Wayne Rooney 'disappointed' with Tom Brady over work ethic comments in documentary

Yahoo8 hours ago
LONDON (AP) — England soccer great Wayne Rooney has some beef with Tom Brady after some pointed comments by the NFL superstar in a fly-on-the-wall documentary.
Brady became a minority owner of English club Birmingham City in 2023 and was involved in a docuseries — 'Built in Birmingham' — that went behind the scenes at the team that was briefly managed by Rooney, the former Manchester United forward.
In one clip that quickly spread over social media, Brady said he was 'a little worried about our head coach's work ethic.' That remark referred to Rooney, who lasted just 83 days as manager before being fired as Birmingham slipped down the second-tier Championship.
Rooney has responded to the seven-time Super Bowl champion in his new role as a pundit for the BBC, saying Brady's comment was 'very unfair.'
'Tom came in once, which was the day before a game, which is a little bit lighter anyway,' Rooney said in an interview with the BBC published on Thursday, 'and I don't think he really understood football that well at the time. Maybe he does now.
'But what he does understand is that he's a hard worker. We know that. So that's why I'm really disappointed with the comment, because football is not NFL. NFL works for three months in a year, players do need rest as well, so I think he was very unfair in the way he's come out and portrayed that.'
Birmingham was relegated in that campaign but secured immediate promotion last season and is back in the Championship — one league away from the Premier League.
'Listen, I respect Tom Brady massively — he's one of the greatest, if not the greatest athlete of all time,' Rooney said. 'And Birmingham do look like they are getting it right now, which is good.'

Brian Flores' lawsuit against New York Giants can proceed, Circuit Court rules

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan has upheld a previous ruling by Judge Valerie Caproni, allowing Brian Flores' claims against the NFL and three of its teams, including the New York Giants, to proceed. In addition to the Giants, the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos are named in the lawsuit that was initially filed in 2022, claiming the league was "rife with racism" and that the hiring/promotion of minority coaches is intentionally flawed. ESPN reports that the decision came on Thursday. The NFL can be put on trial over civil claims that Brian Flores and other Black coaches face discrimination, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday, finding insurmountable flaws with a league arbitration process that would permit commissioner Roger Goodell to serve as arbitrator. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan upheld Judge Valerie Caproni's ruling that Flores can proceed with claims against the league and three teams: the Denver Broncos, the New York Giants and the Houston Texans. In a decision written by Circuit Judge Jose A. Cabranes, the appeals court said the NFL's arbitration rules forcing Flores to submit his claims to arbitration before Goodell do not have the protection of the Federal Arbitration Act because they provide for "arbitration in name only." At the time of his original filing, Flores claimed he was "humiliated" by the Giants for running him through a "sham interview." The team had just hired Brian Daboll as their next head coach, choosing him over Flores, who was a finalist for the job. Flores was informed of the Giants' decision through an accidental text by then-New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Giants co-owner John Mara denied Flores' claims, defended the decision to hire Daboll, and vowed to fight the allegations in court. "I'm not settling," Mara said at the time, via the New York Post. "Because the allegations are false and we're very comfortable with our hiring process. It was a fair process and we ended up making the decision we made based on a lot of factors, none of which had anything to do with race." Flores, who currently serves as defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings, felt he was risking his NFL career after the filing, but claimed it would be worth the trouble to help establish better hiring practices for minority coaches. "The significance of the Second Circuit's decision cannot be overstated," Flores' attorneys -- Douglas H. Wigdor, David E. Gottlieb and John Elefterakis -- said in a statement. "For too long, the NFL has relied on a fundamentally biased and unfair arbitration process -- even in cases involving serious claims of discrimination. This ruling sends a clear message: that practice must end. This is a victory not only for NFL employees, but for workers across the country -- and for anyone who believes in transparency, accountability and justice." The NFL sees things differently. "We respectfully disagree with the panel's ruling, and will be seeking further review," spokesperson Brian McCarthy said. The Giants have yet to issue a statement following Thursday's ruling.

How a quirk of wartime football led to an extra list of AP All-Americans during the 1940s

Here is a trivia question that should stump your friends: A football player named Dick Todd once made an AP All-America team the year AFTER winning an NFL title. How was such a thing possible? The answer is that in 1943, Todd played for a service team — a quirk of wartime football that led some NFL players back to college football. Sort of. During World War II, military posts in the U.S. fielded football teams of their own. These weren't college teams in any traditional sense, but they were part of the college game. In addition to facing each other, they took on college programs and were included in AP team rankings. The AP, at least in 1943 and 1944, also named a service All-America team in addition to its more traditional one for college players that began in 1925. That's how Todd, who was on Washington's 1942 NFL championship team, became an AP military service All-American in 1943. He played for Iowa Pre-Flight, which finished that season ranked No. 2 in the AP poll — between No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 3 Michigan. 'There were some very strong teams,' said College Football Hall of Fame historian Denis Crawford, who noted that service teams also existed in World War I. That's how the 1918 Rose Bowl came to pit Camp Lewis (Army) against Mare Island (Marines). After making the college All-America team in 1943 with Northwestern, future Hall of Famer Otto Graham was named to the service All-America team the following year with North Carolina Pre-Flight. Bruce Smith won the 1941 Heisman Trophy as a running back for Minnesota. He later played for both Great Lakes Naval and St. Mary's Pre-Flight. The transfer portal was wild back then. Randolph Field played Texas to a 7-7 tie in the 1944 Cotton Bowl, with former Tulsa star Glenn Dobbs throwing a touchdown pass. Since the service teams could include ex-college stars and players with NFL experience, perhaps it's no surprise that facing them could be a challenge. Top-ranked Notre Dame was the AP's national champion in 1943 despite losing its only game to a Great Lakes (Navy) team ranked No. 6. Crawford said he isn't aware of any major backlash to the idea of putting college players up against pros. Just keeping the sport going during the war was hard enough. 'I didn't run across a lot of articles bemoaning this," Crawford said. "I think people were just happy to have the distraction.' Wartime football games were just one part of the relationship between the military and U.S. colleges. Training programs could help bring more people to campus — which schools certainly could use. 'The V-5 and V-12 programs had a direct impact on helping a lot of college football teams survive, and in the case of Notre Dame, helping the university survive," Crawford said. "To this day, that's why Navy and Notre Dame play every year. Notre Dame has a debt of gratitude to Navy for putting one of the V programs in South Bend, which kept that school humming.'

Premier League Soccer: Livestream Every Game of the 2025-26 Season From Anywhere

The world's most-watched soccer league returns this week with what looks set to be the most competitive English Premier League season in recent memory. Below, we'll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch Premier League games as they happen, wherever you are in the world, and how to use a VPN if it's not available where you are. Despite ending last season with a clear 10-point lead, Liverpool comes into this new campaign with a significantly overhauled squad. Big-money summer signings Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitiké and Florian Wirtz replace the outgoing Trent Alexander-Armstrong, Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz. Having seen its recent dominance upended with a surprisingly meek campaign last time out, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City has also dipped heavily into the transfer market this summer, with left back Rayan Ait-Nouri, goalkeeper James Trafford, Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and exciting French winger Rayan Cherki all brought in. Winner of this summer's FIFA Club World Cup, Chelsea will be seen by many as one of Liverpool's main threats, while London rivals Arsenal will be hopeful of finally going one step further after three successive second-place finishes, having added significant reinforcements, too. Leeds, Burnley and Sunderland join the league this year, with the northern trio aiming to defy the growing pattern of promoted teams tumbling straight back to the Championship. Kicking off with the opening fixture of Liverpool vs. Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday, Aug. 14 (kickoff is at 12 p.m. PT, 3 p.m. ET, 8 p.m. BST and 5 a.m. AEST), the new season runs until the final fixtures on Sunday, May 24, 2026. Below, we'll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch game lives wherever you are in the world.
