SUF condoles demise of senior SAD leader Dhindsa
The condolence meeting was held under the chairmanship of Sudershan Singh Wazir, chairman of Sikh United Front of J&K.
He expressed his grief over the demise of senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Dhindsa.
Dhindsa was a Rajya Sabha MP from 1998 to 2004 and from 2010 to 2022. He was also Shiromani Akali Dal Lok Sabha MP from Sangrur in 2004.
He was the Union minister of sports, chemicals and fertilisers during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and also a four-time MLA. He also served as a cabinet minister of Punjab.
Wazir said that Dhindsa was a visionary leader, an experienced parliamentarian and a person who lived a life dedicated to public service.
He always had a grassroots level connect with Punjab, its people and culture. He served Sikh Panth and Punjab for many years and was a dignified leader who served Punjab with integrity and dedication, added Wazir.
Various leaders of the Sikh community paid their heartfelt tribute and respect to the late leader and also prayed to the almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give strength to the family.

Longowal's 40th death anniversary: SAD factions hold parallel rallies in show of strength
The two Akali Dal factions on Wednesday put up a show of strength by holding parallel rallies to mark the 40th death anniversary of former Shiromani Akali Dal president Sant Harchand Singh Longowal in Sangrur. This was the first political rally by the breakaway SAD faction, led by Giani Harpreet Singh, since its formation on August 11. Addressing their supporters, both groups launched blistering attacks on each other, with SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal dubbing the Giani Harpreet group as 'Centre's stooge'. The latter termed the Badal camp as a 'group of deserters who have no right to be in the party or government as they have not abided by the edicts of the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, the Akal Takht.' Longowal was assassinated on August 20, 1985, inside a gurdwara of Sangrur's Sherpur village, a month after he signed the Punjab accord with then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in Delhi. Paying tributes to Longowal, Sukhbir said: 'Panthic ideals and principles are paramount for me and I would never compromise on the prestige of the 'panth' for power.' Sukhbir said he had made this clear to leaders like Prem Singh Chandumjra, Parminder Singh Dhindsa and Surjit Singh Rakhra. 'These leaders wanted to force me into compromises so that they could become MPs and ministers but I told them that resolving the issues of the 'quom' and Punjab were most important for me,' he said. Chandumajra, Dhindsa and Rakhra are now part of the breakaway faction of the SAD. 'I will take up all the pending issues of the 'panth' and Punjab before the people in the next one-and-a-half years. I appeal to you to support me in this endeavour to ensure a better future for our coming generations,' said Sukhbir. Referring to SAD's breakaway faction, Sukhbir said: 'A 'Nawan Chulha Dal' has been established in the state which is getting cooking gas free of cost from the Centre to divide Punjabis.' In his address, Giani Harpreet called upon the Sikh diaspora to stand against elements in the 'Panth' who have wilfully ignored the directive of the Akal Takht. Casting Sukhbir-led Akali Dal as violators of Akal Takht's edit on Akali unity, Giani Harpreet said: 'If their politics succeeds, no jathedar (head priest) will ever be able to pass directions against any Akali leader'. The former jathedar, who was unanimously elected as chief of the breakaway faction on August 11, said the SAD-BJP government came to power in 1997 with the promise of 'healing Punjab's wounds.' 'The balm has still not been applied,' he added. He also questioned why the SAD did not fight for the release of Sikh detenues when it was in power. 'We will fight for issues of Panth and Punjabis to revive the lost glory of Punjab.'

1984 anti-Sikh riots: SC to hear Sajjan Kumar's plea against punishment on Sept 24
The Supreme Court on Wednesday deferred to September 24 the hearing on the pleas filed by former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and the party's former councillor Balwan Khokhar against sentences awarded in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. In July, 2024, the apex court asked the CBI to respond to Khokhar's plea seeking the reprieve. Khokhar's life sentence was upheld by the Delhi High Court in 2018 whereas it reversed Kumar's acquittal by a trial court in 2013, in a case related to the killings of five Sikhs in the Raj Nagar Part-I area in Palam Colony in southwest Delhi on November 1-2, 1984, apart from the setting ablaze of a gurdwara in Raj Nagar Part-II. In his plea, Khokhar said the jail authorities had rejected his plea for furlough on September 26, 2024, saying his release would invite adverse repercussions and disturb peace and tranquillity in the society, prompting unrest. He said he had moved a bail plea and had already undergone a 8.7 years' sentence but the plea was dismissed by a court on February 3, 2023. Large-scale violence and killings of persons from the Sikh community took place in the national capital following former PM Indira Gandhi's assassination by her bodyguards in 1984 and the cases stemming from the incident have seen some major twists and turns 40 years on.

Guru Teg Bahadur's martyrdom anniv: Sikh bodies to take out procession from Chandni Chowk to Anandpur Sahib
Various Sikh bodies have planned to take out a grand religious procession named 'Guru Sees Marga Yatra' on the historic route from Chandni Chowk in Delhi to Anandpur Sahib to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur. Central Sri Guru Singh Sabha (Chandigarh), and Gyan Pragas Trust (Ludhiana) are also collaborators in this procession which will commence on October 3 from Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib, Delhi, and conclude on October 5 at Gurdwara Sis Ganj, Sri Anandpur Sahib.
