Strictly winner Ore Oduba opens up on self-discovery after tragic death of sibling
Sports broadcaster Ore Oduba has opened up about the heartbreaking death of his sibling, Lola, admitting that the loss of them changed his whole outlook on life. The BBC Sport host, who won Strictly Come Dancing in 2016 alongside Joanne Clifton, revealed how his family has had a "really difficult year".
Speaking on John Reynolds' Extraordinary Life Stories podcast, Ore, 39, spoke about his deeply personal and painful experience of losing his sister. He explained: "I wasn't prepared to lose my sister. She's been with me every day since.
"My sister's non-binary, they told us in their goodbye letter. They've been with me every day since. What my sister did in choosing to find peace in death that they couldn't find in life - that was strength, that was courage, and that was brave.
"And having gone through the last four or five years of their life and hearing about these troubles they were dealing with physically and emotionally. And actually, my sister did more living in the last five years of their life than in the previous 32 and still made a decision that they couldn't carry on in this world.
"What they did for all of us in those last weeks, that's given me the strength every day. And my responsibility now is to carry that legacy, because nothing is hard compared to what my sister went through."
Ore's sister, Lola, sadly died in April this year, a year after the presenter divorced from his wife of nine years, Portia Oduba. Ore said how his sister's death gave him a completely new outlook on life, adding: "We don't know when our last day is, and the truth is there isn't time, there isn't time. So I'm going to make the most of every single second I've got left.
"I can't say enough, when you've been through something that puts life into perspective, your whole outlook changes. None of this stuff matters, John, none of it matters. But you can wrestle what is really important back before it's too late."
Ore showed his support on social media for Lola earlier this month, revealing his sibling identified as non-binary, using they/them pronouns, towards the end of their life. He began: "Lots of people have been asking about the rainbow in my bio... some will say I don't need to explain myself (and they'd be right) however in this case I'm happy to share my why. It's maybe not why you think."
He continued: "I've mentioned before about the longer you can withstanding a storm the closer you are to your rainbow. I'm so glad to have grown monumentally through a truly difficult, stormy period in my life. the colours of my rainbow look very bright today.
"But in losing my sister in April the symbol of a rainbow has brought me closer to them in the times I've needed it desperately. My sister was very proudly black and very proudly queer.
"Definitely an ICON to me and so many of their friends and family. In the last year of their life they identified as non-binary. My pride for them knows no bounds.
"Despite doing a whole lot of living in their latter years, my sister spent much of their life in shame and humiliation of who they were. In so many ways, my sister's death gave ME a gift of life.
"Having realised I'd lived the majority of my life for the attention of others, often suppressing my authentic self, my sister gave me the wake up call to live my life fully and express myself wholeheartedly. And that is what I plan to do. It's certainly the version of me I want to mirror for my children."
Ore then addressed his sexuality, writing: "So am I gay, as someone keenly asked me on insta yesterday. No, not in the traditional or sexual sense.
"But if 'coming out' is about shedding a former self to put forward the new, truest version of me, without the shame, the hiding, without the second-guessing whether any decision will make me happy rather than how others perceive me, how I cheerlead others with kindness and compassion, with occasionally quiet, or loud, flamboyance, depending on the mood, and a big dollop of camp then HALLELUJAH - count me in!"

Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Wynne Evans appeared on a BBC show over the weekend despite his apparent departure from the corporation earlier this year Former Strictly Come Dancing star Wynne Evans made an unexpected appearance on a BBC show tonight. It comes after the corporation said it had "no plans" to work with him following his exit from the live tour and his radio show. Wynne, 53, however, appeared on an episode of Pointless Celebrities that aired on BBC One earlier tonight. He was paired up with Joanna Page, who was his co-star on Wynne & Joanna: All at Sea, which isn't set to have a second series as the BBC said in June that it has "no plans" to renew it. It comes following his apparent departure from the BBC earlier this year. It had been reported that it had severed ties with the opera singer, known for the Go Compare adverts, and had confirmed that it didn't plan to work with him further. The pre-recorded episode of Pointless Celebrities that aired tonight saw Wynne and Joanna make it to the penultimate round, but they missed out on reaching the final together. The other team, Jane Hill and Ben Boulos, who both work on BBC News, became the finalists instead after winning the round. They had competed against two other pairs earlier in the episode. RuPaul's Drag Race UK winner Danny Beard had been with impressionist Jess Robinson, whilst comedians Esther Manito and Rich Hall had worked together. Prior to the episode airing tonight, Wynne had told fans on Instagram that he would be in it. He wrote beside a photo of himself and Joanna on the set: "Tonight back on [BBC One] for Celebrity Pointless with [Joanna]." Some viewers seemed surprised to see Wynne on the show this evening. One wrote on X: "Wynne Evans? This must have been recorded 10 years ago?" Another said: "Seriously??? Who the hell thought Wynne Evans appearing would be a good idea." A third wrote on the platform though: "Well done [BBC] - Wynne on Pointless - common sense at last." It's not been confirmed when the episode was filmed. One viewer suggested it could mark Wynne's final appearance on the BBC though. They wrote in a post on X earlier tonight: "This could be Wynne Evans's last BBC appearance." The episode's broadcast this weekend comes after the BBC was said to have cut its last remaining ties with Wynne. He had worked with the corporation for years, including hosting his own BBC Radio show for almost a decade. it was announced back in May that the BBC had "no plans" to work with him in the future though. It comes following a series of scandals during his time on Strictly Come Dancing last year and its subsequent tour earlier this year. During the tour, it was reported that he had used the term 'spit roast' to host Janette Manrara at a photocall. Wynne has, however, since insisted that it was instead part of a nickname for fellow contestant Jamie Borthwick and that it "wasn't meant sexually". Wynne subsequently left the tour and his BBC Radio Wales show after the scandal broke back in January. It was said at the time that the decision had been made in agreement with the BBC and to "prioritise" Wynne's wellbeing. It was then announced in May that Wynne would not be returning to his radio show, which he had hosted since 2016. In a statement at the time, a spokesperson for the BBC said: "[Wynne] is not under contract with the BBC. He is not returning to the mid-morning show on BBC Radio Wales, and there are currently no plans to work with him." Whilst Wynne, who has since criticised the BBC, told fans in a statement: "It breaks my heart to say the BBC has decided not to renew my contract, so I won't be returning to my radio show. I'm gutted. That show wasn't just work - it was home. It was us. We laughed, we cried, we sang like nobody was listening. And somehow, through the airwaves, we became a family. Thank you for welcoming me into your homes. Into your hearts." He instead announced that he would host the Wynne Evans Show on other platforms. He's since launched his new weekday radio and later told his followers on social media that he had more than 40,000 listeners for the first episode. More recently, it was reported in June that the BBC had cut its last remaining ties with him. It was confirmed at the time that the corporation had "no plans" for a second series of his travel show Wynne & Joanna: All at Sea, which ran for six episodes between January and February. The corporation had already launched an inquiry into its flagship Saturday night family show amid claims two of its stars had used cocaine. It is understood that detectives from the Met Police are examining other allegations relating to the telly ballroom hit, which has been rocked by a string of controversies. Our latest shock revelation comes as the BBC prepares to launch Strictly's 23rd series next month - after officially announcing the line-up of celebrities including reality TV star Dani Dyer. A source told The Sun on Sunday: 'It's a significant new development in the BBC's recent string of crises that they have now got the police involved in investigating allegations surrounding Strictly. "This is a very dramatic turn of events. 'Despite all the show and its team have been through over recent months, it's hugely controversial that you've now got Scotland Yard detectives probing Strictly. 'This is their biggest prime-time family entertainment show, so it's not a good look for the BBC.' Strictly has been the subject of inquiries into bullying and inappropriate behaviour over the past 14 months. Last night Scotland Yard said: 'On Monday 4 August, the Metropolitan Police received a third-party allegation. "The police investigation is in its early stages. No arrests have been made at this time.' We approached the BBC for comment.
