Athlete of the week: Michael Stewart
Holliday's Michael Stewart pulls in our athlete of the week honor after a pair of stellar performances on the diamond.Stewart tossed a no-hitter in the Eagles 4-0 district victory last Tuesday, striking out 11 and going 3-for-3 at the plate. In Friday's district win, he knocked in three runs and also threw a runner out trying to steal second while playing catcher. As part of earning our honor, Holliday's Michael Stewart will be featured on the digital billboard on Lawrence Road in Wichita Falls throughout the week. He also becomes eligible to win a scholarship courtesy of United Regional Orthopedics at the 2025 Nexstar Sports Awards in July.

Smith, in his own right, has spoken out about how important players like Davis and Carter have been to his own production. It is clear that the former Bulldogs are all looking out for each other. That has helped the Eagles reach new heights on defense. And the entire group seems to be ready to achieve a new level as defending Super Bowl champions as well. Jordan Davis has been a very important part of the Philadelphia Eagles over the last few years as the former first-round defensive tackle has worked as a run-stuffer. Philadelphia needs him to be more of a pass rusher than ever before. Ever since he came out of Georgia, Davis has been known as more of a run-stopping defensive tackle. He never showed much pass rushing prowess with the Bulldogs or in his first four seasons with the Eagles. That is about to change. … or so the Eagles hope. Speaking to reporters during Eagles voluntary workouts, Davis detailed how he was preparing himself to be more than just a first- and second-down run defender. Advertisement 'I'm getting into great shape and working hard and understanding the nuances of pass rushing,' Davis said. 'Not even just (coach) Clint Hurtt, but (teammate) Nolan Smith has been teaching me things. "When it's just stuff like that, learning stuff from different players and coaches, they want you to be your best at pass rush. They want you. They expect that from you." Davis had his fifth-year option picked up by the Eagles this offseason. … in anticipation of getting more from him. In his first three seasons with the team, he managed to record just 3.5 sacks. Philadelphia will need a jump up from a former first-round pick from that kind of production. If he can build off of last year's improvements as a rusher, he may be in for his best year yet. Saquon Barkley's victory tour over the last few months has been something to behold for Philadelphia Eagle fans across the country. Advertisement Since winning Super Bowl LIX, and setting a new record for rushing yards in a single season including the playoffs, Barkley has gone on multiple talk shows, signed the richest contract in league history for his position, and has now teased a timeline for his retirement. Woof. Speaking on Chris Long's Green Light Podcast this week, Barkley talked about when he could eventually call it a career. "I'll probably [be] one of those guys that it would be out of nowhere," Barkley said. "I'll probably just wake up one day, whether it's next year or two years or four years and just be like, yeah, it's over. I don't think I will ever lose that passion. Advertisement "The competitive nature is always going to be there. I like, probably my favorite player of all time is Barry Sanders, so probably similar to that. Maybe one day, like it'll be out of nowhere, I'll probably be ballin', and just be like, yeah, call it quits." Barkley's comments shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. First, the fact he mentioned Sanders' name is extremely relevant. The Detroit Lions Hall-of-Famer retired at the age of 31. Barkley is current 28. The final three years of his current deal with Philadelphia will take him to 31. It makes a lot of sense. There's another part to this, though, that Barkley didn't mention. Sanders went out as a Pro Bowl and All-Pro player. He didn't have the amount of injuries that Barkley has gone through (Barkley has suffered a torn ACL and neck sprain). Advertisement Could Barkley, running behind Philadelphia's elite offensive line, choose to retire before more injuries begin to pile up? It is certainly plausible. Barkley won't be calling it a career this season, though. He's looking to help the Eagles repeat as Super Bowl champions. And so long as Philly's offensive line remains in tact, the team should be perfectly set for another title run with their star running back.
