(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Malaysia and Thailand are entering a new phase of stronger bilateral ties driven by the close relationship between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Thai prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, says a senior Thai official. Thai foreign minister Maris Sangiampongsa said the rapport between the two leaders reflected a growing partnership focused on cooperation across multiple sectors, especially in border regions, reported Bernama. 'The prime ministers have built a strong bond. This opens up opportunities, not just in trade and investment, but also in security,' he told Bernama during the 46th Asean Summit held here recently. He added that regular communication between both leaders had strengthened mutual understanding and paved the way for more strategic collaboration. Thailand remains a key economic partner for Malaysia. In 2024, it was Malaysia's seventh-largest trading partner globally and third-largest within Asean, with total trade reaching US$25.03 billion (RM114.56 billion). Trade between the two countries rose to US$3.96 billion (RM17.65 billion) from January to February this year, up from US$3.67 billion (RM16.80 billion) in the same period last year. Both governments are committed to developing the shared border into a vibrant economic corridor, focusing on trade, investment, and cross-border infrastructure to enhance connectivity. Efforts are also underway to integrate special border economic zones to further boost trade and investment in the border areas, which currently account for over 30% of total bilateral trade. Maris described joint border development as a model of mutually beneficial cooperation. He pointed to sectors with high potential – including the halal industry, palm oil, and rubber – as areas for further collaboration. 'While both governments can facilitate opportunities, success depends on strong private sector participation,' he said. 'There are solid policies in place that can support greater business collaboration and regional development.' Anwar and Paetongtarn have maintained regular contact through meetings and phone calls. They have met three times to date: in Putrajaya in December, Bangkok in April, and most recently at the Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur. They have also agreed to hold a joint Cabinet meeting later this year at the Sadao-Bukit Kayu Hitam border area. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ringgit eases against the greenback

At 6pm, the local note edged lower to 4.2435/2490 versus the US dollar. KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit eased against the greenback at the close yester day after the United States posted stronger economic data. At 6pm, the local note edged lower to 4.2435/2490 versus the US dollar from Tuesday's close of 4.2425/2485. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd's chief economist Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said stronger-than-expected US job openings in April lifted optimism about the American economy's resilience and helped lift the dollar. US job openings rose 191,000 to 7.391 million by the last day of April, beating a forecast of 7.10 million vacancies. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said traders were showing increasing interest in US assets, easing short-term pressure on the dollar. — Bernama

Manila's debt hits fresh high in April as govt borrowings rise

Since the beginning of the year, the country's debt has risen by 4.37% or 701.37 billion peso. — Philippine Daily Inquirer MANILA: The latest data from the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) show state liabilities inched up by 0.41% or 68.89 billion peso (US$1.2bil) on a month-on-month basis. Since the beginning of the year, the country's debt has risen by 4.37% or 701.37 billion peso. While the government had to incur more borrowings in April to plug its budget deficit, the BTr said a rallying peso helped minimise the growth of obligations. The local currency has been gaining ground in the past weeks as US President Donald Trump's erratic trade policies bruise confidence in the US dollar. 'The government continues to follow a disciplined debt strategy, ensuring that borrowings support productive investments while keeping fiscal sustainability,' the bureau said. Broken down, domestic obligations, which accounted for 69.2% of the total debt load, went up by 1.85% to 11.59 trillion peso in April. The BTr said the increase was driven by robust demand for government securities, including the 300 billion peso benchmark bonds that the state offered during the month. The local currency's appreciation also reduced the peso equivalent of US dollar-denominated domestic securities by 3.85 billion peso. Meanwhile, external borrowings declined by 2.68% to 5.16 trillion peso because of the 124.74 billion peso decrease in the peso-value of foreign debt. — Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

Anwar denies seeking immunity after losing bid to refer Yusoff Rawther's suit to apex court

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today said he wanted to ensure that high public office is protected from litigation that may be strategically timed, politically motivated, or institutionally disruptive. PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has rejected suggestions that he is seeking personal immunity from legal proceedings, after the High Court dismissed his application to refer eight legal questions arising from a civil suit filed by a former aide to the Federal Court. Anwar's remarks come amid public and political debate surrounding a civil suit filed by former research assistant Yusoff Rawther, in which questions have arisen about whether the prime minister is seeking legal immunity to avoid standing trial. 'This matter has never been about seeking personal immunity or escaping legal scrutiny,' said Anwar in a Facebook post. 'It concerns the integrity of our constitutional system and the need to ensure that high public office is protected from litigation that may be strategically timed, politically motivated, or institutionally disruptive. 'I remain fully committed to the rule of law, the independence of our courts, and the dignity of democratic governance.' Anwar said the legal process will continue as required, and that he will 'continue to discharge (his) responsibilities without distraction or compromise'. At a press conference after the High Court decision, his lawyer, K Rajasegaran, said Anwar's legal team will immediately file an appeal to the Court of Appeal. Rajasegaran said the eight questions submitted are neither abstract nor academic in nature, but pertain to serious and unresolved constitutional issues. Last Tuesday, Anwar filed an application asking the Kuala Lumpur High Court to refer eight questions of law to the Federal Court for determination, including whether he has immunity from the civil suit brought against him by Yusoff four years ago. He said he wanted the apex court to rule whether Articles 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution grant him qualified immunity from the suit. Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin then criticised Anwar, stating that Article 8(1) of the Federal Constitution guarantees equality under the law. Hamzah said no one, not even the prime minister, is above the law. The eight questions of law are linked to a civil suit filed by Yusoff over alleged incidents that took place before Anwar assumed office on Nov 24, 2022. Yusoff, a grandson of the late Penang consumer advocate SM Mohamed Idris, claims he was assaulted at Anwar's home in Segambut in October 2018. He is seeking general, special, aggravated and exemplary damages, as well as interest, costs and other relief deemed fit by the court. Anwar denies the claim and has filed a countersuit.
