Pahia is the main visitor base for the Bay of Islands, but I prefer to stay in Russell. It's not as accessible but charm and character put it streets ahead. Originally known as Kororareka, early in the 19th century this was a haven for sealers and whalers near one of the richest whaling grounds in the world. Today's Russell is a delightful little town of timber houses and big trees swooning low over the seafront, framing the yachts and the game fishing boats in the harbour. Its atmosphere is best absorbed in a stroll along The Strand, which runs by the waterfront. Just a short drive inland, the town of Kerikeri is known as the Cradle of the Nation. Among Kerikeri's historic treasures are the Kerikeri Mission House and the Stone Store.
Drive south to Auckland and stay for three nights to explore the city including the ferry ride to the pretty harbourside village of Devonport. Another ferry takes you to Waiheke Island where you can either hire a car or join a tour to explore the island's wineries and dining scene. Continue south to Rotorua to experience the spurting, steaming sensations of New Zealand's thermal wonderland, as well as its lovely lake and forest scenery.
Next stop is Lake Taupo for a fishing trip on the lake and if you still have time, drive further south to Tongariro National Park where there are amazing walks and dramatic volcanic landscape. From Tongariro, Wellington is a four-hour drive. Your itinerary would benefit from another four days. If you aren't already locked into a 10-day trip, you might consider extending and devoting more time to Rotorua, Lake Taupo/Tongariro and Wellington.

My daughter and her uni student friends, all in their 20s, wish to travel to Colombia. As they will be travelling on budget, what is a safe itinerary that includes points of interest and what tours are available?
T. Stuart, Coogee, NSW A tour, rather than a DIY itinerary, is the perfect solution for these young people in Colombia. They will travel safely at a fixed cost, mix with other travellers and get to find their feet in what can be a challenging country. G Adventures has several tours of the country, ranging from eight to 17 days. Melbourne-based adventure operator Intrepid also has a variety of tours. They'll probably find some areas in which they want to spend more time and the coastal city of Cartagena is likely to be top of their list.

Park Hyatt Melbourne sold to Thai group KS Hotels in $205m+ deal

A Thai hospitality group has been confirmed as the new owner of Melbourne's luxurious Park Hyatt hotel after a more than $205m purchase locked in two months ago. KS Hotels, just the third Thai-based group to snap up a major Victorian hotel, have bought the landmark set between the state's parliament, treasury and the Fitzroy Gardens, from Hong Kong's Fu Wah International. With a 245-room floorplan it's Melbourne's biggest hotel sale since 2017, when a run of accommodation centres including the W Hotel, the Novotel on Collins St and the Hilton at South Wharf were all sold to South-East Asian buyers. Catholic Church selling Melbourne terraces opposite St Patrick's Many of the city's most prominent hotels are owned by groups operating from across Asia, including the Westin, owned by a Malaysian company, and the Windsor, owned by Indonesia's Halim Group. Parties involved in the sale were unable to confirm a price, however industry sources have put it above the $205m paid for Sydney's Intercontinental Double Bay in 2024. JLL's head of investment sales for Australasia Peter Harper was among the agents who helped broker the deal and said it reflected Melbourne's 'incredible ability to absorb new stock coming through'. 'I don't know how anyone can see anything other than the market has done exceptionally well,' Mr Harper said. He noted that there had been more than 100 inquires and 10 groups that made offers for the hotel from when it was first quietly being offered to the market late last year, to after its launch on the open market in January. His colleague Nick Macfie said the Park Hyatt was among Melbourne's most impressive hotel offerings, and while a handful of local hotels like the Grand Hyatt with vast numbers of rooms available could 'pip it', it was unclear when a pricier offering might next hit the market. 'I would think Melbourne, this will be the biggest deal for a hotel for some time,' Mr Macfie said. 'And potentially in Australia it will be the biggest for a while.'

Nexus Airlines moves to suspend Kimberley flight route from September 2025

In another blow to air services in the Kimberley, Nexus Airlines has moved to shut down its flights between Broome, Kununurra and Darwin by the end of August. The final flight from Broome to Darwin via Kununurra will depart on the morning of September 1, with Nexus Airlines to give out full refunds to all passengers booked to travel after that flight. Nexus Airlines managing director Michael McConachy cited increased competition from Airnorth, a Northern Territory‑based regional carrier owned by Bristow Helicopters Australia and a subsidiary of the US‑based Bristow Group, for the closure of the route. 'The additional capacity they introduced, and aggressive pricing have made it financially unsustainable to continue on this route and, despite Nexus taking a significant share of the market, ultimately they have deeper pockets and were prepared to continue to fly with unused capacity,' he said. 'It's a difficult business decision, especially as someone who is deeply passionate about tourism and regional growth in the Kimberley, but I remain hopeful we'll return to this route in the near future.' Mr McConachy said it was a 'disappointing' decision to make. 'I'm proud of what we've achieved. Nexus Airlines was created to improve air connectivity across regional WA,' he said. 'Having now lived in the Kimberley for nearly two decades, I witnessed firsthand how poor reliability and high fares contributed to market failure on this route, which was a key motivation in bringing Nexus Airlines to the Kimberley.' Other Nexus routes including between Perth and Geraldton, and between Geraldton, Karratha, Port Hedland and Broome continue to perform well and will remain unaffected by this network change, according to Nexus. Mr McConachy backed recent calls from the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley for the State Government to regulate the sector in the region. 'Regulation through a competitive tender process, where one airline is granted exclusive access to a route, can be a vital tool in protecting essential air services,' he said. 'In regions where passenger volumes are too low to support multiple operators, this approach helps ensure communities continue to benefit from dependable, affordable air travel. It's about safeguarding access to tourism, education, health care and local business. 'My hope is that the Kimberley route will be fully regulated. This would allow fares, frequency and service levels to be set and monitored by the State Government, delivering the best outcome for the towns and regions along the route.' It comes after Qantas decided to shutter Jetstar Asia in June — taking Broome's short-lived Singapore flight connection with it, which was the first international flight route for Broome International Airport in years. With the route lasting less than a year before being axed, Broome International Airport chief executive Craig Shaw described the move as 'disappointing' and a blow to the region's aspirations of boosting international tourism and business at the time.

Queensland trainer David Vandyke eyes Victorian Group 1 mission for the first time since Alligator Blood

David Vandyke will head back to the scene of Alligator Blood's first Group 1 triumph when he attacks the Empire Rose Stakes with exciting mare Philia during the Victorian spring carnival. Philia was an excitement machine during the Queensland winter carnival, winning four on the bounce and starting favourite for the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) where she endured a tough run and was beaten 2.5 lengths. Group 2 winner Philia has now returned to Vandyke's Sunshine Coast stable and the astute trainer will aim her at races in her sweet spot of 1600m-2000m. Vandyke and connections had been weighing up a potential mission to Sydney for the riches of the $10m Golden Eagle, but the decision was made that she will head to Melbourne. Mindful that Philia had a busy winter, Vandyke will give her a light spring campaign with the plan to then unleash her in some big races during the 2026 autumn. However, he has revealed that the $1m Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes over 1600m at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup carnival is a key spring goal. Flemington was where Vandyke won the 2020 Group 1 Australian Guineas with Alligator Blood when he trained the now retired seven-time Group 1 winning superstar at the start of the galloper's magical career. Vandyke doesn't think he has had a Melbourne runner since the Alligator Blood adventure, but is looking forward to deploying frontrunning type Philia. 'I want to give her a fairly light spring, she was up a long time going into the winter carnival,' Vandyke said. 'We just hop on a plane at Brisbane Airport and she is there pretty quickly. 'Potentially, she will have one run and then into the Empire Rose. 'Sydney was certainly a consideration, but we ended up making the call to go to Melbourne.' Kerrin McEvoy developed a strong association with Philia during the winter carnival and was impressed at every step of her winter journey. Vandyke says Philia, now four, is back in his stable and had bulked up after a six-week break. 'She will have a couple of runs in spring and then we will look at giving her a good, strong autumn campaign,' he said. 'She has had a good six weeks off and she has come back a lot stronger. 'I will look at targeting races from a mile to 2000m for her. 'I don't think less than a mile is suitable for her and I don't know about more than 2000(m) at this point.' In early betting markets on TAB fixed odds, Fangirl is the $4.50 favourite for the Empire Rose Stakes and Philia is rated a $26 chance.
