, following the ceasefire agreed between India and Pakistan over the last weekend, do you expect more volatility ahead from this front, or has the market priced in relative stability for now?
Yes, markets are likely to remain volatile in response to changes in US trade policy, potential new trade deals signed between countries, and ultimately driven by actions major central banks take in response to any weakness in economic data.

Satcom permit may force Starlink to share information on illegal kits seized

Elon Musk 's Starlink's satcom permit from the Indian government will make it mandatory for the company to share information, including details of users or owners of satellite kits seized in the country, particularly in the North-East region in the past few months, information the US company was unwilling to share earlier. India's security agencies have pointed out the misuse of Starlink devices in Indian territory, especially in the border areas, officials said. But the Musk company hasn't been cooperating in sharing details of those devices. Officials said Starlink asked the security agencies to put their requests either via the US law enforcement or international protocols. This had forced the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to write to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in March to investigate the matter, officials aware of the details told ET. The DoT is yet to submit a report to the MHA. But officials say, now that a satcom license has been given to Starlink, it will have no choice but to share those details. Else, the company could be issued a show cause notice and even face revocation of license. An ET query sent to SpaceX, parent of Starlink, remained unanswered. ETtech Live Events Various ministries coordinate when it comes to national security. Since commercial satellite communication services, particularly through low earth orbit (LEO) operators like Starlink, is a new phenomenon, its impact is yet to be ascertained. However, the security agencies have seized some terminals that were active in the Indian territory in the Northeast region and sought details of the owners. Discover the stories of your interest Blockchain 5 Stories Cyber-safety 7 Stories Fintech 9 Stories E-comm 9 Stories ML 8 Stories Edtech 6 Stories The DoT was asked to investigate the matter and take preventive measures to safeguard national interests. Experts believe that the situation may become more complicated as Bhutan and Bangladesh are now commercially offering Starlink services and the terminals may be smuggled into Indian territory as geofencing the exact location of the international border will have limitations. Security is topmost priority when it comes to satcom and so far, none of the three licensees-Bharti group-backer Eutelsat OneWeb, Reliance Jio-SES and Starlink-have got security clearances, hobbling commercial services. While Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio-SES joint ventures have got trial spectrum and conducted demonstrations for security requirements, Starlink is yet to be given such airwaves. The US company was given a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite permit only last week. Officials said while the Jio-SES demonstrations are almost over, it is expected to take more time for Eutelsat-OneWeb. Both OneWeb and Jio-SES have satcom permits and nods from space regulator IN-SPACe for over two years. In contrast, Starlink is yet to receive the nod from the regulator.

Nykaa has big plans for house of brands business

Beauty and personal care retailer Nykaa expects its house of brands business to grow significantly and drive profitability over the next three years, co-founder Adwaita Nayar said. The company is betting on its bouquet of home brands in the cosmetics, personal care and apparel segments to lead the charge. Together, Nykaa's house of brands business across fashion and cosmetics has hit a gross merchandise value (GMV) run rate of ₹2,100 crore, Nayar said in an interview. 'It has more than doubled in size in two years," said Nayar, an executive director on the listed company's board and chief executive officer (CEO) of Nykaa Fashion. Also read | Nykaa to expand rapid delivery service to more metros as quick commerce takes off FSN E-Commerce Ventures Ltd, which operates as Nykaa, has acquired three brands—Dot & Key, Earth Rhythm and GICA brands—and built nine others in-house. 'We've been slowly trying to fill the white spaces. We got brands in make-up—like Nykaa Cosmetics and Kay Beauty. We got brands in skincare like Earth Rhythm. We've slowly started building Wanderlust, which is our bath and body brand. We've just started building our perfume business. We have Indian wear, western wear, lingerie and sportswear," Nayar said. Nykaa has been building its brand capabilities over the last few years by hiring key talent, setting up processes and capabilities, working on the product research and development and distribution, Nayar said. Founded by her mother Falguni Nayar in 2012, Nykaa began as an e-commerce platform to curate beauty and wellness products, eventually expanding into fashion and offline retail to become a prominent omnichannel beauty and lifestyle destination. Also read | Nykaa to continue investing in beauty business to drive customer acquisition Dot & Key, which Nykaa acquired when it had annual sales of ₹40 crore, has grown 14-fold over the last four years. It expects some of its own brands like Nykaa Cosmetics, Kay Beauty, Nykd and Twenty Dresses to lead the charge. Nykaa Cosmetics is a ₹350 crore gross margin merchandise business. 'Slowly, steadily, we want to build great customer brands in each of these," she said. Apart from selling online through its website and app, Nykaa has a network of around 237 stories across 70 cities. For fashion, the company currently relies solely on its online channels and does not have an offline presence, Nayar said. Nykaa's offline business continues to be profitable, driving its overall growth. Long-term bet Another new line of business that the group is expecting to boom over the long term is its Superstore business, where Nykaa acts as a distributor for its own as well as other brands. Currently, the firm has a network of around 270,000 retailers across 1,000 cities. Also read | Can Nykaa's house-of-brands strategy be its next growth driver? On 30 May, FSN E-Commerce Ventures reported a 193% jump in its consolidated net profit to ₹20 crore in the March quarter. The company earned a consolidated net profit of ₹7 crore in the same period a year earlier. Consolidated revenue grew 24% to ₹2,062 crore in Q4, against ₹1,668 crore a year before. The firm reported consolidated beauty operations sales of ₹1,895 crore in Q4, up from ₹1,520 crore a year earlier. Vijay L Bhambwani's Ticker: Retail traders getting into overdrive

Last week, I analysed statistical data and wrote that retail traders were getting more aggressive. That aggression not only continued, but retail traders stepped on the gas to go into overdrive. As per the last data available on NSE's website at the time of writing this piece, retail traders bought the highest number of shares with a margin-funded facility. Clearly, there is a sense of urgency in this buying because they are resorting to borrowing when their own capital is falling short. I have repeatedly warned you from many quarters that high leverage and statistical ßeta (pure price volatility) go hand in hand. Also note that I have written about how calendar 2025 marks the onset of procyclicality in financial markets. This economic phenomenon occurs after prolonged periods of time when asset prices and the economic outlook diverge. Mean reversion is triggered, and asset prices align with economic data. High volatility is a direct result. Brace up for a challenging but profitable ride ahead. Last week, I wrote that the banking and financial sector stocks would be buoyant ahead of the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) announcement on interest rates. That hypothesis was validated by the markets. Also, remember this sector commands a weightage of over 37% in the Nifty 50. The announcement of the government being open to foreign buyers as major holders in Indian banks boosted banking stocks further. Which means it was banking that boosted markets higher. This optimism may spill over to this week as well. I had also written that the interest rate cut of over 0.25% would be a negative development for cash carry trade. That RBI cut the rate by 0.50% tells me markets saw a short-covering-based rally. There is a good probability of profit-taking setting in the weeks ahead. Rising oil and gas prices can trigger volatility in oil marketing companies (OMCs) stocks. Fears of higher inflation can return in the near term unless energy prices fall. The rise is due to geopolitical concerns, and the energy markets remain well supplied. Bullion saw a sterling week as gold and silver rallied sharply. I maintain my view that my readers should look beyond 2025 and stick to delivery holdings rather than pay cost-of-carry (financing charges) that futures & options (F&O) buyers have to incur. All big declines will be bought into by institutional players, so the long-term story remains intact. My readers can refer to my video wherein I have explained how to buy purest bullion at honest-to-God prices, conduct fool-proof checks for purity electronically and negotiate buyback prices. Industrial metals are witnessing some buying, but resistance at higher levels continues to cap gains. Much of the price rise is due to tariffs rather than anticipated demand hikes. That means metal mining companies' stocks may rise due to rate cuts, but the rally may be calibrated. Public sector undertakings (PSUs) will continue to attract trader attention as newsflow is positive for this segment of the market. Fixed income investors should keep the powder dry for better rates. Continue to trade light with stop losses and tail risk hedges. A tutorial video on tail risk (Hacienda) hedges is here. Let us assess last week's happenings to gauge what to expect in the coming week. Due to their sheer weightage, banking stocks led the rally. A weak US dollar boosted haven buying in bullion and energy commodities, too. The rupee weakened mildly against the dollar, capping the gains in our markets. Watch the USDINR carefully this week. Indian 10-year bond yield rose mildly, which means bond prices fell mildly. Barring this, banking stocks would have risen even higher. Market capitalisation of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) rose 1.59%, which means the rally was broad-based. Market-wide position limits (MWPL) rose routinely along expected lines. US headline indices rose and provided tail winds to our markets. Change in asset prices Retail risk appetite—I use a simple yet highly accurate yardstick for measuring the conviction levels of retail traders—where are they deploying money. I measure what percentage of the turnover was contributed by the lower and higher risk instruments. If they trade more of futures, which require sizable capital, their risk appetite is higher. Within the futures space, index futures are less volatile compared to stock futures. A higher footprint in stock futures shows higher aggression levels. Ditto for stock and index options. Last week, this is what their footprint looked like (the numbers are the average of all trading days of the week) – The capital-intensive, high-risk futures segment saw lower turnover contribution as higher volatility kept traders at bay. In the lower capital and lower volatility options segment, the index options saw the turnover contribution rise. This segment is the least capital-intensive and the least volatile. That tells me retail risk appetite in the leveraged segment fell off a cliff. NSE F&O Component Turnover Breakdown Let us peel layer after layer of statistical data to arrive at the core message of the markets. The first chart I share is the NSE advance-decline ratio. After the price itself, this indicator is the fastest (leading) indicator of which way the winds are blowing. This simple yet accurate indicator computes the ratio of rising to falling stocks. As long as the stocks that are gaining outnumber the losers, bulls are dominant. This metric gauges the risk appetite of one marshmallow traders. These are pure intraday traders. The Nifty notched up gains last week, and the advance-decline ratio followed suit. At 1.15 (prior week 1.05), it indicates there were 115 gainers for every 100 losers. Intraday traders showed improved buying conviction, and as long as this ratio stays above 1.0 this week, bulls will remain in charge. A tutorial video on the Marshmallow theory in trading is here. NSE Advance-Decline Ratio The second chart I share is the market-wide position limits. This measures the amount of exposure utilised by traders in the derivatives (F&O) space as a component of the total exposure allowed by the regulator. This metric gauges the risk appetite of two marshmallow traders. These are deep-pocketed, high-conviction traders who roll over their trades to the next session. The MWPL reading rose along routine lines after a post-expiry dip. What is noteworthy is the increase to 31.24% in the first week after expiry. This level is the highest after the commensurate week post expiry of the January 2025 series. Do note that the derivatives list has seen sizable new stock additions, which means the absolute amounts invested by swing traders are sharply higher. This is more evidence that the retail segment is going into overdrive. Higher greed may lead to crowded exits if the news flow turns adverse. Do remember, volatility is on the rise already. Keep looking over your shoulder and maintain tail risk hedges. A dedicated tutorial video on how to interpret MWPL data in more ways than one is available here. Market-Wide Position Limits The third chart I share is my in-house indicator, 'impetus.' It measures the force in any price move. Last week, we saw the Bank Nifty lead the rally, but the impetus reading fell. The Nifty 50 rallied with mildly higher impetus readings, which tells me the upthrust was more due to short covering than fresh buying. Ideally, the price and impetus readings must rise in tandem to indicate a sustainable rally in the markets. Nifty and Bank Nifty Impetus The final chart I share is my in-house indicator 'LWTD.' It computes lift, weight, thrust and drag encountered by any security. These are four forces that any powered aircraft faces during flight, so applying them to traded securities helps a trader estimate prevalent sentiments. Last week, the Nifty rose, but the LWTD reading dove from 0.11 to -0.21. That tells me the rally was more due to short covering, and fresh buying may have been limited. Ideally, prices and LWTD readings must rise together to indicate a sustainable rally. A tutorial video on interpreting the LWTD indicator is here. Nifty and LWTD Indicator The weekly chart shows a bullish candle with a bigger body than the prior week's candle. The last bullish candle's body also engulfs the prior week's bearish candle body, which is called a bullish engulfing pattern. It indicates the dominance of bulls over bears. Last week, I suggested a 25,250 level as a last-mile hurdle that bulls had to overcome before pushing markets higher. That level remained inviolate. The 25,250 remains a hurdle to watch this week. The price is above the 25-week moving average, which is a proxy for the six-month holding cost of an average retail investor. That means the medium-term outlook is positive. The 24,500 level is a support that bulls must defend in case of declines. Failing which further declines may occur. Nifty Spot Your call to action – Watch the 25,250 level as a near-term resistance. Staying above this level strengthens bulls. Last week, I estimated ranges between 57,400 – 54,100 and 25,475 – 24,025 on the Bank Nifty and Nifty, respectively. Both indices traded within their specified resistance levels. This week, I estimate ranges between 58,200 – 54,950 and 25,725 – 24,300 on the Bank Nifty and Nifty, respectively. Trade light with strict stop losses. Avoid trading counters with spreads wider than 8 ticks. Vijay is the CEO a proprietary trading firm. He tweets at @vijaybhambwani
