More than 100,000 social media posts removed by MCMC, majority linked to gambling, scams, says Teo
KULAI: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken down more than 100,000 social media posts that have been deemed harmful, says Teo Nie Ching.
The Deputy Communications Minister said a total of 107,687 pieces of content have been removed by platform providers on the request of MCMC as of April 14 this year.
'From the amount, 57,669 were related to gambling while 30,427 were linked to scams.
'I take this opportunity to remind social media users not to fall for content that promotes 'too good to be true' or 'get rich quick' schemes,' she said after presenting incentives to Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia high achievers here on Saturday (May 31).
Separately, Teo also urged concert organisers to apply for a new initiative by her ministry called the Concert and Event in Malaysia (CEMI), which has an annual allocation of RM10mil.
She said concerts with international artists could enjoy a 30% rebate on its actual Qualifying Malaysian Concert and Event Spend (QMCES) expenditure or a maximum of RM1.5mil.
'To qualify for this, the organiser must meet conditions such as having a minimum capacity of 15,000 attendees and hire 30% Malaysian manpower for the event.
'For events with local artists, organisers could enjoy 30% rebate of its actual QMCES or RM1mil if they meet the conditions for the incentive,' she said, adding that the conditions and application could be done online.
Teo added that CEMI, managed by MyCreative Ventures with the support of the ministry, was to support the organisation of large-scale concerts and events in Malaysia.
She said the incentive is open for application starting May 15 until July 10 for events taking place this year or next year.

The census – the first in more than two decades – aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the country's agricultural and food production landscape. Arthur said among the key initiatives was organising programmes such as Fama Fest to create wider market access for young agropreneurs. He said these events not only helped promote and sell agricultural products but also highlighted the sector's potential for generating lucrative income. 'We want to show that the agriculture and agri-food industry is a viable and profitable career path. 'The ministry is also advocating for a shift away from conventional farming methods to modern, technology-driven agriculture,' said Arthur. 'This includes the use of innovation in every aspect of the industry, from production to operations, and creating a broader ecosystem of employment opportunities,' he added. Arthur said the ministry was also actively promoting agricultural Technical and Vocational Education and Training programmes. 'These courses, which cover areas such as livestock, fisheries and vegetable farming, are fully funded by the government, including accommodation and daily expenses, to make them more accessible to youth. 'There is also a need for cooperation from state governments. It is important that land and financing are made available to ensure young people have the resources to grow and expand their agricultural ventures.' Arthur said the ministry hoped that these combined efforts would revitalise the sector, ensuring food security and sustainability for the future.

PHEB awards RM70,200 to Indian SPM top scorers in Penang
GEORGE TOWN: A total of 167 high-achieving Indian students in Penang who excelled in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination received contributions amounting to RM70,200 from the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB). Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the students, who scored 7As and above across 37 schools, reflect the state government's continued commitment to educational development. 'I believe every young person in Penang has great potential to succeed, provided they remain committed and seize the opportunities for guidance and support available to them. 'The state government continues to prioritise human capital development as outlined in the Penang2030 Vision, with a key focus on enhancing access to quality education for all,' he said during the PHEB Education Carnival for SPM and STPM leavers and the 2024 SPM top scorer appreciation ceremony today. Also present were PHEB chairman RSN Rayer and his deputy, A Lingeshwaran. Meanwhile, Lingeshwaran said this marks the second consecutive year the board has recognised outstanding Indian students in Penang, with each of them receiving RM50 for every A obtained in the SPM examination. He added that between 2023 and May 2025, PHEB has channelled a total of RM883,607 towards educational aid for students pursuing certificate, diploma and degree programmes, as well as welfare assistance. 'Last year, PHEB received an allocation of RM1.5 million from the state government. This year, the amount has increased to RM2 million. 'We hope these funds will continue to benefit the Indian community in Penang, especially our youth pursuing education,' he said.

Digital Ministry requests MCMC report on connectivity issues, non-functioning towers in Sarawak
SIBU: The Digital Ministry has requested the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) prepare a report regarding the issues of connectivity blackspots and non-functional telecommunications towers, particularly in rural Sarawak. Its minister, Gobind Singh Deo said both these issues were discussed at the State Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council (MED4IRN) special committee meeting on May 28, and requested the MCMC to submit a related report within six months. 'I hope that in six months, we will receive a special report from the MCMC regarding these issues together with the Sarawak government, and (see) how we can collaborate to resolve this problem,' he said. Gobind told reporters this after attending the Longhouse Outreach Programme at Rumah Collins in Selangau near here today. The programme, organised by Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), an agency under the ministry, showcases practical field solutions aimed at helping communities leverage digital tools for economic and social enhancement. DNB, in a statement in conjunction with the implementation of the programme, said it involves the 'eKelas Usahawan' talk by Maxis Bhd; a financial literacy session by SME Bank; and a TikTok Shop boot camp, aimed at equipping rural entrepreneurs and youth with digital marketing and e-commerce skills. Meanwhile, the session by CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) also provided important education on online safety and digital responsibility.
