Bitcoin Surges Above $80,000 After Markets Experience ‘Amazing Jump'

Forbes09-04-2025
Bitcoin prices climbed sharply today as markets processed the latest tariff updates.
Bitcoin prices rallied today, climbing over 10% in under 24 hours after President Donald Trump's announcement that he would 'pause' tariffs caused an 'amazing jump' in the global asset markets, according to analyst Tim Enneking.
The digital currency rose to roughly $83,000 this afternoon, according to Coinbase data from TradingView. The benchmark S&P 5oo index and the Dow Jones Industrial average also experienced sharp gains, rising more than 9% and 7% during the day, according to data from Google Finance.
In addition, many altcoins underwent notable price increases, rising between 10% and 30% in the space of 24 hours, CoinMarketCap figures show. The TikTok influencer who goes by Wendy O commented on the situation, emphasizing 'across the board' gains in these cryptocurrencies.
When asked whether Trump's policy change triggered the latest gains in bitcoin, Enneking, managing partner of Psalion, stated via email that 'Yes, the 90-pause was hugely important and the sole proximate cause of the amazing jump across almost all markets in two ways.'
'The first was what we just witnessed: immediately concerns regarding the absurdly high tariffs have now been removed (with the major exception of China, where the tariffs actually got worse),' Enneking said after Trump posted via social media network Truth Social that while he would start imposing a tariff of 125% on China, tariffs on other countries would drop to 10%.
'More importantly, however, was the fact that Trump and most (but not all) of his administration's representatives have insisted that the tariffs were immutable and not a bargaining tool,' he stated.
'No one really believed that in their heart of hearts, knowing Trump's negotiating 'style,' but the fear that tariffs were 'here to stay come may' was starting to gain traction – and markets were pummeled as a result," Enneking added.
'Now we know it is possible to persuade Trump to back down, which means that we're back to tariffs as a bargaining tool. The sign of relief from seeing a solid example of that fact can literally be heard around the world!' he said.
When asked whether Trump's tariff announcement was the cause today's bitcoin gains, Joe DiPasquale, CEO of cryptocurrency hedge fund manager BitBull Capital, offered a similar take.
'Yes, we agree that Bitcoin's rally reflects the broader risk-on mood sparked by Trump's tariff pause, which markets interpreted as a temporary easing of trade tensions," he said via email.
However, he emphasized that bitcoin has been displaying a high correlation to other risk assets like stocks. This development contrasts with earlier times, when the digital currency didn't follow the price movements of assets like stocks.
'Despite being touted as a hedge or store of value, Bitcoin continues to behave like a high-beta risk asset—often outperforming during bursts of macro optimism," said DiPasquale.
"Today's move was less about crypto fundamentals and more about a broad shift in sentiment across equities and digital assets.'
Brett Sifling, wealth manager for Gerber Kawasaki Wealth & Investment Management, also offered his perspective on the situation, offering his views via email.
'Earlier today, Trump announced a 90 day pause on most of the tariffs besides China. This caused an immediate spike in risk-on assets across most markets, including Bitcoin, that resulted in one of the 10 best percentage returns day in the history of the S&P 500,' he stated.
'This is likely a combination of short-term oversold conditions, short covering, and reassessment after the worst-case scenario was already being priced in,' said Sifling.
'We expect the volatility is likely to continue, as this story is continuing to develop," he concluded.

Zelenskiy, flanked by Europe, heads to Washington as Trump presses for Russia deal

By Max Hunder KYIV (Reuters) -Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European leaders will meet Donald Trump in Washington on Monday to map out a peace deal amid fears the U.S. president could try to pressure Kyiv into accepting a settlement favourable to Moscow. The European leaders of Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Finland and NATO hope to shore up Zelenskiy at a crucial diplomatic moment in the war and prevent any repetition of the bad-tempered Oval Office encounter between Trump and Ukraine's leader in February. Trump will meet first with Zelenskiy at 1:15 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (1715 GMT) in the Oval Office and then with all the European leaders together in the White House's East Room at 3 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT), the White House said. After rolling out the red carpet for Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, Trump said an agreement should be struck to end the 42-month-long war which has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions. "Russia is a very big power, and they're not," Trump said of Ukraine afterwards. However, Zelenskiy has already all but rejected the outline of Putin's proposals at that meeting, including for Ukraine to give up the rest of its eastern Donetsk region, of which it currently controls a quarter. "We need real negotiations, which means we can start where the front line is now," the Ukrainian leader said in Brussels on Sunday, adding that his country's constitution made it impossible for him to give away territory. More concerning for him is the fact that Trump, who previously favoured Kyiv's proposal for an immediate ceasefire to conduct deeper peace talks, reversed course after the summit and indicated support for Russia's favoured approach of negotiating a comprehensive deal while fighting rumbles on. "I am grateful to the President of the United States for the invitation. We all equally want to end this war swiftly and reliably," Zelenskiy said on the Telegram messaging app after arriving in Washington late on Sunday. "Russia must end this war — the war it started. And I hope that our shared strength with America and with our European friends will compel Russia to real peace." The outline of Putin's proposals, reported by Reuters earlier, appears impossible for Zelenskiy to accept. Ukrainian forces are deeply dug into the Donetsk region, whose towns and hills serve as a crucial defensive zone to stymie Russian attacks. As part of any peace deal, Kyiv wants security guarantees sufficient to deter Russia, which took Ukraine's Crimean peninsula in 2014 and launched a full invasion in 2022, from attacking again. Fearing that they would be shut out of the conversation after a summit to which they were not invited, European leaders held a call with Zelenskiy on Sunday to align on a common strategy for the meeting with Trump on Monday. The presence of six allies to back Zelenskiy may alleviate painful memories of Zelenskiy's last Oval Office visit. "It's important for the Europeans to be there: (Trump) respects them, he behaves differently in their presence," Oleksandr Merezhko, a Ukrainian lawmaker from Zelenskiy's ruling party, told Reuters. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking to CBS, dismissed the idea that the European leaders were coming to Washington to protect Zelenskiy. "They're not coming here tomorrow to keep Zelenskiy from being bullied. They're coming here tomorrow because we've been working with the Europeans," he said. "We invited them to come." Relations between Kyiv and Washington, once extremely close, have been rocky since Trump took office in January. However, Ukraine's pressing need for U.S. weapons and intelligence sharing, some of which have no viable alternative, has forced Zelenskiy and his allies on the continent to appease Trump, even when his statements appear contradictory to their objectives. On the battlefield Russia has been slowly grinding forward, pressing home its advantages in men and firepower. Putin says he is ready to continue fighting until his military objectives are achieved. Ukraine hopes that the changing technological nature of the war and its ability to inflict massive casualties on Moscow will allow it to hold out, supported by European financial and military aid even if relations with Washington collapse. Asian shares mostly gain as eyes turn to meetings at the White House and Jackson Hole

BANGKOK (AP) — Asian shares were mostly higher Monday after U.S. stocks edged back from their record levels on Friday. U.S. futures were little changed as investors watched for developments in the Ukraine crisis following a summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin that brought no breakthroughs. Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 0.9% to 43.776.38, while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong added 0.3% to 25,344.48. The Shanghai Composite index jumped 1.2% to 3,740.50. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was virtually unchanged, while the Kospi in South Korea declined 1.3% to 3,184.17. Trump was preparing to meet later Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders in Washington. The European vanguard were not included in Trump's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin last Friday. They are seeking to present a united front in safeguarding Ukraine and the continent from any widening aggression from Moscow. An annual meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, of top central bankers later this week is also drawing attention. Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell is due to speak Friday at the economic policy conference. Expectations have been building that the Fed will cut interest rates at its next meeting in September, though mixed reports on the U.S. economy have undercut those bets somewhat. One report Friday said shoppers boosted their spending at U.S. retailers last month, while another said manufacturing in New York state unexpectedly grew. A third said industrial production across the country shrank last month, when economists were looking for modest growth. Yet another report suggested sentiment among U.S. consumers is worsening because of worries about inflation, when economists expected to see a slight improvement. On Wall Street, UnitedHealth Group jumped 12% on Friday after famed investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway said it bought nearly 5 million shares of the insurer during the spring, valued at $1.57 billion. Buffett is known for trying to buy good stocks at affordable prices, and UnitedHealth's halved for the year by the end of July because of a run of struggles. Berkshire Hathaway's own stock slipped 0.4%. Applied Materials helped lead Wall Street lower with a decline of 14.1% even though it reported better results for the latest quarter than analysts expected. The focus was on the company's forecast for a drop in revenue during the current quarter. Its products help manufacture semiconductors and advanced displays, and CEO Gary Dickerson pointed to a 'dynamic macroeconomic and policy environment, which is creating increased uncertainty and lower visibility in the near term, including for our China business.' Sandisk fell 4.6% despite reporting a profit for the latest quarter that blew past analysts' expectations. Investors focused instead on the data storage company's forecast for profit in the current quarter, which came up short of Wall Street's. The U.S. dollar rose to 147.38 Japanese yen from 147.18 yen. The euro was unchanged at $1.1703.
