‘Nothing meaningful done to keep players like Nicholas Pooran like loyal to West Indies': Brian Lara slams cricket board for star player retirements

West Indies cricket legend Brian Lara has slammed the Windies cricket board for not making the right moves to keep players loyal to the Caribbean cricket fraternity. Lara cited the example of Nicholas Pooran, who announced his shock retirement from international cricket recently, aged 29, and said that the players cannot be faulted for opting to make the most of their limited years at their prime in the sport for lucrative franchise league contracts.
Lara, who remains the prolific Caribbean batter in international cricket with 22,260 runs said that the West Indies' board's failure in incentivising their star players has led them to the steep decline, exemplified by a harrowing 27 all out to Australia in Jamaica this week, their lowest-score in Test history.
'You have a lot of guys who are deciding on what to do with their careers. You have your aggressive players like Pooran, who retired at 29. And honestly, it's pretty clear why they did. There are five or six leagues around the world, and they're able to make a substantial amount of money playing in them,' Brian Lara said on the 'Stick to Cricket' podcast alongside former England players Phil Tuffnell, David Lloyd, Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook.
'I have no problem with that. The truth is, I don't think the West Indies Cricket Board or the administration has done anything meaningful to keep players loyal to West Indies cricket, unlike what boards in countries like England, Australia, or even India have done,' he added
'So naturally, our players are going to look elsewhere. And when you see players like Kane Williamson or even South Africans making similar choices, you understand that these guys are just trying to provide for their families.'
Following Pooran's retirement, T20 heavyweight Andre Russell has also announced his decision to retire from the international circuit, just six months out from the next T20 World Cup. The 37-year-old Russell is set to bid goodbye after the upcoming two T20Is against Australia.
On Tuesday, following the team's ignominious 0-3 series defeat to Australia, Cricket West Indies president Dr Kishore Shallow said that the board will have an emergency meeting to review the series.
Shallow confirmed that invitations were sent out to Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Lara for the meeting to help West Indies wade through the struggle. 'This engagement is not ceremonial. These are men who helped define our golden eras, and their perspectives will be invaluable as we shape the next phase of our cricket development. We intend for this gathering to result in tangible, actionable recommendations,' he added.

'It was not intentional,' says Pratika Rawal on England shoulder contact

India batter Pratika Rawal on Friday clarified that her shoulder contact with England cricketers during the first Women's ODI was "not intentional" after she was fined and handed one demerit point by the ICC. The ICC had earlier imposed a 10 per cent match fee fine and handed a demerit point to Rawal for breaching its Code of Conduct, saying the Indian batter engaged in avoidable physical contact with England's Lauren Filer and Sophie Ecclestone in the 18th and 19th overs. It was not intentional. I was just running in my way and that shoulder barge thing was completely out of... It was not deliberate in that sense, Rawal told the media on the eve of the second ODI here. I don't think there is a (need to have a) reaction to it or maybe (make) a fuss out of it. It was not intentional, she added on the incident that took place at Southampton. England were also fined five per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during the opening ODI which India won by four wickets. The ICC said both Rawal and England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt "accepted their respective sanctions" imposed by the match referee. Rawal said India are focussing on one game at a time given they are coming off a 3-2 win in the five-match T20I series and need only one win from next two matches to win the ODI series. We are taking just one game at a time. Currently, our prime focus is to win this series. To win the next match, we are already up in the series. Our prime focus is to win this series with 3-0, that will be great, she said. Also, what I feel like, keeping one thing at a time, it helps with better focus and better concentration so we are just on that note, she added. The right-handed top-order batter said scoring against teams like England Australia with whom India will play three ODIs before the World Cup at home will give her a lot of confidence. The opener made a 51-ball 36 in the first match that India won by four wickets. Scoring well against teams like England and Australia gives you a lot of confidence and when we get a lot of matches against them, it builds a type of confidence that is required in the upcoming series and matches, Rawal said. It's a great initiative to play as many matches as we can. Also, the fact that the way our team is progressing right now is amazing and there has been a lot of contribution from all the players, she added.

'No Need To Make...': Pratika Rawal's First Reaction After Being Punished By ICC

ICC had imposed a fine and a demerit point on Rawal for breaching its Code of Conduct. India batter Pratika Rawal clarified on Friday that her shoulder contact with England cricketers during the first Women's ODI was 'not intentional" after being fined and handed one demerit point by the ICC. The ICC had earlier imposed a 10 per cent match fee fine and a demerit point on Rawal for breaching its Code of Conduct, stating that the Indian batter engaged in 'avoidable physical contact" with England's Lauren Filer and Sophie Ecclestone in the 18th and 19th overs. 'It was not intentional. I was just running my way, and that shoulder barge was completely unintentional," Rawal told the media ahead of the second ODI. 'I don't think there is a need for a reaction or to make a fuss about it. It was not intentional," she added, referring to the incident in Southampton. England were also fined five per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during the opening ODI, which India won by four wickets. The ICC said both Rawal and England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt 'accepted their respective sanctions" imposed by the match referee. Rawal mentioned that India are focusing on one game at a time, coming off a 3-2 win in the five-match T20I series and needing only one win from the next two matches to clinch the ODI series. 'We are taking it one game at a time. Currently, our main focus is to win this series. Winning the next match would be great as it puts us ahead in the series. Our aim is to win this series 3-0," she said. 'Also, I feel that focusing on one thing at a time helps with better concentration and focus, so we are sticking to that approach," she added. The right-handed top-order batter noted that scoring against teams like England and Australia — with whom India will play three ODIs before the World Cup at home — boosts her confidence. Rawal scored 36 off 51 balls in the first match that India won by four wickets. 'Scoring well against teams like England and Australia gives you a lot of confidence, and playing more matches against them builds the confidence required for upcoming series and matches," Rawal said. 'It's a great initiative to play as many matches as we can. The way our team is progressing right now is amazing, with significant contributions from all players," she added. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
