Mets option slumping C Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A
June 22 - Once a highly touted prospect, New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday in the wake of his offensive struggles this season.
Alvarez, 23, baseball's No. 1 prospect in 2022 who hit 25 home runs as a rookie in 2023, is hitting just .236 with three homers and 11 RBIs in 35 games this season.
In a corresponding move, the Mets recalled Hayden Senger to serve as the backup to starter Luis Torrens.
After making a splash as a 21-year-old rookie, Alvarez has been hampered by multiple wrist and hand injuries and regressed last year.
In parts of four seasons with the Mets since debuting in 2022, Alvarez is a .223 hitter with 40 homers and 122 RBIs in 263 games.
The 28-year-old Senger made his major league debut this season with the Mets, appearing in 13 games and hitting .179 in 28 at-bats.

Bradley overhauls Fleetwood on final hole to win Travelers Championship
The US Ryder Cup captain, Keegan Bradley, birdied the final hole of the Travelers Championship and soared past England's Tommy Fleetwood to win the tournament in a stunning finale in Cromwell, Connecticut. Bradley shot a two-under-par 68 for a four-round total of 15 under to win by one stroke over Fleetwood (72) and Russell Henley (69). Bradley, a native of New England and playing in what he considers his home tournament, thrilled the huge crowd on the final hole at TPC River Highlands by sinking a six-foot birdie putt. Fleetwood, who left an approach shot short, had just missed a par putt from inside seven feet for a two-shot swing. Fleetwood, who began the day with a three-shot lead, appeared to have recovered after a ragged opening stretch. Instead, Bradley won for the first time since last year's BMW Championship. Fleetwood has won seven times on the DP World Tour, but he is still without a victory in 159 PGA Tour events. The Englishman recorded three bogeys and a birdie across the first four holes on Sunday after registering only one bogey during the first three rounds. Fleetwood and Bradley were all square through nine holes, with Bradley's 64-foot putt on the ninth giving him a birdie. But Fleetwood birdies on the 11th and 13th gave him a three-shot advantage with four holes to play. When Bradley rolled in a 37-foot birdie putt on the 15th, he moved to two strokes back. The margin was one shot when Fleetwood bogeyed the 16th, and it stayed that way until the 18th.

Jose Iglesias the hero as Padres escape Royals
June 22 - Jose Iglesias' RBI infield single in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday lifted the San Diego Padres to a 3-2 win over the visiting Kansas City Royals. Luis Arraez started the winning rally with a leadoff single off Daniel Lynch IV (3-2) and Xander Bogaerts lined a one-out double to left-center to push Arraez to third. Kansas City inserted John Schneider to face Iglesias but he slapped an 0-2 pitch up the middle. Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. gloved it but his off-balance throw home wasn't in time. Robert Suarez (2-3) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win, getting help from his defense. Freddy Fermin ripped a two-out double to right-center after Drew Waters walked. But Waters was called out at home for running out of the baseline after missing the plate as he dove to avoid the tag of catcher Elias Diaz. Iglesias pinch-hit in the seventh inning and tied the game on a two-run single to right. That hit no-decisioned both starters after strong outings. Kansas City's Seth Lugo allowed just two hits and a run in 6 1/3 innings with no walks and seven strikeouts, while San Diego's Randy Vasquez pitched a season-high seven innings, yielding five hits and two runs with two walks and two strikeouts. The first 6 1/2 innings were dominated completely by pitching, except for a mistake in the top of the sixth by Vasquez. After Vinnie Pasquantino's one-out single, Salvador Perez pounced on a cutter that drifted over the middle. He yanked it an estimated 412 feet over the wall in left-center, his ninth homer. Lugo mowed down 18 straight hitters after Fernando Tatis Jr. slapped a leadoff single in the first. But the Padres got a leadoff double from Jackson Merrill in the seventh, then tied it against the Royals' bullpen. Angel Zerpa issued two-out walks to Gavin Sheets and Bogaerts to fill the bases. After Iglesias was announced as a pinch-hitter for Jake Cronenworth, Kansas City lifted Zerpa for Lucas Erceg. But Iglesias poked an 0-2 pitch to right to score Merrill and Sheets, evening the score at 2. --Field Level Media

Tommy Fleetwood denied first PGA Tour win on last hole at Travelers Championship
Tommy Fleetwood suffered a heart-breaking one-shot defeat at the final hole of the Travelers Championship in Connecticut as American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley denied the Englishman a maiden PGA Tour victory. Fleetwood had been defending a three-shot lead following his flawless 63 on Saturday, sitting at 16 under par ahead of Bradley and Russell Henley. However, a couple of early bogeys threatened to derail his bid to end his record of the most top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without claiming a title. The 34-year-old, though, steadied himself around the turn to edge back ahead of Bradley with birdies at the 11th and 13th. Having found a path on the right of the 15th before going on to save par, Fleetwood looked to be on course once again – only to drop another shot at the 16th. Fleetwood then came up short of the green with his second shot on the 18th. Spurred on by a partisan home crowd, Bradley promptly sent his follow-up to within a few feet. Fleetwood's birdie attempt fell short just behind Bradley's marker, with the Englishman then missing his par putt, having to settle for a bogey and a two-over final round. The American – who could yet qualify as a playing captain at Bethpage Black in September – then nervelessly rolled in a birdie to finish at 15 under, sparking wild celebrations around the 18th green. 'I feel like from where I was, I should at least be in a play-off,' Fleetwood said. 'I didn't really feel like I hit that many bad shots execution-wise, just sort of a couple of bad decisions and didn't clean 'em up, which is pretty poor and things that I have to work on.' Fleetwood added: 'I haven't been in this situation for a while. When it sort of calms down – I am upset now, I am angry – but when it calms down, I will look at the things that I did well and look at the things that I can learn from. 'I did plenty of things well enough this week to win, but I didn't do that and it hurts.' Henley chipped in from the edge of the green on the 18th to secure a tie for second with Fleetwood at 14 under. Harris English and Australian Jason Day finished at 13 under in a tie for fourth. World number one Scottie Scheffler and Masters champion Rory McIlroy both shot five-under-par final rounds to get to 12 under and finish in a share of sixth place. Newly-crowned US Open champion JJ Spaun had the best round of the day, starting off at the 10th, as he carded a seven-under 63 to climb up into the top 15. Viktor Hovland had earlier withdrawn on the third hole of his final round because of a neck injury.
