Congress unions seek benefits for MGNREGS workers

The Hindu9 hours ago
Employees' unions owing allegiance to the Congress organised a protest in front of the Secretariat on Wednesday accusing the Left Democratic Front government of pushing the welfare of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme workers to the back burner.
Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, who inaugurated the protest, demanded that the government increase the number of working days to a minimum of 200 per year and also bring the workers under the ambit of the social welfare and security net.
He demanded that the government institute ESI and EPF pensions for the workers, a majority of whom are women from the lowest economic strata in society. INTUC State president R. Chandrasekharan led the march. KPCC president Sunny Joseph, MLA P.C. Vishnunath, and INTUC district president V.R. Pratapan spoke.

SIR less about cleansing rolls, more about destroying democracy: Cong

The Congress on Thursday cited the Election Commission's own 2024 survey of all 243 assembly constituencies in Bihar to allege that the Special Intensive Revision is less about cleansing electoral rolls and more about "destroying democracy itself". Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared a media report on X which claimed that while the Election Commission has launched a special intensive revision (SIR) to clean up Bihar's electoral rolls, its own 2024 KAP (knowledge, attitude and practices) survey on voter insights noted the perceived "near-perfect accuracy of voter listings" in Bihar reflecting the "robustness of the electoral roll system". "The Election Commission's own 2024 KAP (Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices) survey of all 243 assembly constituencies in Bihar just after the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections stated that Rolls are already at 'near perfect accuracy'. Many eligible citizens are still unenrolled - thanks to paperwork & lack of awareness," Ramesh said on X. The ECI's focus should be inclusion, not exclusion, since many respondents cited complexities in securing their voter cards, Ramesh said on X. "Clearly the ECI did not believe that there was any compelling need to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls as recently as January 2025. What has changed since then?" he said. Was it perhaps the plea of a prime minister desperate to secure his post and safeguard his ramshackle NDA coalition through the promise of a rigged election in Bihar, Ramesh asked. "The SIR is less about cleansing electoral rolls, it is more about destroying democracy itself," he said. MLA Rahul Mamkootathil quits as IYC Kerala president amid misconduct probe

Congress MLA from Kerala, Rahul Mamkootathil, who faces an internal party inquiry over a misbehaviour allegation by an actress, on Thursday announced his resignation as state Youth Congress president. He announced this while speaking to reporters at his residence in Adoor near here. After actress Rini Ann George accused "a young leader" of a well-known political party of misbehaviour, BJP and CPI(M) affiliated youth organisation DYFI were protesting against Mamkootathil and demanding his resignation as MLA. His decision to resign from the party post came soon after Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly V D Satheesan asserted that nobody found guilty will be spared. The MLA began the press conference by saying that he had spoken to the opposition leader, as well as KPCC and AICC leaders, on Thursday morning. "They did not demand my resignation. The actress is my friend, and I don't believe the person she mentioned was me. She is my good friend and will remain so. I believe that I have not done anything against the law or the Constitution of the country until now," he said. He announced his resignation only at the end of the press conference. "At a time when the state government is facing severe protests and allegations, Congress leaders and party workers should not spend their time and energy on such matters. Hence, I have decided to resign from the post of Youth Congress president. I still believe that I have not committed any illegal act," he said. After announcing his resignation, Mamkootathil refused to speak further about the matter and went inside his house.

Oppn V-P nominee Justice Reddy files nomination, pledges to ‘discharge role with impartiality and dignity'

Opposition candidate for the vice-presidential election Justice (Retd) B Sudershan Reddy said Thursday that contesting the polls 'is not merely about one individual' and is rather 'about reaffirming the idea of India as envisaged by our founders, where Parliament functions with integrity, where dissent is respected'. Justice (Retd) Reddy made the remarks while filing his nomination papers as top leaders from INDIA bloc parties, including Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Lok Sabha LOP Rahul Gandhi, Rajya Sabha LOP Mallikarjun Kharge, MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, SP leader Ramgopal Yadav and Dharmednra Yadav, DMK's Tiruchi Siva, TMC's Satabdi Roy, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sanjay Raut, CPI(M)'s John Brittas among others were present. Sources said there were 20 proposers and 20 seconders in each set of forms filed by Justice (Retd) Reddy for his nomination. 'The V-P candidate has filed four sets, so 80 proposers and 80 seconders,' said the source. In a statement after filing his nomination, Reddy promised that if elected as the vice-president, he would 'discharge that role with impartiality, dignity, and a steadfast commitment to dialogue and decorum'. 'This election is not merely about one individual. It is about reaffirming the idea of India as envisaged by our founders — an India where Parliament functions with integrity, where dissent is respected, and where institutions serve the people with independence and fairness,' said Reddy. He said his life 'in public service as a judge of the Supreme Court of India, as a student of law, and as a citizen rooted in the democratic traditions of this Republic' has taught him that 'the true strength of India lies in the dignity of every individual, the protection of constitutional morality, and the unity in our diversity'. 'The Vice President, as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, carries the responsibility of safeguarding the highest traditions of parliamentary democracy,' Reddy said in the statement. He expressed gratitude to the leaders of the Opposition parties for reposing their trust in him, and to the 'countless citizens' who continue to inspire this collective struggle for justice, equality, and harmony. 'With faith in our Constitution and hope in our people, I embark on this journey. May our democratic spirit continue to guide us all,' said Reddy. Justice Reddy, who retired from the Supreme Court in 2011, most recently headed the independent expert working group set up by the Congress government in Telangana to analyse data of a caste survey conducted by it. As the head of the expert group, Justice Reddy had interactions with senior Congress leadership, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, and reportedly left a good impression on them. Justice Reddy is expected to be projected by the Opposition as a champion of social justice as opposed to CP Radhakrishnan, a veteran RSS leader. The vice-presidential elections will be held on September 9.
