SAFF U19 Championship: Bangladesh and Nepal cruise into semi-finals
Yupia (Arunachal Pradesh) [India], May 12 (ANI): Bangladesh booked their spot in the SAFF U19 Championship 2025 semi-finals after defeating Bhutan 3-0 in their Group A clash at the Golden Jubilee Stadium on Sunday. In the other match of the day, Nepal began their campaign with a 5-0 demolition of Sri Lanka in Group B. The result confirmed both India and Nepal's progression into the last four.
Bangladesh, with this result, moved on to four points from two matches, after having drawn 2-2 against Maldives in their first match. With the top two from the three-team groups guaranteed a semi-finals spot, Bangladesh are assured of at least a second-placed finish in Group A, as per the AIFF official website.
India and Nepal will battle it out for top spot in Group B on May 13, with the Blue Colts only needing a draw to emerge as group winners. Bhutan will need to beat Maldives on the same day if they are to qualify for the semi-finals.
Right from the start, Bangladesh were in control and showed great attacking intent. Md Mursed Ali gave them the lead in the 13th minute with a composed finish, followed by a goal from Sree Sumon Soran in the 28th minute, which doubled their advantage.
Despite a spirited second-half effort from Bhutan, much like Maldives in Bangladesh's previous game, the Bangladeshi defence held firm. They managed the game well, controlling possession and denying Bhutan any real scoring opportunities. In stoppage time, Nazmul Huda Faysal sealed the win, capitalising on a goalkeeper error to score the third.
After starting on a cautious note initially, Sujan Dangol broke the deadlock in the first half stoppage time, giving Nepal the momentum heading into the break.
Dharbendra Kunwar then doubled the lead in the 62nd minute, before Subash Bam added a third with a fierce left-footed shot in the 76th to put the game beyond Sri Lanka's reach.
Nepal's substitutes added further gloss to the scoreline late in the game. Bigyan Khadka struck in the 89th minute, and Lachhu Thapa completed the rout with an injury-time free-kick into the top corner. With two consecutive losses, Sri Lanka are now officially out of the tournament. (ANI)

The decorated athlete was also the Player of the Year in 2023 in the New Zealand Sevens' division and was a finalist for the World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year. Akuila Rokolisoa roll of honour has seen him win a Gold medal at the Rugby Sevens World Cup in San Francisco, 2018. Four years later, he finished as a Silver medallist with the All Blacks in the Rugby Sevens World Cup in Cape Town in 2022. And in the same year, Akuila Rokolisoa returned with a Bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Having made his debut for New Zealand in 2018, the 30-year-old, who has also won a Gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in 2018, is one of the biggest attacking threats in the sport. In 2023, Rokolisoa rewrote the history books, becoming just the sixth player in the history of the game to score more than 400 points in one season. -Terry Kennedy - Chennai Bulls The 28-year-old Irish man is considered possesses lightning footwork and speed and is one of the most dangerous playmakers on the World Rugby Sevens Series circuit. Terry, whose father also played rugby for Ireland, was the 2022 World Rugby Men's Sevens Player of the Year. The playmaker represented Ireland at the Paris Olympics, 2024, and helped his nation clinch a Bronze medal at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town, 2022, and a Gold medal at the 2023 European Games Terry is one of the 'originals' who were part of the inaugural Ireland squad that started at Europe's C Division in Bosnia in June 2015, and was also a XVs World Cup U20 finalist in 2016. -Rosko Specman - Kalinga Black Tigers The 36-year-old South African is one of the senior statesmen in the sport of rugby, and is a two-time Olympic medallist. Rosko Specman was part of the South African team to have won Bronze at the Olympics in both Rio and Paris. The winger has also won Bronze at the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco. And more recently, he stood on the podium to pick up a Silver Medal at the Africa Men's Sevens in Mauritius, 2024. One of the most loved athletes in the sport, Rosko Specman is well known for his ability to run at the opposition and his natural try scoring ability. Hailing from Makhanda in South Africa, Specman has been playing Rugby Sevens since 2014, and is one of the most experienced players in Season 1 of the RPL. Manu Moreno - Hyderabad Heroes A forward from Spain, the 26-year-old has had a taste of success in the early stages of his career. A European champion in 2021 and 2022, Manu will be one of the focal points of the Hyderabad Heroes' attack in Season 1 of the RPL. A student of medicine outside of playing sport, Manu is noted for his role in Spain's attacking style, characterised by swerving runs and a fizzing passing game, and has been crucial in helping Spain maintain their status in the SVNS top tier. The Spanish forward was also selected among the 14 best rugby sevens players at the World Rugby Sevens Series in Toulouse in May 2023. -Matteo Graziano - Delhi Redz One of the younger players in RPL, Matteo Graziano is a 23-year-old Argentinian Hooker, who is known for his versatility on the field. Graziano has been part of Argentina's dynamic attack, and was an important part of the set-up that eventually secured their first SVNS circuit medal in Hamilton. In January 2025, Argentina were able to retain the HSBC Perth 7s title after thrashing hosts Australia 41-5 in the final, where Matteo Graziano scored a hat-trick. The young man, who hails from a rugby family, was also a part of the Argentina squad at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Jerry Tuwai - Mumbai Dreamers One of the absolute stalwarts of the game, Jerry Tuwai is the only rugby sevens player with two Olympic gold medals (2016 Rio and 2021 Tokyo). In fact, Jerry was part of the Fijian side that won a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in and became the most decorated Olympian in Fiji's history. In the World Rugby Sevens Series, Jerry has captained Fiji in the 2017-18 season and led them to the 2022 Singapore Sevens title, pulling the strings in their 28-17 final win over New Zealand. He recorded 34 clean breaks in the 2019 season, ranking fifth, and was nominated for World Sevens Player of the Year in 2017. Jerry, who made his debut in 2014 for Fiji, was named the best rookie of the sevens circuit season by World Rugby. He was also named World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year in 2019. Sift Kaur Samra wins women's 3P bronze, her 2nd in two years in Munich
Munich [Germany], June 13 (ANI): World record holder Sift Kaur Samra, won bronze in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions (3P), on competition day three of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup (Rifle/Pistol) in Munich, giving India their second medal of the competition. The former world number one shot 453.1 in the final at the Olympic Shooting range, to finish behind Switzerland's Emely Jaeggi, who won silver with 464.8. Norwegian ace Jeanette Hegg Duestad won gold with 466.9. India now has two bronzes from the competition. Sift's second 3P bronze in Munich in as many years came on the back of a gold in the year's first Buenos Aires World Cup in April. In Munich on Thursday, she shot a characteristically strong and consistent qualification round with scores of 197, 199 and 196 each in Kneeling, Prone and the last Standing position respectively, to finish second in a top field. Agathe Girard of France pipped her to the top spot on the same score of 592, but with more shots in the inner 10 ring. While the Olympic champion Chiara Leonne of Switzerland missed out, so did India's Ashi Chouksey, a brilliant 589, giving her a ninth-place finish. Known to be a strong standing shooter in 3P, Sift ended the second Prone series of 15 shots in fourth position, behind Paris silver medalist Sagen Maddalena. Duestad and Emely were in a battle of their own for gold and silver quite early in the 45-shot final. Sagen then faltered in the first series of Standing shots and Sift gleefully accepted the window of opportunity to climb up to third, a position which she clinically maintained with a series of slim and mid to high 10s, right till the end of the penultimate 44th shot. On Friday, day four, the women's 10m Air Pistol final is also on schedule, as is the men's 25m rapid-fire pistol. Nepal and West Indies set to play first bilateral T20I series in September
ANI 13 Jun 2025, 15:09 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): Nepal and the West Indies are set to square off against each other in a three-match T20I series in September in Sharjah, marking the first bilateral series between the two sides. Despite the games being played at a neutral venue, Nepal has been assigned as the series' official host. A statement from Cricket West Indies (CWI) called the series historic and stated that the board's 'engagement reflects its strong commitment to supporting the development of cricket in emerging nations and fostering meaningful partnerships with fellow cricketing boards worldwide.' 'This series is more than just a set of international matches--it's a celebration of the game's expanding global footprint and a testament to what cricket represents: pride, purpose, and the power of unity. As a full-member nation, we see it as part of our responsibility to contribute to the development of cricket beyond our borders,' CWI CEO Chris Dehring said in a statement by the CWI. 'Supporting Nepal in this key phase of their cricketing journey not only builds the sport at the grassroots and international levels but also reminds us of the deep pride and honour associated with representing our nation and wearing our national colours. We are proud to stand with Nepal at this moment in their history and look forward to exciting and competitive cricket in Sharjah,' Dehring added. The series will kick off on September 27, followed by the second T20I on the next day, and the three-match affair will conclude on September 30. All matches will be played at the same venue in Sharjah. CWI extended 'its sincere thanks to the Cricket Association of Nepal and the Emirates Cricket Board for their collaboration in organising the series and looks forward to continuing to work together towards advancing the global growth and accessibility of the game of cricket.'
