This £8 supermarket shampoo works as well as the luxury versions
As a beauty editor with long, thick hair, I've tried all sorts of shampoos, conditioners, hair masks and styling products in my time. The rise of luxury haircare – a booming market that is predicted to rise in value to $32 billion by 2032 – has meant that I've become a devotee to expensive formulas. Favourites include Virtue (the Recovery shampoo and conditioner are brilliant), Kérastase (you can't go wrong with any one of its hair masks) and Oribe, a luxe, excellently packaged brand that has seen a 28 per cent rise in sales at Cult Beauty in the past year. From its Mirror Rinse Glass Hair Treatment to the Gold Lust Repair and Restore collection, the average price for a shampoo may be £48, but I'm still a member of the fan club.
So how would I fare when I swapped them for formulas that cost less than £10? I approached my quest with some trepidation, but I was interested to see what results I could achieve, not least because my skincare routine mainly consists of high street favourites which really work. After just one wash and rough dry, I was pleasantly surprised – so much so that some of the product I tried will remain in my daily routine from here on.
What I have learnt – perhaps to my shame, after so many years enjoying the luxe stuff – is that a low price doesn't mean you have to scrimp on efficacy. Far from it. So, here are some of the formulas I tried, tested and really rate. They all deliver on smell, feel and ease of use; the only difference is that the packaging isn't quite as fancy.

Best for colour-treated hair
When it comes to using affordable shampoo, my big concern is always whether it will strip my (professional) hair colour, leaving it brassy and dull. I needn't have worried with L'Oréal Paris's new Elvive shampoo, which promises first-day colour for up to 40 washes. I haven't yet been able to test it for that time period, but what I can say is my colour looks rich and my hair feels soft and silky. With a derivative of vitamin C and UV filters, it's also great for protecting hair from pollution, sunlight and other external aggressors that can have an impact on hair. The conditioner is great too.

UK consumer sentiment recovers to strongest level since October
Sentiment among UK consumers recovered to its strongest level since before the autumn budget last year, according to new figures. The latest monthly S&P Global UK Consumer Sentiment Index found that surveyed consumers were still relatively downbeat but saw sentiment move higher after the latest cut to interest rates. Earlier this month, the Bank of England voted to cut its base interest rate from 4.25% to 4%. The CSI, which surveys more than 1,500 households, reported a reading of 47.0 for August, rising from 45.1 in July. The reading is the highest since October. Any reading below 50 points to negative sentiment, with a reading above 50 suggesting positive feeling among consumers. Households reported the strongest sentiment about their personal finances for 13 months, although this remained in firmly negative territory. There was also an improvement about how households viewed the labour market, with rises in job security and activity at work. Maryam Baluch, economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said: 'August CSI data comes hot on the heels of the recent rate cut decision made by the Bank of England earlier in the month. 'Data collection began just a day after the central bank's announcement, providing a timely snapshot of sentiment in the wake of monetary policy easing. 'Encouragingly, the data reveals a slight revival in household confidence, which is a telling sign that the easing of monetary policy has been received positively by households across the country.'

Department for Education (DfE) statistics reveal that it costs an average of £442 to equip a child for secondary school and £343 for primary school. To address this issue, the government is tackling rising uniform expenses through its proposed Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which will restrict the number of branded - and consequently more costly - items schools can include on uniform lists, giving parents flexibility to purchase cheaper alternatives. In recent years, supermarket clothing ranges such as Tu at Sainsbury's, George at Asda, and F&F at Tesco have joined Matalan and other budget retailers in expanding their uniform collections to challenge the higher prices of high street brands like M&S and Next. However, a consumer expert has highlighted a method to save even more on budget uniform, bringing the cost down to match Aldi's sold-out £5 uniform bundle, reports the Mirror. Abigail Yearley, director at TopCashback, explained that whilst parents can often feel relief when children return to school in September, expenses can rapidly accumulate and become 'overwhelming.' She explained: "There's often a long list of things to replace such as outgrown uniforms, broken stationery and worn-out shoes. Fortunately, back-to-school doesn't have to cost a fortune.
