Astros All-Star Closer Josh Hader Place On 15-Day Disabled List With Shoulder Strain
The move, retroactive to Monday, comes after the left-hander reported shoulder discomfort before Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox.
"It's (a) punch in the gut," manager Joe Espada said.. "But ... he's seeing doctors right now. We're getting more tests done and hopefully this is not going to be a long-term thing."
Espada added that they don't yet know the severity of the injury and should know more after additional testing.
Espada said he would not name a closer to fill in while Hader is out, but would use his relievers based on matchups.
"I feel good about all those guys," Espada said.
Hader, who is in his second season in Houston, is 6-2 with a 2.05 ERA and is tied for third in the majors with 28 saves in 48 appearances this season.
To take his spot on the roster, the AL West-leading Astros reinstated right-hander Shawn Dubin from the 15-day injured list. They also designated right-hander Hector Neris for assignment and recalled left-hander Colton Gordon from Triple-A Sugar Land.

Young got the final out of the inning and Baltimore's Yaramil Hiraldo pitched the ninth as Young picked up the first victory of his career in a familiar spot. Magic rookie Jase Richardson hit the gym with Desmond Bane, others
Orlando Magic guard Jase Richardson was spotted in the gym in photos posted by the team on social media in preparation for his upcoming rookie campaign. Richardson was seen working out alongside Desmond Bane, Jonathan Isaac and Tyus Jones at the AdventHealth Training Center. Several players have been in and out of the practice facility throughout the summer, with Richardson among the latest to get in some work. The offseason period is a great chance for incoming rookies to hit the court with their new teammates to build chemistry. After playing with a few roster players in summer league, Richardson had the opportunity to get on the court with some of the veterans. Richardson was named to the All-Big Ten third team last season at Michigan State, averaging 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists on 41.2% shooting from 3-point range as a freshman. He ranked ninth in the country in box plus-minus (plus-11.6) and 14th in offensive rating (132). The 19-year-old debuted with the Magic in the NBA Summer League, averaging 16.5 points, 2.5 assists, 1.5 rebounds and one block on 55.6% shooting from the field in two appearances. He produced 19 points and four assists in his last game on July 13. Richardson projects to check a lot of boxes for the Magic and was a player they were even looking at with the 16th pick before trading it away. He faces an uphill battle vying for rotational minutes, but he appeared to pass the test in his first action this summer.

Commanders activate Terry McLaurin off the PUP list as contract extension talks linger
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Commanders activated Terry McLaurin off the physically unable to perform list on Saturday amid lingering contract extension talks with the All-Pro wide receiver. McLaurin, who is entering the final year of a three-year, $68.2 million contract signed in 2022, reported to the team on July 27 after skipping the initial four days of training camp and June's mandatory minicamp. That turned a holdout to a hold-in but has not necessarily accelerated extension talks or returned McLaurin to practice. The team placed its top target on the PUP list with an ankle injury, and McLaurin requested a trade on July 31. McLaurin and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels fueled an offense that ranked fifth in points scored last season and carried the Commanders to a 12-5 regular-season record and the franchise's first NFC championship game appearance since 1991. They haven't built off that success in camp with the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the New York Giants approaching. Three other offensive starters have missed significant time with injuries. The activation comes one day after offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury expressed a desire to work with a full lineup.
