A nightmare situation has unfolded for a 72-year-old dad walking his dog in Melbourne.
Five-year-old Morticia, known as 'Morti', was stolen from her owner Boguslaw Gawrysiak by a group of youths in a distressing situation in Mount Waverley.
Mr Gawrysiak was walking Morti along Huntingdale Road at about 2.30am when a black Holden Commodore with five young people, who looked to be in their late teens and early 20s, approached.
Mr Gawrysiak's daughter Ewa Gawrysiak told news.com.au those in the car started yelling demands for Morti like 'we want the dog' and 'give us the dog'.
Morticia was stolen while on a walk in the early hours of Friday.
She is a five-year-old Staffy cross.
'[Dad] blew it off as drunks coming home after a night out,' Ewa said, explaining her family were shift workers and it wasn't unusual for her dad to walk the dog after finishing work in the early hours of the morning.
But then, she said, they came to a stop and at least one person appeared to exit the car.
Mr Gawrysiak ran into a nearby convenience store on Waverley Road in Chadstone.
Ewa said her dad was 'hiding' with Morti in the store when the two young women and three young men all confronted him.
She said her dad tried to pull Morti back as one of the women patted her saying how 'cute' she was, but then the dog was unhooked from her lead as Mr Gawrysiak was pushed away by others in the group.
Morticia was adopted by the Gawrysiak family in 2022.
They say she is 'an oversized lapdog'.
Ewa Gawrysiak said her sister, who adopted Morti from the RSPCA in 2022, was 'heartbroken' and was now trying to get home to Australia.
Morti is a white English staffordshire terrier cross.
Ewa described her as 'oversized lapdog' and 'a giant snuggle buddy' who loves people and is 'so sympathetic to their emotions'.
Victoria Police is investigating and said the Commodore had no plates and was last seen driving south on Huntingdale Road.

A pedophile primary school teacher who sexually assaulted five female students, often during class, will spend at least four years behind bars after pleading guilty to the vile abuse that 'ruined lives'. Peter Farmer, 66, was sentenced on Tuesday, more than 30 years after abusing 'fragile and innocent' young girls he taught at a school in Victoria's southeast. He was sentenced after pleading guilty to eight charges of indecent assault of a person under 16 and two charges of gross indecency with a person under 16. The offending took place at a Gippsland primary school where Farmer taught from 1982-1988. Farmer forced the girls to touch his penis and touched their vaginas while working as a teacher at Murray Road Primary School, now called Newborough Primary School. The court heard Farmer put his fingers inside one victim's pants every day for two terms, even when she was showing her work to the rest of the class. A victim impact statement read to the court revealed another victim felt so guilty and ashamed about being abused by Farmer that she was unable to speak about what happened, even when asked by her mother. The victim said her mother had come to her 'in a panic' after first hearing about Farmer's offending. 'She said 'he didn't do anything to you, did he?,' she wrote. 'I told her no. 'I didn't want to disappoint her or make her upset.' In a cruel twist, the victim revealed Farmer had taught the class songs including John Farnham's You're the Voice. 'It now makes me cringe,' she said of learning the lyrics. 'I didn't feel like I had a voice.' The victim said she had not spoken about the abuse until she was contacted by police after one of his former students, now aged in their 40s, reported Farmer. She had assumed action had been taken and felt 'deeply guilty' and 'physically sick' that Farmer was not held accountable for his actions until now. 'I still carry the weight of what that assumption may have meant for others.' Farmer's offending ended when someone working nearby saw him taking his hands out of a student's pants and reported him to the school He was banned from the school but returned to leave notes and gifts for students before he officially resigned. Farmer headed north after leaving Newborough Primary School and was arrested in Queensland in 2022 after his offending was reported to police by a former student. Judge Geoffrey Chettle said Farmer's offending caused 'significant and irreparable psychological damage' to his 'young, fragile, innocent' victims. He said the victims had suffered PTSD, severe depression, anxiety and insomnia and felt shame and fear. 'The damage you caused these children has ruined their lives,' Judge Chettle said. 'You enjoyed life in the Queensland sunshine while your victims endured years of distress.' The court heard Farmer was suffering from a pedophilic disorder at the time of his offending. However, Farmer's 'pedophilic interest had declined' with his age and he was now a 'low risk' of recidivism. Judge Chettle took into account Farmer's guilty plea and 'genuine remorse' when sentencing him to six and half years jail with a non parol period of four and half years, minus 103 days served in pre-sentence detention.

Beatriz Brancho Gonzalez and Cristhian Diaz Suarez front Adelaide court on slavery charges
Two Colombian nationals have fronted court on slavery charges, with the pair accused of snatching the passports of victims and abusing them across different jurisdictions in NSW and South Australia. Beatriz Odalis Brancho Gonzalez and Cristhian David Diaz Suarez both returned to Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday following their arrests by Australian Federal Police in late 2024. The duo are accused of keeping their victims in servitude and subjecting them to 'cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment' over eight years. Ms Gonzalez and Mr Diaz Suarez were living at the same Kilburn house in Adelaide's north at the time of the alleged offending and it is expected their cases will be merged. Tuesday's hearing, however, revealed divergent trajectories in their respective cases. Ms Gonzalez appeared in the dock before magistrate Lynette Duncan and pleaded not guilty to the charges against her, specifically two counts of causing a person to enter into debt bondage, two counts of deceptive recruiting for labour or services and two counts of causing a person to enter into and remain in servitude. Her alleged offending took place between February 2016 and May 2024 in the Sydney suburbs of Ultimo, Darlinghurst, Blacktown and Baulkham Hills and the Adelaide suburbs of Seaford, Magill and Kilburn. Commonwealth prosecutor Craig Dand initially asked Ms Duncan for an eight-week adjournment, noting the AFP still needed to submit a forensic accounting report on the alleged enslavement alongside witness statements, Home Affairs records and translations of text messages between the pair from Spanish to English. But Ms Gonzalez's defence lawyer told the court that his client was ready to enter her pleas with the information already provided. The 35-year-old, dressed in tracksuit pants and a jumper, is on bail and left the court following her pleas. She will next appear at the higher District Court for her trial on September 9. The AFP arrested Ms Gonzalez in December last year, one month after Mr Diaz Suarez's arrest. 'It will be alleged in court that the woman was involved in the ongoing and degrading treatment of other residents also living at the property,' the AFP have said. 'This alleged treatment included maintaining daily control of the victims by tracking their movements, restricting daily activities, scheduling compulsory daily chores, controlling earnings and forcing victims to pay off debts that were unreasonably enforced. 'These allegations relate to a number of individuals who migrated to Adelaide from Venezuela in 2015 and 2016, with the offences allegedly taking place over a prolonged period at the Kilburn home and elsewhere in Australia.' Mr Diaz Suarez, on remand, appeared before the court a short time later via videolink. Mr Dand again applied for an eight-week adjournment to account for additional material in the case. Mr Diaz Suarez's defence counsel asked Ms Duncan to dismiss the charges, but the magistrate declined the request and listed August 6 for the new answer charge date. Following his arrest in November, the AFP claimed Mr Diaz Suarez helped members of a youth group he formerly led in Venezuela migrate to Australia in 2015 and then stole their passports and pushed them into servitude. 'The man allegedly maintained daily control of the victims by tracking their movements, restricting daily activity, scheduling compulsory daily chores, controlling earnings and forcing victims to pay off debts that were unreasonably enforced,' the AFP stated. The police also allege he isolated the victims from family and friends, restricted and oversaw their communications and private messages to loved ones and locked them inside cupboards for days on several occasions.
